The first movie reviews of Frank Miller’s adaptation of Will Eisner’s The Spirit have begun to hit the interwebs, and it doesn’t look good.

Variety: “Frank Miller’s solo writing-directing debut plunges into a watery grave early on and spends roughly the next 100 minutes gasping for air. Pushing well past the point of self-parody” … “There’s a lot going on here, but none of it sticks — not the shopworn plotting nor the arch, stilted dialogue. The actors often seem to be delivering their lines in ironic quote marks, suggesting a straight-faced sendup of noir and comicbook conventions that, whatever the intended effect, falls mostly flat.”

AICN: “I’ve seen something that has taken the top prize from “Battlefield Earth.” … “Okay, Mr. Miller. Let’s get it on.” … “Seriously, it’s not. You clearly don’t have any idea what you’re doing. Someone, ANYONE, over at Lionsgate should have known this. Fuck, it’s their JOB to know this. But they didn’t.” … “Folks, this movie is that bad. I heartily recommend it if you have a strong stomach and an even stronger sense of Bad-Movie-Love. Otherwise, steer clear.”

Unique Geek: “The Spirit starts off crazy when we expect serious, then tries to pull it back in, then goes for weird juvenile sight gags then tries to be tough, and we’re disoriented.  Theres also a pathlogical fascination with a prop photocopy of Mendes’ rump.  If you took a shot every time the camera cuts to it, you would be wasted by the third act, and maybe “wasted” is the right word to end with here.  There’s a lot of work and opportunity that went by the wayside here, a lot of talented people and some great source material that never quite gels.  The parts that look good, look good, but maybe next time, they’ll hire a fox to put it all together.”

Newsarama: “The Spirit does a precarious balancing act juxtaposing great moments and terrible ones, leaving audiences likely be split over which makes the greater impression.” … “The mosh of comedic banter and noir-ish drama worked well for the most part, but ultimately, those aforementioned moments of potential that flash and peek out now and again are too far and few between to save The Spirit from being a disappointment..”

  • It cannot be much worse than it looks. "They call me the octopus. I have eight of everything!"

    It looks awful.
  • jamie
worse than expected? it looks like the worst movie ever
  • Dag Nabbit... I wan this to be god so badly.
  • Dag Nabbit... I want this to be good so badly.
  • I could tell it was out there. But one thing is that frank miller is a hack in every thing but making comic books and consulting on the movies he created the comic for. He took someone else work and try to make it like his own. I think the movie is just one big mixed message.
  • Rom
Dang. Even though it did look corny, I was kinda expecting it to surprise people and actually be sorta good.
  • Wow. Those were some harsh reviews. No one believes me when I tell them that this is going to be a bad movie.
  • i bet it isnt worse than i expected

the beautiful women are the only thing that ever caught my attention
  • But toilets are always funny....right?
  • I thought Twilight would be the best comedy of the year. Then I saw Punisher War Zone. Then I saw Nobel Son. And now I think the honors are going to go to this gem. I'm soooooooooooo excited. SO excited. To LAUGH.
  • i sense some subtle sarcasm here.
  • No seriously Twilight, Punisher and Nobel Son are some of the most hilarious movies I have ever seen. Ok, it's unintentional hilarity (probably) but that doesn't even matter. I truly am looking foward toThe Spirit. Christmas present to me!!
  • I was never excited by this, it just looks like sin city. Sin City was awesome, but this movie never looked that good, especially when i saw that trailer with the guy running around on buildings and it looked really bad. i will most likely rent it just for the girlies.
  • for the love of god peter, please stop using the terms interwebs/internets, it reeks of douchebaggery. sorry!
  • lol
  • egyptnation
no disrespect at all, but i find those terms so obnoxious.
  • what terms, 'lol'?
  • no, interwebs/internets.
  • i completely agree.
  • peter, you may have seen this but, http://www.blackfilm.com/20081211/features/thespi... here is an example of how bad this movie will be.
change the url from 'clip 5' to 1,2,3,4 or 6 for other clips, but 5 is the best.
  • Christopher M
This was a big mistake by both Lionsgate and Frank Miller....first off Miller tackling subject matter that wasn't his own and directing solo without any help.....I've been turned off this project since the beginning of the year..when I noticed that marketing was pretty much non-existent...LG should have looked over this project before committing to a release date and perhaps going to reshoots...but then again they released Saw V as bas as it was.....I have no idea why they thought this was going to be Sin City 2.... without Rodriquez or Snyder, Miller is just a comic book artister/writer which he is...stick to the great comics Miller!!
  • Worse than expected? Is that possible! I'm sure it won't bomb, mainly thanks to Mendes and Johansson
  • I think it is a DEFINITE BOMB! All the girls this christmas will be seeing Marley and Me or Benjamin Button, and the guys and boy teens who are seeking action will seek VALKYRIE or check out Benjamin Button because it has got Brad Pitt and it looks amazing because it is Fincher. This is going to tank, all The Spirit/comic book fans think it looks bad so I don't see this movie finding an audience at all. This will be a definite rental, because I'' be to busy gushing over Button and checking out Valkyrie.
  • It won't bomb because Samuel L. Jackson is in it. Only person who can hold a movie better than him is Will Smith.
  • Mark
I'm sorry, but you can't even name Samuel L. Jackson and Will Smith in the same sentence. Mr. Jackson is not enough to lure people into this movie. Go see a list of his movies and count the underperforming ones, that's a really long list (in the last years more or less every movie he made?). Soul Men flopped a few months ago, Black Snake Moan flopped (at least at the box office), same for Snakes on Plane and the list could go on and on. Let's take a different viewpoint: Name his last big success.
  • IRONMAN...does that count? lol
  • John
will smith? dood, are you gay?
  • You know, it's definitely not 300 or Sin City, but I actually enjoyed it. It's *totally* campy and kind of ridiculous, but it's a lot of damn fun to watch. I think audiences in general won't have the patience for it or appreciate it, but I sure did. The creativity goes a long way.
  • i knew frank miller directing this movie was a bad idea... can't believe they entrusted him with this for his debut.
  • Wow, am I shocked at this? Nope. Even though I didn't like Sin City, I knew that it had a backbone. This looks like it's taken all the crap that I hated about Sin City and amplified it to the max.

