IMDb’s Top 25 Most Searched Movies of 2008

The Internet Movie Database have announced the top 25 most searched movies of 2008, and the results aren’t as predictable as you would think. Yes, The Dark Knight, Twilight, and Harry Potter hold the top three spots (in that order) But what is the fourth most searched for film of 2008? Disney’s Tron sequel TR2N. Not bad for a film which exploded onto the scene in July with a surprise teaser trailer appearance at Comic Con. Another surprise is Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables, which somehow is #5 on the list, higher than movies like Iron Man or Indiana Jones.

A lot of 2007 Award winners also make appearances on the list: No Country for Old Men at #8, Juno at #9, and There Will Be Blood at #12. I am surprised to see Cloverfield all the way down at #16. You would think the film would have generated a lot of searches, but now that I think of it — the movie hit theaters in mid January, and all the buzz happened in the second half of 2007. Upcoming geek film properties: Terminator Salvation (#17), Dragonball (#19), Star Trek #22 and Tranformers: Revenge of the Fallen (#24) also make appearances.

The Shawshank Redemption and The Godfather appear on the bottom of the list at #25 and #23 respectively. When The Dark Knight was first released, it hit #1 on IMDb’s user rated Top 250 movies of all time chart, and even caused a mini fanboy war which resulted in Dark Knight fans launching a campaign to downvote The Godfather to keep Dark Knight on top. I think a lot of the attention from The Dark Knight’s placement spilt over to the other two top films. Check out the full list below:

1. The Dark Knight (2008)
2. Twilight (2008)
3. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009)

  • Like everybody else, I only heard about 'The Expendables' through this site a few weeks ago! Also, I'm surprised that 'Inglorious Basterds' isn't on that list. By the looks of the IMDb boards, Tarantino has a huge fan-base on the site.
  • Yeah, this is the first I have heard about The Expendables. Maybe these stats are rigged. Everything looks in play except that movie. I wonder how much it costs to become number 5.
  • Yeah it's kind of strange. I've never heard of it as well. Where does the interest come from?
  • wow, people have such bad taste in movies. TR2N??? Ew, Tron was one of the worst films to come out of the 1980s.
  • Satin Satan Suntan
    No it wasn't.
  • I think Into the Wild was unexpected. Great movie but I didn't think it had that much of an audience.
  • I really like that movie, and yeah, most people never heard of it.
  • Another day; another list.
  • Isn't it crazy how The Dark Knight is at the top of almost any kind of list? I would just like to point that out and show everyone that it's not a coincidence.

I'm kidding of course but the big surprise on this list is Dragonball at #19. I figured it might crack the top 25 in the last place available.
  • I'm getting sick of TDK
  • Yeah and I'm getting sick of people saying that. It seems to be the new trend, rag on one of the best movies of the year.
  • starscream9289
Oh yeah, those where the good ol' days. Back when fanboys actually thought that TDK was better than The Godfather. Where have those days gone.....?
  • Ya know, I saw the TDK. It was a really good movie, but was it billion dollar box office, top of every list material? Not in my book. Maybe i'm odd in some way. Ledger was ultra-creepy though.
  • skaught
    yeah, take that shawshit.
  • Chip
You've got to be kidding. The Shawshank Redemption is one of the greatest films of all time. Is The Dark Knight your favorite movie?
  • skaught
shawshenk is one of america's favorite movies of all-time.
  • Fun story about Shawshank Redemption. I showed it to a friend of mine and he liked it. He said it was ok. We looked it up on IMDb and it was #2. The next day I was surprised to discover it was his favorite movie of all time. So there is an interesting philosophical question here, of man influencing society or society influencing man when it comes to IMDb.
  • Chip
That's interesting about your friend. However, personally, I don't let the public's rating of movies influence my favorites. I love The Shawshank Redemption, and it probably is in my top 5 favorite films. However, there are some films that don't make IMDB's list (such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Dumbo, Close Encounters, etc.) that I think should definitely be somewhere on them. The Dark Knight was really good, but it being #4 is ludicrous.

In my opinion, "Juno" wasn't have as great as what critics made it out to be. Ellen Page, fantastic. The movie, not so. "Into the Wild", "No Country for Old Men", and "There Will Be Blood" were good as were others listed.
  • Kimberly Cooper
    I spelled have wrong. Half
  • genghisron
If anything, this list is a testament to the greatness of both "The Godfather" and "Shawshank Redemption"
  • Hal Function
Hey, wait a minute. Superbad wasn't released in 2008!
  • Chip
It's really a crying shame that WALL-E isn't on this list. Not that it really matters, as WALL-E will probably prove to be a classic over time. It was still pretty successful at B.O., but there are still plenty who haven't yet seen it. Similar to film's like Shawshank, A Christmas Story, and It's a Wonderful Life, WALL-E will probably prove to be incredibly popular with home audiences.
  • I have not even heard of THE EXPENDABLES. What is it about? TIme to help it move up a level.
It is cool to see The Departed still on the list. And before STAR TREK? That is pretty impressive I would not have guessed that.
  • stz
twilight second is just plain sad.
  • no, TR2N is more sad.
  • TR2N at #4? SERIOUSLY? Wow that truly is an incredible surprise. Same with the Sly Stalone flick The Expendables... first time I've even heard of it.
  • jason B
it is utterly shocking for me, that watchmen isn't in the top 25...
  • That is pretty sad. Especially since the trailer came out with The Dark Knight. Maybe it means not a lot of people are interested other than the people that know what it's about.
  • El Bart-O
POEPLE! this is a list of the most searched for movies of 08, whether they were released this year or not. It's not a "Best movies of 08" list.
  • all i can say is INterestinggg
  • hal jordan
TDK was good. Nothing more nothing less.
