Delgo Sets Record for Worst Wide-Release Opening Ever

Jonathan Crow at Yahoo Movies reports that this weekend, a small animated film named Delgo opened on 2,160 screens and made a paltry $511,920. According to Crow’s break down, that’s an average of about $237 per screen, or about two people in the theater per showing. By comparison, Doubt made $507,226 this weekend, but it only played on a miniscule 15 screens. This means that Delgo essentially breaks a record for the worst opening ever for a wide release film (Head on over to Box Office Mojo’s list of “Worst Openings at the Box Office for 2,000+ theaters” to see who else made the list).

According to the movie’s IMDB page, Delgo’s plot summary is as follows: “In an exotic divided land, Delgo, an adventurous dreamer but naive teenager, must rally his group of troubled youth and some unlikely friends to protect their world from conflict between the terrestrial Lockni people, who harness the mysteries of the land, and the winged Nohrin people, who rule the skies.” Sounds like a standard animated film plotline geared towards kids, but the reason the movie failed seems to be two-fold: Lackluster execution and virtually non-existent marketing.

Check out Crow’s post for a detailing of how the movie was conceived and created. It’s a tragic story about the hardships of independent filmmaking and the occasional futility of independent distribution.

Discuss: Did you see Delgo this weekend? Have you ever even heard of Delgo?

  • I had read about it, but knew no one would go see it. Way to go, soon-to-be-bankrupt studio!
  • EPIC Fail . lol
  • I saw the trailer (short advertisement), either attached to Transporter 3 or my second viewing of Quantum of Solace, I can't remember. It looked absolutely terrible. So many things were wrong with what I saw, and with a computer animated movie, what you SEE is the selling point. The style is bad - the characters are extremely ugly, the computer graphics looked like something from the 90's, the animations were stiff, there was no depth, it was just plain bad. I knew immediately that no one would go see this.
  • It came out ahead of it's time.
  • i never even heard of this film lol
  • saw the trailer when looking through trailers on apple.com. animation looked HORRIBLE and the story looked stupid. Even my 3 year old was bored by the trailer.
  • LOL. I showed my 5 year-old the trailer, cause I thought he'd want to see it, and he was like, "that looks dumb." I had to agree. I think it looks and sounds awful.
  • LMAO. I did the same thing. We saw this on ABC Family or something of that nature. So I asked if he would like to see that, and he was pretty quick to say "no" and that it didn't look good.

Before the Yahoo report, I hadn't heard of this movie before

I had seen the trailer twice in theatres, but both times thought that it came off as an extremely uninteresting kids movie trying to cover itself by getting big name voice actors. It's sad to hear since the story of the film's creation and distribution is so underdog/indie in nature, but a bad movie is a bad movie I guess. I think a doc about "the story behind the biggest box office failure of all time" would get people to buy tickets though...
  • I've never even heard of this movie. And the art looks horrible. Those characters are really ugly.
  • I read the play "DOUBT" and it is very good. I wonder if the movie is as good as the play.
  • Cinemaniac1979
They lost me at "who harness the mysteries of the land." What does that even mean? -5 for poor writing.

    I'm a big fan of Crow's work. He's hilarious.

I think the Studio is here in Atlanta, GA. When I was in school 4 years ago - I heard some student interned at the studio and worked on the project. And even they said that it sucked from the start. I actually recall them coming in and showing some of the work..and it felt sooo out dated. That's the trickiness with technology, if you can't put the work out fast enough - The work automatically becomes dated.

I bet they went through a lot of student interns to get that project done...and it shows.
  • Hardly a surprise that a film no one has heard of has the worst opening day ever.
  • epic failure
  • hey david-
why don't you just link to the tab on box office mojo that says "very wide release 2,000+ theatres)? delgo is at the top of that list.
  • Thanks! Fixed.
  • arthera09
i was bed ridden last weekend and was watching saturday morning cartoons and saw a few previews for it then. it looked no better than any of the horrible saturday morning cartoons. now i me a good children's movie and this does not appear to be one.
  • When printing out a list of movies being released for november and december, delgo was on it. the only comment i could write next to it was "freddie prince jr does a voice and its going to be terrible" turns out i was right!
  • he's still hot.
  • Is he? He hasn't worked since She's All That... god I love that movie. Maybe he has worked but nothing will compare with his role in that. nothinggggggg!
  • I agree. I think the last thing he did was driving down highway 40 in a big ol' pick up truck with his pal Brak.
  • I have to agree he is still hot. A handful of years ago I was at a party and he was there let me just say film and TV do not do justice to his good looks.
  • Val Kilmer's voice is in this! haaaaaaa. PS That dragon (dinosaur?) on the right makes me dieeee. What's the deal with his hands man?
  • and he went to Juilliard... oh god