I picked that it was going to be a P.O.S. when I read that Frank Miller was going it solo. Stick to writing pal, at least we know you're good at it.
  • Marco
Pete, did you go to the screening of it today? If so, what did you think?
  • Maybe they should of left in the Spirit's horribly racist sidekick, or followed the storyline where he fought stereotypical Asians, OR Maybe hollywood should leave making films to fucking filmmakers. What's next Jaden Smith directing, how about Paris Hilton "CUZ" this is where were heading.
  • I still want to see it
I know its going to be chessy as fuck but it looks like a roadrunner coyote cartoon to me.
  • Charles
    My God!!!
  • It looks horrible. I still don't know why they allowed Miller to fully direct this himself. Everything I've seen for this makes it look and sound like a cheap porno. Except without any of the porno in it.
  • hahahahahaha. duh
  • When I heard Miller was going to adapt The Spirit, I had my doubts. The second I found out he was going to copy Sin City's visual style, I knew it was over.

I'm a fan of Miller's earlier work, specifically his early Sin City books and The Dark Knight Returns. His newer CRAP, however, like The Dark Knight Strikes Back, is just terrible... I really don't understand why people hold him in such high praise still...
  • Random critic
I saw this at a press screening yesterday. And all the early reviews are correct--this is the worst film I've seen in '08. Here's the thing, though--you want to know what's really good in it? Absolutely nothing.
  • Not even the women?
  • I'm still going to watch this film.
  • I Just Sharted.
Yeah the teaser trailer with the Untouchables theme was hot shit. Then when they showed off the dialogue and acting bits in the newer trailers it all fell apart.
  • i really had my finger crossed. :(
  • I don't think Frank Miller has any compelling story telling to offer at this point in his career. In his recent comic book work he seems to be trying to be edgy for the sake of shock value. The end result is a series that has been blasted far and wide by long time fans of his work. In terms of Sin City, I know he wrote that a response to not being able to write that story in other comic books. However, at this point I think he has lost that sense of frustration. Instead, he is trying to capture lightning in a bottle feeling that he fully understands the formula. That seems to be what Miller attempted to do with The Spirit, he thought he understood the work. While I haven't taken the opportunity to read the Will Eisner stories, I think Miller believes that his "formula" for brooding, babes, and bullets will always work in any story. The simple fact is that he doesn't know what to tell or how to tell it anymore. It's unfortunate, but that's just how it goes. Hopefully the partnership of Miller and Rodriguez will be as good as the previous outing, but time will tell.
  • That AICN review is just downright brutal. If I was in anyway involved with this movie and read it, I would probably burst into tears out of shame.
  • Delta Assault
Outrageous. The creator of such works as Dark Knight Strikes Again and All Star Batman can do no wrong.
  • jason B
has anybody had the chance to read any of miller's recent comics? 'all star batman and robin' - for example - is some of the worst shite ever put to print. the dialogue completely reminds me of the over-the-top-contrived-forced-vulgar and very sad words that we saw in 'zack & miri make a porno'. it seems that once succesful icons must be aggresive, violent and use overly r-rated language to show they're still hip/cutting edge/and most of all relvant...let me add that lee's artwork is so fucking beautiful that it hurts to see the words that go along with it - so mr. lee, i mean you no offense.

the sad truth is that in executing projects in this manner, they immediately make themselves so utterly UN-relevant, that i wonder what it will take to make me take them serious again.

the storyline for the upcoming 3rd entry into miller's 'dark knight' books, has the caped crusader taking on al-queda...nuff' sadly said.
  • Well that sucks, I was hoping this movie was going to be alright. I especially wanted to see Eva Mendes looking all sorts of fine in it. that's pretty much the only reason why I'd watch this movie now. It looked so promising with the first teaser trailer and then the comic con footage was terrible. I guess it's going to hard for Frank Miller to find work after this.
  • I was never interested in this. I'm not surprised and quietly comforted that it is going to tank.
  • HA! Netflix it is!
  • LOL... nice one :D
