First Look: Bruce Willis in Surrogates

Walt Disney Pictures has released the first official photo for U571/Terminator 3 helmer Jonathan Mostow’s big screen adaptation the Robert Vanditti graphic novel Surrogates (the graphic novel is available on Amazon for around $14). The sci-fi thriller has an interesting concept, but I found myself unimpressed by an early sizzle reel that was shown at the Walt Disney Showcase in September. Click on the photo above to enlarge.

The official plot synopsis follows: FBI agents (Bruce Willis and Radha Mitchell ) investigate the mysterious murder of a college student linked to the man who helped create a high-tech surrogate phenomenon that allows people to purchase unflawed robotic versions of themselves—fit, good looking remotely controlled machines that ultimately assume their life roles—enabling people to experience life vicariously from the comfort and safety of their own homes. The murder spawns a quest for answers: in a world of masks, who’s real and who can you trust?

The film also stars Rosamund Pike, James Francis Ginty, Boris Kodjoe and VingRhames. Surrogates hits theaters on September 25th 2009.

I had some low expectations because of Mostow’s involvement but the pic looks kinda cool....I'll wait for a trailer
  • Why does that look like a scene from Live Free Die Hard?
  • ditto
  • mixed with that Tom Cruise movie Minority Report...? Was that the movie with the crazy future tellers and the fancy computer?
  • yeah, and GATTACA, too, I think
  • This seems a little off of the source. I love the comic. I just hope this isn't Die Hard 5.
  • Hmm dunno what to think of this first i heard of it... die/irobot?
  • A grittier version of "The Island." Yawn.
  • I still don't understand how some people liked that movie
  • If I knew nothing about this film and saw it on a marquee, I'd say to myself "Hm, a movie about surrogate mothers. Must be a comedy." But no. We got Bruce Willis as an FBI agent in some crazy scifi flick.
  • yeah i think the title Surrogate is really bad. I thought this was a rom-com until i read the article
  • The graphic novel was actually pretty good and has a great concept that could definitely work on the big screen. I guess this is the main character's better looking surrogate. The movie can definitely be made better then the book, the book was really short. I like Bruce and I think he was good choice for this.

Oh ya, surrogate robots and the like are all fun and games, until there's a murder that Bruce Willis or Will Smith has to investigate. Then everything goes downhill.
  • yeah iRobot, dude...
  • It's somewhat better than Michael Bay's other tripe.
  • i got high hopes because of that high concept

They should have just called it Die Hard 5
  • I have to say that this doesn't sound like a Disney movie. I'm very surprised this doesn't have Raven Simone in it.

EDIT: Oh never mind, they're distributing under Touchstone Pictures.
  • interesting premise. if it's a disney movie, is it gonna be a pg-13 movie cause that would just kill it i think...

On a limb, I see hints of WestWorld, Stepford, and some others with concepts that are worth updating without the constraints of the "remake" problem.

David Brin wrote a very entertaining novel called Kiln People that includes a lot of similar ideas that would make a good sci-fi film.

Willis always does the genre well.
  • Is it just me or is Willis lookin' OLD here.
  • Berlin Calling
I got a copy of SURROGATES back in 2005 at Comicon. A little indie comic from a no-name company with an unknown writer and artist. Now the movie's almost here. Talk about fast track. Who are they blowing to get this movie done?
  • He's really gettin' old.

Surrogates is taking the idea from an old movie WestWorld but predictable. This is more of a cross between I Robot and the Stepford Wives. At least Stepford Wives was more suspenseful than this movie it was a little slow in some spots but there was enough action, but not like Die Hard movies. Plus, it did not cost me any money to see it.