My favorite part: They've been making this movie for like 10 years, and you can tell from the cast. Freddie Prinze, Jennifer Love Hewitt, CHRIS KATTAN, and the topper, Anne "Dead for 5 years" Bancroft.
  • damn lol
  • Jon
    What's Delgo?? O.o
  • Sean
Don't really know anything about it other than its awful reviews, but one thing I do know is that my local theater has it playing, but Slumdog Millionaire and Milk are nowhere to be found. WTF :S
  • Why didn't this just go straight to DVD?
  • I had heard of it like once before it opened. I bet there will be some people who go see it now just to see if it's really that bad.
  • Eagle
I work on the animation industry and I had a lot of friends that worked on that movie.
Nobody worked there for more than 3 months, The owner changed his mind every minute on the story and a lot of work went to the trash.
They end up using out of school kids and you can see the result.
The company has a very very bad reputation on the CG industry.
  • who's the company?
  • Ender
    My 2 cents:

    - Cut them some slack for trying something different.

    - It didn't look good by today's standards, but it was supposed to come out four years ago (http://www.scifidimensions.com/Mar03/delgo.htm),and if it had, I bet it would have done better.

    - Although Fathom (the company that put it out) might not be that reputable as per Eagle's post above, I give a lot of credit to small studios for trying; a lot of them won't get things right on the first attempt, but that just means they should give it another shot.

Somebody shouldn't have quit his 9 to 5...

haha delgo, i stumbled upon the crappy trailer on yahoo movies of this before it came out. Horrific, looks like a joke or something on the children's network. glad they didn't market a film that looks that bad, it'll just all go down the drain.
  • Looks like fun. Is it out for the Wii yet?

Wait...this isn't the trailer for a video game?
  • I'm sorry, but that poster looks awful. I do not understand the need for this to be a wide release.
  • goro
What was that Jessica Simpleton movie that made about $400? I don't think it was really very wide, but still, in terms of failure....
  • Ending Spoiler: The purple gorillas eat the lizards.
  • That sounds made up but I'll take your word. Now I can't go watch Delgo because i know the ending.
  • I hadn't even heard of this movie until I was looking up movie times for Slumdog and saw the theater was also showing this. I clicked on the link to find out what it was and it didn't grab my interest.
  • mttkauffman
wow so I just watched the trailer for this out of curiosity and to me it just looks like a horrible MMO almost like a World of Warcraft movie. I can't believe it made as much as it did. I hadn't even head about it before I read about how bad it did.
  • This post is the first time I'd heard of this haha
  • backpack jack
    meesa called Jar Jar Binks
  • Ever
Can't blame the guy for trying something new. Too bad it failed....it would have been a cool underdog story.

Have they put out other movies? Do they have anything else in the pipeline?
  • Daniel
Back around 2004, I was with a college group that was visiting a few graphic design firms and such in Atlanta as part of a push by the university to help us make contacts and find jobs.

We were taken to a business called " The Macquarium," who were thrilled to death that they were working on a "major Hollywood production" that had hired "big name stars". They showed us some of the work that they had done so far, and some of us in that group literally couldn't hold back our laughter at how idiotic and dated it looked. And even so, they were offering every one of us jobs to work on it. I think most of us were Juniors and Seniors at the time and actually were looking for work, but none of us wanted to be anywhere near that train wreck.
  • Eagle
I understand and respect small company trying to be independent, but I will never agree on using people to death to achive it.
You should read the artist comments on the 3d Forums , they talk very bad of the owner/director of Delgo.
I'm glad that it fail, this will show the guy that you need to have happy and motivated people in order to do a good product.
