The first movie reviews of Frank Miller’s adaptation of Will Eisner’s The Spirit have begun to hit the interwebs, and it doesn’t look good.

Variety: “Frank Miller’s solo writing-directing debut plunges into a watery grave early on and spends roughly the next 100 minutes gasping for air. Pushing well past the point of self-parody” … “There’s a lot going on here, but none of it sticks — not the shopworn plotting nor the arch, stilted dialogue. The actors often seem to be delivering their lines in ironic quote marks, suggesting a straight-faced sendup of noir and comicbook conventions that, whatever the intended effect, falls mostly flat.”

AICN: “I’ve seen something that has taken the top prize from “Battlefield Earth.” … “Okay, Mr. Miller. Let’s get it on.” … “Seriously, it’s not. You clearly don’t have any idea what you’re doing. Someone, ANYONE, over at Lionsgate should have known this. Fuck, it’s their JOB to know this. But they didn’t.” … “Folks, this movie is that bad. I heartily recommend it if you have a strong stomach and an even stronger sense of Bad-Movie-Love. Otherwise, steer clear.”

Unique Geek: “The Spirit starts off crazy when we expect serious, then tries to pull it back in, then goes for weird juvenile sight gags then tries to be tough, and we’re disoriented.  Theres also a pathlogical fascination with a prop photocopy of Mendes’ rump.  If you took a shot every time the camera cuts to it, you would be wasted by the third act, and maybe “wasted” is the right word to end with here.  There’s a lot of work and opportunity that went by the wayside here, a lot of talented people and some great source material that never quite gels.  The parts that look good, look good, but maybe next time, they’ll hire a fox to put it all together.”

Newsarama: “The Spirit does a precarious balancing act juxtaposing great moments and terrible ones, leaving audiences likely be split over which makes the greater impression.” … “The mosh of comedic banter and noir-ish drama worked well for the most part, but ultimately, those aforementioned moments of potential that flash and peek out now and again are too far and few between to save The Spirit from being a disappointment..”

its the worst movie ever made, I could barely stand the first ten minutes!!!!

What I enjoy about this flop is that it will actually be Frank Miller's SECOND huge failure in H-wood. In the late 80s he destroyed the promising ROBOCOP franchise with his moronic ROBOCOP II & III. Then after his then-wife returned home to their Hollywood Hills house one day and found him weeping on the phone with his producers they skulked out of H-Wood and moved to Virginia. I thought SIN CITY was a bad joke--believe me, I know Frank, and none of that awful awful dialogue was ironic-- but I thought perhaps in the 20 years since ROBOCOP folks had gotten stupid enough to be fooled by his reactionary fascistic crap (I mean Bush was elected TWICE). But, glory be, we ain't that moronic yet! I mean, I knew the guy for years, and he has the mind of snivelly pre-pubescent (even 20 year ago before the booze really rotted his brain cells--and the little soul he had). Oh, boy, now his Batman is gonna capture Bin Laden! The fool is completely pickled in booze. Bye-bye again, Frank you pitiful frightened tool... There's always Virginia...
  • Dr. Doc
how is he copying Sin City's visual style? it was based off of HIS comic work! its HIS style!
  • Bull
Great - the movie still sucks. Try something new.

Are we forgetting that Scarlett, Eva Mendes, and Sarah Paulson are in this??? What isn't appealing about an action movie with those honeys in hit? You guys need to get off your high horse, not all movies are the Dark Knight, some just aren't as good.

