Frank Miller To Direct Buck Rogers

Buck Rogers

Remember last May when a rumor began to circulate that Frank Miller would direct Buck Rogers, only to be denied days later? Well turns out it was true after all. Odd Lot Entertainment, the production company behind The Spirit, wants to reteam with Frank Miller to helm the sci-fi adventure flick. Odd Lot is in talks with Nu Image/Millennium for the rights to the property. THR reports that Miller’s take is expected to be “darker” and will likely include “Miller’s signature visual elements and themes, such as corruption and redemption.” No, duh.

I’m surprised that any production company is willing to put their trust in Miller at this point. The early buzz has only begun to leak and the consensus is that Miller’s directorial debut The Spirit is beyond disastrous. Early tracking numbers for the film are spread all over the map. It seems like it would be smarter to do this deal after The Spirit’s Box Office debut.

Nu Image/Millennium Films originally planned to develop a $40 million film with genre veteran Flint Dille, who penned a Buck Rogers graphic novel in the 1990s, attached to write and produce. The plan was to turn “the cheapness of the low-budget effects will be a running joke in the movie, which will retain the campiness of the 1980s TV series Buck Rogers in the 25th Century starring Gil Gerard.” My hope is that Miller’s approach doesn’t result in a slapstick tone, which judging by The Spirit, I have reason to worry.

For those of you who were born post-Back to the Future (I find a lot of generational entertainment is lost in people born of the internet generation), Buck Rogers was created in 1928 by Philip Nowlan. The basic premise is as follows: Rogers, a pilot/astronaut who falls into a coma, only to awaken in the twenty-fifth century. Best known from the long-running syndicated newspaper comic strip, Rogers also appeared in a 12-part 1939 movie serial, a 1979 television series, and in many other incarnations. The development of space technology in the twentieth century launched Buck Rogers into American pop culture.

Discuss: Do you want to see Frank Miller remake Buck Rogers?

  • Dr. Doc
hell yeah i wanna see Miller take on Buck Rogers

Miller doing sci fi would be bad ass

im worried about The Spirit, like everyone else probably is

but until i see it, i still believe in Miller
  • Weyland_Yutani
    great property. sad direction.

I'm starting to believe that a lot of people don't really understand the things that make retro-future attractive. I think Kerry Conran had a pretty good go of it with Sky Captain and, if that is the direction they want to go, they should tap that experience, although I'd prefer that they actually tackle the visual style without all of the green screen.

The first director that embraces the visual style and knows how to tell a pulp story without camping it up will succeed. I'm just thinking about what is being done with Star Trek. If they give the Buck Rogers characters that kind of love, but retain the art direction that retro futurism requires, it could be something great.

Assuming he's still on the project, I'm trusting Andrew Stanton to get John Carter right.
  • well said, man.
  • TheMarquis
    Dear Mr. Miller.

    No.

    -Mgmt.

