I’m usually pretty professional in my business replies but when Fox Searchlight asked me if I would like to host an exclusive video clip of the director of my favorite movie of the year interviewing the director of my second favorite movie of the year, I replied “Oh Hell yes”.

Below is part 3 of 7 of The Wrestler director Darren Aronofsky and director Danny Boyle’s sit down interview with each other. In this clip, Boyle talks about the technology of Slumdog Millionaire. We’ll post the other videos when they become available

/Film reader Ari P sent over the following photos of Boyle using the Silicon Imaging SI-2K Mini on the set of Slumdog Millionaire.

Slumdog Millionaire is now playing. The Wrestler is in NY/LA, and will be expanding to a city near you in the coming weeks. (Check the release schedule here)

  • I knew it was something Aronofsky!
  • Great score Peter!
  • jason B
    @ peter!!!!!

did you get a chance to hear aronofsky's phone call in to the stern show this morning?! i won't ruin anything, but if you haven't listened yet, you've got to. he clears up the artie/wrestler casting 'mystery', and he is very open with the questions they throw at him.

as usual, robin is a moron & made some ignorant comments about 'the fountain', but other than that, it was great!

oh, also thanks for posting this DA/DB interview - gonna watch it right now!
  • Oh yeah, def going to check both of these out this winter beak.. Thanks for the posting a link to the schedule too (eventhough I live in LA)
  • great stuff, pete. can't wait for the other parts!

this kind of interview never happens. 2 directors together talking about tech! this is awesome.
  • Sweet! I could listen to Danny Boyle talk all day, he is so ridiculously engaging.
  • This is a great idea.
  • You just gave me a slight geekgasm with that video.

it's the part where they talking about directing style :)
  • lukebyte
    That was pretty awesome.
  • It's funny - Slumdog is winning a ton of 'best cinematography' awards via the use of a tiny digital camera while Wally Pfister's massive IMAX intergration is the underdog.

I liked Slumdog Millionaire, don't get me wrong, but the look of the movie was not one of the strong points.
  • Danny
Funny, I thought it was the only strong point...
  • I'd fuckin faint if I met Danny Boyle in person. I really love his movies.
  • Fun fact, I actually did meet him at the end of a screening of Slumdog. Hopefully that should provide enough vicarious excitement to make you a little drowsy.
  • he spoke at my university, was really cool
  • and this is why I come to /film
  • trainspotter
really nice to see these two guys sat down together sharing their enthusiasm, great post. They both seem to be in a similar position having come off pretty intense effects laden films (the Fountain and Sunshine) and have recaptured their mojo on small scale projects. Cant wait to see both Slumdog and the Wrestler.
  • TheMarquis
Oh, Slashfilm-- how i love you and your scoops. I could watch these two talk for hours. Speaking of such--- Peter, do you know where/when we can get the other 6 parts?
  • awesome
  • deano
How is this a scoop? I assume Foxsearchlight just handed him the video to help pimp their product. If anything it's a pain in the arse that these guys have to come up with stupid gimmicks and split the interview up and hand it out to tons of different sites.

It looks like a great interview.. Just wish we could watch the whole thing without all the pissing about.
  • Glenn
These guys have been responsible for some of my all time favorite movies. Sunshine for one was astounding and its a shame it didn't get the marketing and attention it deserved. Great work /slash film. This is a must watch for anyone who can appreciate great directors. Its strange that my friends can recognize the movies they made but have no interest in the people behind them.
  • Silicon Imaging 2K sounds an incredibly interesting, hand-held cameras (well hand-held for while after that "they get tired") with high resolution filming, I like, and Danny Boyle seems to like it too.

http://www.siliconimaging.com/DigitalCinema/SI_2K...- Link to Silicon Imagings website. I assume Danny is talking about the SI-2K Mini.
  • This is exactly how I imagined actual directors talked with eachother.
  • Can't believe Darren didn't know about the SI 2K. Maybe he was just saying that for the audience, but one would think that he would be up on these sort of things...
It's really cool that Boyle likes digital so much. Incredible that he made such an amazing film with that sort of camera. Brilliant work.

Where are the rest of the Interviews? I can only find part 3 and 4 on youtube..
  • Spooky
Quick notes while watching: Aronofsky is a bad conversionalist - Feels like QVC - Why Germans don't use that cameras in their own films ...
  • hawk
    love this kind of stuff!
  • It is very rare that I geek out, but this is quite epic for me. Two of the most amazing film makers of this day and age chatting about one of their movies. The only way it could be better would be if Bill Murray served them coffee.
  • It's really amazing watching these two excellent directors chat about film together, but the part of the chat going into the technicalities of the SI-2k and the RED really contained a lot of horseshit that quite simply is not true. Otherwise excellent video, would love to see the rest.
  • (And for anyone interested, no the SI-2k does not have the resolution of the RED, no it's not just a head attached to a hard drive, it's a much bigger camera than the RED, with an option to take the sensor and lens off the body to make a smaller unit that still needs to be connected to the main body like he mentioned (of course a very very useful feature), and no 2k resolution is not widely recognized as the digital equivalent of 35mm film resolution. Also it is most definitely not cheap enough to just be left about, and adding the lenses they used on it, you most certainly would not. But otherwise, excellent video, would like more of these.)
  • He looks like the guy who played Batman in the recent Batman movie. Not the guy who played Batman in "Batman & Robin." The newest Batman, no?
