New Photos: Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes

In the last couple months we’ve brought you on set paparazzi photos of the cast, but now Warner Bros has released the first two official photos from Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes. The photo above features Robert Downey Jr as Sherlock, alongside Holmes’ trusted colleague Dr. Watson, played by Jude Law. The photo below features a bloodied, shirtless Holmes in some king of fighting arena. Anthony Peckham’s script is based on a mixture of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic tales and the Lionel Wigram comic book adaptation which presents a more active version of the famous detective. And for Warner Bros to choose this photo as one of the first photos to release is making a statement - this is not your father’s Sherlock Holmes.

Rachel McAdams costars as Irene Adler, Sherlock’s love interest, and Mark Strong is on board to play the villain Blackwood. Sherlock Holmes and his stalwart partner Watson are sent on their latest challenge. Revealing fighting skills as lethal as his legendary intellect, Holmes will battle as never before to bring down a new nemesis and unravel a deadly plot that could destroy the country.

Can somebody tell me what the problem was with my father´s Sherlock Holmes?
  • Absolutely nothing wrong with your Father's Sherlock Holmes. It's lovely to curl up with a bowl of popcorn and watch Basil Rathbone or Peter Cushing on PBS or Netflix. That's a great Sunday night. But that's not going to draw me to the theater. Just like there was nothing wrong with your Father's James Bond. The new Bond movies don't detract from Connery's contribution to the franchise, but they have a new level of energy that they didn't have before.

The world changes and entertainment adapts, some of it for the good, some of it not, but that's the way it's always been. A new slant on something doesn't necessarily mean that it was broken or what's come before it is wrong, it's just another way of looking at something.
  • Looks great.
  • I never imagined Sherlock Holmes as a guy with his shirt off. But I'm still glad I saw it. <3RDJ<3
  • I am pumped for this film! I just saw TROPIC THUNDER and Robert Downey Jr. is a beast. I hope this movie is magnificent!
  • Why is there a Fight Club in this movie? :P
  • Michael
    Also my first thought!
  • to show that sherlock holmes knows how to fight. the studio said that was lost in the last few movies. well no one used it in any of them.
  • It is actually Bare Knuckle Boxing, and this is Snatch 2: Teeth.
  • thurgood
ill be curious to see how this turns out i really am

because sherlock holmes' gift is that his observation skills are unparalleled and his deductions from those observations are just as sharp.

but then this is a young sherlock holmes so hopefully they still capture the spirit and dont completely butcher it into some hollywood thriller piece
  • What a very confusing and intriguing shot of Sherlock Holmes in what appears to be a fighting pit, speckled with blood. And ripped.
  • i hope this movie turns out to be good. they already have a good cast and a good director, all they need is a good script.
  • My goodness, RDJ looks great! I can't wait to see this. It'll be nice to see Rachel McAdams - I feel like I haven't seen her in anything for a long time.
  • Robert Downey, Jr., and Jude Law are both great actors. Let's hope this movie has great writers to boot. This movie has a lot of potential, let's hope it lives up to it.
  • I think this is gonna be a good movie...Especially with Robert Downey Jr.'s humor, it should be fun to watch...

Where is sherlocks hat dammit!!!!! That is the one thing that i know about this franchise and I am just not seeing it.
  • this definitely should be interesting.
  • Robert Downey Jr. is so awesome. Hopefully this new movie will revive people's interest in reading those old books about Sherlock Holmes again.

I'm a huge Sherlock Holmes fan... and Holmes in a fighting area? wtf?
  • RDJ looks all JCVD about life in that second pic.
  • I just recently read a whole whack load of the Sherlock Holmes stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle so I'm super stoked for this! Holmes boxed in his youth, was in amazing shape and constantly went in 'disguise' to the rougher parts of London. It looks like those aspects of his charactor will deffiantely be on display.

It's actually kind of interesting how much of what people 'think' is Sherlock Holmes actually came about after the stories. It's an classic charactor and having it reinvented by such an amasing actor will be a treat to see. If a person wants to see the 'old school' Sherlock there are allready plenty of perfectly good movies about him. I want something fresh and new! Let's have some fun with this amasing literary legend.
  • I absolutely cannot wait for this movie. My mother had most of the Sherlock Holmes books and I read them all when I was a young girl. I've been rereading them lately and really enjoying them. I think injecting the comic adaptation qualities into it are a perfect way to give the series new life. Great casting too. Very excited.

man, this movie has a great cast!
  • I don't know how I feel about seeing Holmes in a fighting arena but knowing that Robert Downey Jr. is an avid martial arts fan, I'm kind of excited to see what will become of it. :)

I'm loving Jude Law DR. Watson and action driven Holmes
I can't wait for the movie!

I can't wait to see this movie. Especially the very talented and HOT DIRECTOR Guy Richie who is one of the greatest Directors on the other side of the pond. I hope the movie is a blockbuster for Ritchie who so deserves it!

Jeremy Brett was the consummate Sherlock. Wish Guy would finish the stories on film that Jeremy was set to do before he passed away.