However, i'd LOVE to see a Duck Dodgers movie.
  • Hendo
Eric Cartman also portrayed Buck Rogers in an episode of South Park as well lol
  • OMG give this guy a medal for even getting that joke. I mean really that EP is going to be better then this movie.
  • /filmluvs
i guess it's a good thing Seth Rogen got Green Hornet before Miller did. this is gonna suck.
  • This could really work.
  • when will hollywood learn that frank miller isn't a director? oh, maybe when the spirit bombs!
  • Sheriff Dewey
F*CK NO!!! Frank Miller has NO talent as a Director and should stick to writing. And as for Buck Rogers going darker? C'mon m*therf*cker. Really? This thing has sci-fi comedy written all over it. BR should be directed by Ben Stiller, starring Ashton Kutcher as Buck, Megan Fox or Odette Yustman as the hot chick, and for the voice of Twiggy...Charles Barkley! Turibll, jus turibull. Bede bede.
  • Do not want a campy tone. I want a big budget space opera.
  • Dr. Doc
i cant wait for this AND the new comic series from Dynamite Entertainment to be released in 2009!
  • Chris
Would prefer a remake of Flash Gordon.
  • odd
why make this into a movie, who cares about a buck rodgers movie, old people who dont spend money on shit like this? any 20-30 year old will not give a damn about this movie, look at lost in space, that was a movie that sucked ass because it was not only bad but the audience for it was not there. they need to realize that tv shows from the 60's and 70's dont need to be made into movies, the demographic they are trying to attract 18-34, really could care less about this crap. now take a look at transformers, i thought it was a sucky movie, but since i grew up in the 80's i went to the theater to see it. they need to look at what demographic they are trying to sell this to and realize that its not the 18-34 they are targeting. as far as frank miller, the guy sucks, the spirit looks like shit, i hope he never touches another property again.
  • I don't know about this one. I mean, Miller wrote some of the best comics in the medium's history...sucks to see him take a property like "The Spirit" and apparently blow it. Buck Rogers isn't important enough to me to care too much whether or not it gets ruined. But, for the fans of the story, I hope he doesn't muck it up.
  • I don't know...Miller's style and vibe may be a little too dark for the Buck Rogers thing. Not really an appropriate director. Maybe the guy who directed the Pirates of the Carribean movies?
  • God damit why.
  • How 'dark' can a guy named Buck Rogers really be?...I see a fail in the distance....
  • After what he did with The Spirit. I don't want him touching any film unless it involves him being behind an actual director and screenwriter.
  • I don't really want to see Frank Miller involved with other properties. However, wouldn't it be a strange world if Frank Miller actually knocks Buck Rogers out of the park. I know we all expect his films to be just a knock-off Sin City, as seen with The Spirit, but what if he actually demonstrated some growth. I doubt we'll ever see that though. I doubt any of us would ever care by the time he does do that. In the end, Frank Miller just needs to create good genre comics and leave the film making to others. I hope they don't announce Miller as the new director of a Daredevil reboot. While I know a lot of people could care less about Matt Murdoc, there's still a few people left out there who'd want to see a good film about that character.
  • Nice try but I'll put my chips against this flick any day. Even the trailer for The Spirit reaks of ass-batter on screen.
  • Oh, in no way am I endorsing the Spirit or Buck Rogers. I was just saying how strange it might be if Frank Miller surprised everyone and demonstrated the talent he's shown once before (as seen in Batman: Year One or The Dark Knight Returns; his comics). I don't feel that he'll ever do that, I've stated he needs to focus on what he knows how to do. Film making is NOT for Frank Miller.
  • I agree, film is not Frank Miller's profession unless he's working WITH Robert Rodriguez on a Sin City sequel.
  • max
OK. Frank Miller is gonna be the "Brunno Mattei of 21st century"
  • Can it NOT look like Sin City, please?
  • You obviously missed the part that said the movie "is expected to ... include Miller’s signature visual elements". In other words, it'll be Sin City 3 (cuz let's face it, The Spirit is really Sin City 2)
  • I didn't miss it, I just chose to ignore it... and hope. Heh.
  • Very well, then, carry on, LOL
  • Tap Zepol
Frank Miller has become a hack pretty much since Dark Knight Strikes Again. His comic writing stinks (All Star Batman and Robin, where Batman is Dirty Harry, threw his "no-killing" rule out the window, and has to say "G*dd@mn" in between as many words as possible). His next project is supposedly called "Holy Terror, Batman!" where Batman takes on Al-Queda... yeah, chew on that for a bit. The Spirit has been looking progressively awful. The guy does whatever he wants with no regard to the characters. Sin City was his best work, but then again...Sin City was his OWN creation, so there was nothing to destroy. Frank Miller's star has faded, no one (important) has seen it yet.
  • gah
Tap is right. Alot of non comic fans are unaware that Frank Miller hasn't been Frank Miller in a really long time. Frank seemed to have lost his mind after 9/11 and he never really resurfaced again. I really don't know if it's because he's becoming senile or he just lost his mind.
  • Frank Miller is now writing about Al Qaida in his comics? What a loser.
  • He's still working on that Al Qaeda story?!? Geez, I've been hearing about that for years... is it even timely anymore?
  • I guess it's true what Kevin Smith said... in Hollywood, people fail upwards...
  • very much.
  • TheMarquis
    Hear hear.
  • Nice
  • Dr. Doc
i cant wait to see this

and for those of you who arent too excited about this news, cheer up

a new comic series featuring Buck Rogers is being released by Dynamite entertainment in 2009, featuring covers and character designs by John Cassaday and its being written by Scott Beatty (he has done some great work for DC involving the Bat-Family!)

so cheer up guys, the future is extremely bright for Buck Rogers fans!
  • edog
    No.
  • Berlin Calling
Count me out of this reboot. I agree w/ Tap and Gah 100%. And enough with the "darker" tones. I want something uplifting in my sci-fi now, like Star Trek or the middle Star Wars trilogy.
  • So he's going to make it darker, but have running jokes. Ok that's enough I call bullshit. The only movie to ever get close to this was Evil Dead, and it was more humor then darkness.

On a lighter note, it's only Buck Rodgers.
  • Just from the reviews for The Spirit the other day, i don't think Frank Should be directing anything anytime soon.
  • Frank Miller needs to stick to graphic novels. Let's look at his resume: Robocop 2 screenplay, Robocop 3 screenplay, Sin City (co-director, creator), The Spirit (Director). WTF?
  • Robocop 2 story was alright, not the best ever, but it was ok. Sin City was fantastic but I think that's because he was teaming up with Rodriguez. I agree he does need to stick to what he's great at.
  • yeah, robocop 2 was just ok. but 3 was shit. the first one will always be a classic.
  • Belin Calling
@ Weyland_Yutani, it takes intelligence and aesthetic sense to appreciate a retro-futuristic take, something that the mass American audience is sorely lacking, esp. in the sci-fi arena. Just watch the 20-something morons recoil in horror at something like Star Trek being done in its original '60s style, only updated. The only reason the Star Wars prequel trilogy with its Restoration/steampunk inspired designs worked was because it's Star Wars. With everything before the '90s treated as a joke in Hollywood (see Green Hornet) and Frank's filmmaking skills still in doubt, I don't hold out hope for Buck Rogers.
  • Craig M.
"Miller’s take is expected to be “darker” and will likely include “Miller’s signature visual elements and themes, such as corruption and redemption.”

So it will be Sin City...IN SPACE! (Say it out loud like the guy on the Muppet Show introducing Pigs In Space).
  • Mr B
Buck Rogers is officially being retitled "Whores in Space, with appearance by Man with red shoes" by Frank Miller.
  • 790
Frank Miller vs Buck Rogers, = geekgasim. !
  • Bronzethumb
Didn't they *already* make a darker and gritter remake? Or am I reading too much into "Farscape"?
