Iran Condemns The Wrestler?

Iranian media has condemned Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler, claiming that it shows the West’s ignorance and prejudice towards Iran. The scene in question is where Mickey Rourke, who plays Randy “The Ram” Robinson, has to fight Earnest “The Cat” Miller, who plays a character named The Ayatollah, who dresses in Middle Eastern garb and waves the Iranian flag before attacking Robinson with the pole. What the Iran press don’t seem to understand is that The Ram and The Ayatollah are wrestlers from the 1980’s wrestling boom.

The Ayatollah is clearly a fictional take of The Iron Sheik, a popular wrestler in the 1980’s who drew heat from the real-life politics of the time, notably the Iran hostage crisis, and the animosity Americans had for the country of Iran. Was it politically correct? Hell no, but we weren’t living in politically correct times.

The film begins in modern times, and The Ayatollah is no longer a wrestler, but instead a used car dealership owner. The match in question is a 20th anniversary rematch. So in other words, these are two cartoon characters from the 1980’s, who are returning to the ring for one last go, one last payday. It would make no sense to present a politically correct Iranian professional wrestler, because that is not what wrestling gimmicks of the 1980’s were all about. I feel stupider for responding to this claim, but I felt it needed to be said.

  • This isn't as much "people" being sensitive as it is Islamic governments being angry. Oh, and I found the stereotypical American in Jet Li's Fearless to be hysterical - as a comparison.
  • REAL6
All i care about seeing is The Ayatollah smoking crack and sniffing coke in one of his cars like the Iron Shiek.

    "SHIEKY BABY"
  • Doesn't Iran hate everything we do in the US.
  • thank you for stereotyping Iran.
  • You can't tell me that the government of Iran doesn't like the US. I'm not talking about the people of Iran. It's the same way with Iraq.
  • Even if this was true, which is not. I wouldn't be very fond of a government/country that tries to tell me what to do and control me. Not only that but pose a threat to my country.

It is very easy to be from US and think that everybody else is the bad one. Be a little humble, all of you, and try to analyze things from the other person perspective.

Completely agreed. Though I dont think even with that explanation the Iran government would agree with you. People are just too sensitive now a days. Nothing about wrestling has ever, and will ever, be politically correct.
  • I am definitely sick of the hostility that Americans have for Iranians and Iran. Iranians are wonderful, normal people who are sick of this stupid politics game as much as we Americnas are sick of it, too.
  • aniranian
Thank you very much for your way of thinking, I visited this blog by sudden and when I read your comment and some others like you, I felt my heart is getting warm :)
Since I am an Iranian person and I really do love people from all over the world, I adore your point of view about us. Moreover, I should tell you that I have seen "the wrestler" last night, but I didn't feel any negative sense to it. As you might know there are two political poles in iran; the government and the reformists ( that you might heard about them, "The Green movement" ). We recognize the government as a dictatorship and we want our own Republic.
To conclude, in addition to some American political viewpoints, we are also aware of the governments murders and we are sick of their tendency toward the world.
  • The Iranian press (which is government controlled) will use anything they can find to condemn the United States. The truth is, though, there is a large population of pro-American Iranian citizens who know better than to believe it. I just wanted to throw that out there before people start bashing the entire Iranian population based on this.

I'm sure a bootleg of this movie will be quite popular among certain groups of Iranians.
  • thank you for making sense. many iranians are embarrassed by their government, like many Americans are ashamed of Bush.

some readers here on Slash Film are REALLY stupid, racist and ignorant.
  • Who cares about rationality when racism is involved?

You can go to hell Darren Aronofsky, you and your historical correctness.
  • It's alright that they're condemning the movie. It's their own fault for not getting to watch a great movie. I hear its great anyway, I haven't seen it yet but I'm sure i will enjoy it.
  • Its a slightly different culture looking in from the outside. To some it may appear as an insult, without properly researching the material. Because of this, I say F You Iran do your Fing Homework.
  • I think Iran (yes, the entire country) is going to mistranslate your response and condemn Slashfilm as well. Don't use Iran and stupid in the same... paragraph (book?) or you're in trouble!
  • John S.
The real injustice is that the Iranian government got to see this film before I did...
  • I SO remember the Iron Shiek...lol...a villain of a wrestler. It's amusing when a country or a specific group condemns a film because all it turns into is free publicity.
  • This is a stunt to stop iranians from watching the movie. Many of you may not know, but the movie is propoganda against uranium enrichment. There is also a fear of iranians converting to christianty, or homosexuality (because of rourkes sexy blonde locks)
  • This is as stupid as the city Batman suing...umm....Batman.
  • Sucks to be Iran...They will be missing out on a great movie...
  • I honestly think that if Iran made a movie about wrestlers and had a stereotypical American in it, we wouldn't condemn their movie. It probably wouldn't get that much attention here but still, we wouldn't ban it.
  • It accused the Hollywood studio of participating in a campaign of "psychological warfare", "plundering Iran's historic past and insulting its civilization", and depicting Persians as "ugly and violent creatures rather than human beings".

And I always thought Hollywood was simply focused capitalist gain...

Surprised the Telegraph, what I would render as a decent broadsheet newspaper hasn't reported it's source who reportedly condemned this film. Sounds like media stylization to me, one back-alley critic in Iran probably mentioned it, and now everybody must to jump onto the Anti-Western/Pro-Western backlash. To me it says slow news day...
  • jamie
you really should feel stupid all of the time
  • Peter, I think you have a very good explanation there, but did you ever stop to think about how many Iranians did watch US wrestling before assuming that their reasons for banning the movie are ridiculous?

A lot of people form Iran do not watch tv from the US because of how many things the US does that opposes their culture. Then imagine how many people in Iran know all this that you just said?

I can tell you that if you were misrepresenting my country based on something that happened in yours regarding mine I would feel offended too. How would you feel if India makes a movie in which all of the US people are stupid and highly ignorant, and the also burn a couple of US flags?
  • I'm an Iranian who hates the current government, and I can say that they has had a tight history on controlling what people can say even in the times of the Shah, and they torture, imprison, and kill over it. Peter, if you think this is ridiculous, the surface hasn't even been scratched yet.
    fuck iran's gorvernment
  • www.www
    love iranians
  • free man
    hi dear american and iranian
im iranian and all we know that is politic and just a movie
these objection are something belong to peresident ahmadi negad and we not belive that
  • Jahdalkslk
And you dont think that the american press is not government controlled? At least the Iranian press is open about it... :-)
  • Ali
Well, if the star of a film tears your country's flag, would u like that film?
  • Ali
I think this wasn't mean that they consult Iran because it was just a showing on the ring even you can see that Ayatollah tell Ram to finish the game.
But the most Important thing that haven't mentioned is Dr.moeddi Zade who is an Irainian Doctor in the Film and if Darren want to consult Iran I think he wouldn't ever use this character in his film. If you see Dr. Moeddi Zade was the first one who start to survive Ram and get him back to his life. this show that the film want to say Irainian are good people and the breaking of Iran flag and using an Irainian doctor are intentional and just may be mentioned that the government of Iran has problem with USA and it makes the Iran rejected for USA not the Irainian and they are respectful for USA like other human all around the world.
  • bobby
I think the mullacracy was upset because the Ayatollah had the flag emblem on his ass and crotch.
