First Look: Mickey Rourke in 13 (the 13 Tzameti Remake)

The first photo of Mickey Rourke in 13, the American remake of the award-winning French crime thriller 13 Tzameti. The film follows a naive young man who assumes a dead man’s identity and “finds himself embroiled in an underground world of power, violence,” and a Russian-roulette-style competition where the losers truly lose everything.

Writer/director Géla Babluani has returned to helm the remake, which began shooting last month in New York City. Jason Statham, 50 Cent, Ray Winstone and Ray Liotta also star. Thanks to /Film reader Christopher M for the tip. The film is currently scheduled for a 2010 release.

  • where did they find a hairy catepillar trained to sit on his upper lip??
  • When will they stop putting 50 pennies in movies.
  • I didn't think the guy could act that well but I guess the studios and producers see it in a different way. Maybe they think he brings in a younger audience since that's who his music is targeted at.

I wasn't a HUGE fan of the original so I'm a little disappointed they're using the same director. I love the concept of the movie, I just thought the story itself wasn't as flushed out as it could've been and the performances were rather mediocre. here's hoping that with a bigger budget and some big name talent attached, this version will be an improvement...which is rather rare for remakes.

There's only been one remake in the history of remakes that's worth watching. And that's John Carpenter's 'The Thing'

I rented 13 after hearing about it for some time....and I did like the movie. I thought the concept was good, some parts were really good...but overall it was just an okay movie.

However I am excited for tlhe remake. I think the first film layed a good foundation for it, but with this new adaptation, I think it could end up being a better and stronger film.

    Definately looking forward to this.
  • 13 Tzameti should never have been remade. This remake screams hollywood bumbling. I wouldn't be surprised if they completely change the second half of the film to suit an action fan's dreams of a happy ending.

Glad to see they are using the same director, however after the way Wanted turned out from director that brought us Night Watch and Day Watch, I am almost scared to see if it will be any good.

I would rather see Hollywood spend their time trying to make a film with an original direction and presentation.
  • I have a feeling this is going to turn into Rourke Sightings with the popularity of Wrestler.
  • I thought that 13 tzameti was an interesting concept. As far as the scenes of the "game" those scenes are some of the most suspenseful scenes I have ever seen. All the exhibition was not that entertaining to me though. I should watch it again and try to get into the less intense moments.
I am looking forward to the remake though. Again I think the concept is excellent, maybe revisiting the material will produce something wonderful.

Fity Cent is in it? Pass...
  • Jacob
Don Frye is also in this.
  • why are they always doing remakes?
  • i like the original, i am ok with the same director remaking it, that picture posted looks pretty cool, but seriously aside from mickey rourke, that cast is a joke. it would be alright if their performances were toned down and subtle, but the second it feels like a big hollywood actor playing these roles, its going to fail hard. the first one is successfull because its a bunch of noname random people. then again you american clowns will probably eat this up. it will be funny to see such a dark film about russian roulette advertised so hard to young mtv teens.
  • This movie sounds like it's going to be pretty good. Especially now that Mr. Rourke is a great actor now, I mean he was before to me and all but now the world should know his name after the awards and stuff.
  • I think it's because foreign language films never do good over here in the U.S. I have seen a few that do really well like City of God, but the majority fail miserably.
  • Like a friend once said to me; "Is it foreign? Well I come to the cinema to watch, not read subtitles." The majority of people (which is shown by the amount of remakes and the lack of financial gain from exhibiting foreign films overseas) simply can't be bothered to engage with the images of a film while also engaging with the literary nature of reading the subtitles. Which I find sad at times.

Still, if the original director of '13' is at the helm, then I still have hope for this film being something more than 'tripe'. I mean, I was a fan of the 'Funny Games' remake...
  • Very interesting concept.
Can't understand the want to remake a movie that one has already made, though. When I make shorts by the time I finish editing I hate the fucking movie because I've been listening to the same damn dialogue for the past few weeks. I don't care if I wrote it, it friggin sucks. Can't imagine remaking one. Especially one of a feature length.
  • This has Mickey Rourke returns to nuttiness written all over it. Original film is a decent enough pot boiler but all the elements for this remake that are being tossed just give me a weird feeling.
  • dead in the eyeeees. Like, no really, he looks possessed.

50 cent really kills it for me... I love Mickey, the 2 Ray's and don't mind Jason but 50??? Oh god...
  • 50 cent needs to go back to the studio and make a good album...Mickey Rourke looks like a crazy ass janitor from my high school...

Finally watched the original through netflix the other day. Great stuff. It will be hard to translate it over.
  • oh jesus. WHY MUST YOU RUIN EVERYTHING I LOVE LOVE, HOLLYWOOD?
  • I think the trailer for the original was brilliant but the concept wasn't enough for a whole movie. If you saw the trailer, that was it, you had basically seen the whole movie. Perhaps they can flesh out the story some in the remake.

Mickey just keeps getting more creepy looking.
  • This reminds me. I should go out and get the original so I dont have to watch this
  • oh jesus. WHY MUST YOU RUIN EVERYTHING I LOVE, HOLLYWOOD?

This is what I mean about Hollywood ruining movies. Are we in such stagnate state of creativity that we cannot come up with original movies of our own, tthat we have to remake everything under the sun? What ever happened to "if it ain't broke"? Tzameti 13 is an intense film, and 1 reason is because its filmed in black in white. Hollywood just can't pull these types of flix off, they just get lost in translation. I really don't know why they even try. Sad.

I always thought if they did a remake it should be like a cross between "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?", "The Usual Suspects" and "The Departed". The casting choices sound like they've got a really varied cast of tough guys, which this'll need. The original director was great, I'd have preferred an American director, though, just to make this it's own thing. Glad to see some progress on this, I wondered what became of it.
  • Mickey Rourke might be able to act, but 50 Cent can't.
  • peace81
remake will rock!the original movie is very intance and interesting.i agree the comment about 50 cent thogh, but he is a big name and certain demographics will be attrackted to it, like the other famous actors in this movie, tickets will sell, that is what it counts at the end of the day, when it comes to Hollywood big budget remakes.

This really isn't Hollywood remaking the movie; it's Gela Bubluani, who wrote and directed the movie, remaking it. He has all creative control over the production. And while it's bigger than the $50,000 budget of the original, it's by no means a big-budget Hollywood film. It still has the intesity of the original film and there are no big Hollywood special effects that ruin that aspect of it. I think Gela did a great job with the original (and got his cast to make the movie with no pay) and I think this project was his baby, and now he's got a studio to back him so that he can make it how he really wants to make it. Good for him. I hope it does well.