Remember Mars Attacks? That was a bad movie. The Spirit will be exactly what it was intended to be--entertaining.

a moment of silence re; the directing career of frank miller.
  • Kokushi
No way in hell this movie is worst than The Happening, lol.
  • I'm still trying to erase that from my mind...The Happening was such a disappointment...The Spirt looks corny as hell too...
  • well at least people is realizing that Frank Miller sucks, never liked Sin City or 300 and can't believe e1 like those movies.
  • Mark
Sin City was great, and 300 was at least ok. But not because of Frank Miller, but because he had nothing to do with them (aside from creating the source material).
He can write comics, but he never worked in the film business before this and he will probably never direct a movie again. He got a co-director credit for Sin City, but that's just out of politeness. It's obvious the work of Robert Rodriguez.
  • Yeah we'll be able to tell if he had that much direction with the Sin City film when his directorial debut comes out in a week. I really wish he would have tried to do something a little better but, from the looks of it, he's not going to find too many director's chairs in the future.
  • Really... I mean, what were you expecting? You need better judgement. AS this film looked terrible from the start....
  • prophecy_projectz
I wonder if this movie is THAT BAD or just not very good but people are piling on it cause it's Frank Miller adapting a Will Eisner project.
  • poor_spirit
lol i knew it this film will get bad reviews i been tellin people LionGate is not good for comicbook films i.e. The Punisher: WarZone and now the The Spirit LionGate is only good for blood and gore
  • Brian Rodden
Yeah this movie looks bad. Who doesn't think this a bad rip off of Sin City (or at least a paradody of it)? Nice mask Kato...
  • all aboard the fail boat
  • HA! Netflix it is!
  • LOL... nice one :D
  • I was never interested in this. I'm not surprised and quietly comforted that it is going to tank.
  • Well that sucks, I was hoping this movie was going to be alright. I especially wanted to see Eva Mendes looking all sorts of fine in it. that's pretty much the only reason why I'd watch this movie now. It looked so promising with the first teaser trailer and then the comic con footage was terrible. I guess it's going to hard for Frank Miller to find work after this.

has anybody had the chance to read any of miller's recent comics? 'all star batman and robin' - for example - is some of the worst shite ever put to print. the dialogue completely reminds me of the over-the-top-contrived-forced-vulgar and very sad words that we saw in 'zack & miri make a porno'. it seems that once succesful icons must be aggresive, violent and use overly r-rated language to show they're still hip/cutting edge/and most of all relvant...let me add that lee's artwork is so fucking beautiful that it hurts to see the words that go along with it - so mr. lee, i mean you no offense.

the sad truth is that in executing projects in this manner, they immediately make themselves so utterly UN-relevant, that i wonder what it will take to make me take them serious again.

the storyline for the upcoming 3rd entry into miller's 'dark knight' books, has the caped crusader taking on al-queda...nuff' sadly said.
  • Delta Assault
Outrageous. The creator of such works as Dark Knight Strikes Again and All Star Batman can do no wrong.
  • That AICN review is just downright brutal. If I was in anyway involved with this movie and read it, I would probably burst into tears out of shame.
  • I don't think Frank Miller has any compelling story telling to offer at this point in his career. In his recent comic book work he seems to be trying to be edgy for the sake of shock value. The end result is a series that has been blasted far and wide by long time fans of his work. In terms of Sin City, I know he wrote that a response to not being able to write that story in other comic books. However, at this point I think he has lost that sense of frustration. Instead, he is trying to capture lightning in a bottle feeling that he fully understands the formula. That seems to be what Miller attempted to do with The Spirit, he thought he understood the work. While I haven't taken the opportunity to read the Will Eisner stories, I think Miller believes that his "formula" for brooding, babes, and bullets will always work in any story. The simple fact is that he doesn't know what to tell or how to tell it anymore. It's unfortunate, but that's just how it goes. Hopefully the partnership of Miller and Rodriguez will be as good as the previous outing, but time will tell.
  • i really had my finger crossed. :(
  • I Just Sharted.
Yeah the teaser trailer with the Untouchables theme was hot shit. Then when they showed off the dialogue and acting bits in the newer trailers it all fell apart.
  • I'm still going to watch this film.
  • Random critic
I saw this at a press screening yesterday. And all the early reviews are correct--this is the worst film I've seen in '08. Here's the thing, though--you want to know what's really good in it? Absolutely nothing.
  • Not even the women?
  • When I heard Miller was going to adapt The Spirit, I had my doubts. The second I found out he was going to copy Sin City's visual style, I knew it was over.

