MTV was able to catch up with director Kenneth Branagh over the weekend to talk about his upcoming big screen adaptation of Marvel’s Thor. Branagh explained that he was attracted to the project for the opportunity “to work on a story about one of the immortals, Gods, extraordinary beings, inter-dimensional creatures” and that “it’s a chance to tell a big story on a big scale. It’s a human story right in the center of a big epic scenario.”

Whoa, “Big Story”? “Big Scale”? Branagh is saying all the right things. And who is going to play Thor? Too early to tell as they are still working on “getting the story and the visual effects together”. Because, you never want to cast the lead role before you plan the visual effects…

i was never able to get into Thor before i read J. Michael Straczynski's take on the character and its AWESOME!!! I hope they look at his run for ideas and inspiration

i always used to think Thor was really lame and i hated his costume

the new costume designed by Oliver Coipel is great and i would love to see that up on the big screen

i think its going to be EXTREMELY difficult for Marvel to try and make this fit into the same universe as Iron Man though, comics is one thing, but making it work on the big screen is alot different

My hope is that, in order to play it into the fairly realistic universe they've built beginning with Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, they use some sort of framing device where this is all presented as the guy remembering it from the modern day (for some reason, I kinda see it like the video game Assassin's Creed). Then, a la The Ultimates, the entire backstory would be in question as to whether he's just insane or not. Do one scene at the beginning and one at the end to set the context, and let everything in between play out as a fantasy so that the audience can get into it.
  • The only way to do Thor right is to go BIG in every way and never look back.

Tagline: "He makes Superman looks like a sissy band kid"
  • they need to hurry up if they want to meet their deadline of 2010. i dont know if they have a script yet, i know they dont have casting as of yet. they might have to move this back to '11 if they dont hurry it up.
  • and then i JIZZED IN MY PANTS.
  • LOL...
  • I have a feeling Thor will choke...I hope it doesn't, but I dunno...I have a bad feeling about this movie...
  • and with big muscles!....
  • So which one of the go to guys will it be? Diesel or The Rock?

Seriously though, depending on how they make this movie I may have trouble putting my brain on hold to fit it in with the rest of the Avengers.
  • Ultimate Thor or gtfo!

How do you make a movie about a norse god and have it on a small scale?

I am really exited for this movie. I've been reading Michael Straczynski's new take on Thor and it's great. Before that I just thougt Thor was dumb

I wonder who will be cast as Thor. I've been thinking that Alexander Skarsgård would play an awesome Thor since seeing him in True Blood.

i trust Kenneth Branagh he a cool guy
  • lpfanaddy
I just hope he's able to get this made the way he wants to make it. I've always found Branagh to be a bit pretentious but still a good actor/director.
  • no more comic book movies, please. i'm really tiring of origin stories and the inevitable franchises they spawn like locusts.

IF MY FRIENDS ON MARVEL THINK THEY HAVE THE RIGHT STORY/SCRIPT ABOUT A THOR PROJECT/MOVIE THEY ARE TOTALLY OUT OF THE SITUATION HOW A MOVIE OF A THOR CHARACTER HAS TO BE, I DO KNOW WHAT I' AM TALKING ABOUT BECAUSE I THINK IT IS TIME FOR SOMETHING TOTALLY NEW BECAUSE IF YOU TAKE A LOOK AT THE LAST "TERMINATOR" MOVIE THAN YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT I MEAN AFTER IT YOU CANNOT BRING MORE ACTION NO NO NO! FOR YOUR INFORMATION I HAVE READ IN THE PAST FORTY YEARS OVER 10.000 MARVEL COMIC BOOK THOR WAS AND STILL IS MY FAVORITE ONE ACTUALY I HAVE READY WRITTEN THE FIRST PART OF A TRILOGY TITLE THE MIGHTY THOR IN
"KEEPER OF THE SEVEN BLACK DIAMONDS" PART ONE. SO FINALY BEFORE MARVEL START ENYTHING TO DO ABOUT A MOVIE THEY SHOULD TAKE A LOOK WHAT I GOT BECAUSE THE INVESTORS DO ASK FOR RESULTS, MARVEL DOES ASKING FOR RESULTS, THE FANS ALL OVER THE WORLD DO ASK FOR IT, AND FANALY THE WORLD ON WHICH WE LIVE UPON DOES AS WELL.
MY DESTINATION WITH THIS PROJECT I HAVE WROTE IS TO BRING THE PEOPLE OUTSIDE THE BIG SCREEN TO CLAP THEIR HANDS FOR THE GOOD DEETS OUR HEROS DONE NOT IN IT BECAUSE THIS IS JUST PLAYED... MARVEL FOREVER. GEORGE PILALIDIS A MARVEL FAN FROM THE GOLDEN AGE TO BE CONTINUED...