I'm a fan of Miller's earlier work, specifically his early Sin City books and The Dark Knight Returns. His newer CRAP, however, like The Dark Knight Strikes Back, is just terrible... I really don't understand why people hold him in such high praise still...
  • hahahahahaha. duh
  • It looks horrible. I still don't know why they allowed Miller to fully direct this himself. Everything I've seen for this makes it look and sound like a cheap porno. Except without any of the porno in it.
  • Charles
    My God!!!
  • I still want to see it
I know its going to be chessy as fuck but it looks like a roadrunner coyote cartoon to me.
  • Maybe they should of left in the Spirit's horribly racist sidekick, or followed the storyline where he fought stereotypical Asians, OR Maybe hollywood should leave making films to fucking filmmakers. What's next Jaden Smith directing, how about Paris Hilton "CUZ" this is where were heading.
  • Marco
Pete, did you go to the screening of it today? If so, what did you think?
  • Wow, am I shocked at this? Nope. Even though I didn't like Sin City, I knew that it had a backbone. This looks like it's taken all the crap that I hated about Sin City and amplified it to the max.

I picked that it was going to be a P.O.S. when I read that Frank Miller was going it solo. Stick to writing pal, at least we know you're good at it.
  • i knew frank miller directing this movie was a bad idea... can't believe they entrusted him with this for his debut.
  • You know, it's definitely not 300 or Sin City, but I actually enjoyed it. It's *totally* campy and kind of ridiculous, but it's a lot of damn fun to watch. I think audiences in general won't have the patience for it or appreciate it, but I sure did. The creativity goes a long way.
  • Worse than expected? Is that possible! I'm sure it won't bomb, mainly thanks to Mendes and Johansson
  • It won't bomb because Samuel L. Jackson is in it. Only person who can hold a movie better than him is Will Smith.
  • John
will smith? dood, are you gay?
  • Mark
I'm sorry, but you can't even name Samuel L. Jackson and Will Smith in the same sentence. Mr. Jackson is not enough to lure people into this movie. Go see a list of his movies and count the underperforming ones, that's a really long list (in the last years more or less every movie he made?). Soul Men flopped a few months ago, Black Snake Moan flopped (at least at the box office), same for Snakes on Plane and the list could go on and on. Let's take a different viewpoint: Name his last big success.
  • IRONMAN...does that count? lol
  • I think it is a DEFINITE BOMB! All the girls this christmas will be seeing Marley and Me or Benjamin Button, and the guys and boy teens who are seeking action will seek VALKYRIE or check out Benjamin Button because it has got Brad Pitt and it looks amazing because it is Fincher. This is going to tank, all The Spirit/comic book fans think it looks bad so I don't see this movie finding an audience at all. This will be a definite rental, because I'' be to busy gushing over Button and checking out Valkyrie.
  • Christopher M
This was a big mistake by both Lionsgate and Frank Miller....first off Miller tackling subject matter that wasn't his own and directing solo without any help.....I've been turned off this project since the beginning of the year..when I noticed that marketing was pretty much non-existent...LG should have looked over this project before committing to a release date and perhaps going to reshoots...but then again they released Saw V as bas as it was.....I have no idea why they thought this was going to be Sin City 2.... without Rodriquez or Snyder, Miller is just a comic book artister/writer which he is...stick to the great comics Miller!!
  • peter, you may have seen this but, http://www.blackfilm.com/20081211/features/thespi... here is an example of how bad this movie will be.
change the url from 'clip 5' to 1,2,3,4 or 6 for other clips, but 5 is the best.
  • for the love of god peter, please stop using the terms interwebs/internets, it reeks of douchebaggery. sorry!
