Blade Director to Remake The Crow

Stephen Norrington has signed on to pen a of the underground comic book turned goth-cult film franchise The Crow. Norrington started out as a model maker and creature effects crew member on such films as Aliens and The Witches. The feature film adaptation of Blade launched his directorial career and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen sent him into a five year hiatus.

Norrington told Variety that the film left him feeling “demoralized by that experience”, and the accomplished sculptor spent the last five years writing and working on his art. He did some illustration work on Blade: Trinity and some creature effects work on Feast. A remake of Clash of the Titans was supposed to be his big return but he was unable to excite Warner Bros with his take on the project.

So why remake The Crow? Norrington says he has a completely new take on the character. While Alex Proyas’ original 1994 film was “gloriously gothic and stylized” Norrington describes his take as “realistic, hard-edged and mysterious, almost documentary-style.” While I’ve never understood the point of a reboot which is too faithful to the original, I’m not sure that dropping The Crow’s goth style is the way to proceed with this reinvention. Wasn’t that largely the whole appeal of Proyas’ film?

The Crow was created by James O’Barr in 1989 and published by Caliber Comics (the trade paperback is still available on Amazon for around $13). The story followed a young rock musician named Eric who is murdered trying to save his fiance Shelly from a gang of street thugs. Eric is shot in the head and paralyzed, unable to help his girlfriend as she is beaten and raped. A year later a crow pecks Eric’s tomb and he is somehow resurrected, and goes on a mission to seek vengeance on the murderers. Alex Proyas’ film is notable for it’s goth style, hard-edged soundtrack and the death of the film’s star Brandon Lee in an on set accident.

Why even do a CROW reboot if you're going to gut it of what made it The Crow? Just do a whole new take on a similar theme. I don't even think the name Crow has that much cache value right now and really if you're intending to distance yourself from the core audience why bother?

If Norrington thought the fallout from LEAGUE was bad, just wait till this Crow comes out.
  • REAL6
Let Brandon Lee's Soul rest man!!!!!

    That's so fucked up!!!

There has been already too much pain on that film. Plus i think the film was perfect.
  • Calzone Jim
    Blade > The Crow
  • not according to rotten tomatoes (and i'd say anyone with half a brain):
86% (the crow) vs. 54% (blade)
  • This does not need to happen.
  • Troy
Why oh Why? Give me a break and write something completly NEW, quit remaking stuff!!
  • Agreed with Aqualeo.

He may be able to get better performances (everyone other than Brandon Lee, Ernie Hudson, and the little girl were beyond atrocious), but he will never be able to top Alex Proyas' visual style.
  • Have to disagree. Michael Wincott was good, and I really think that David Patrick Kelly was brilliant. Angel David was also decent.
  • TCB
Tony Todd did an awesome job in his role as Grange, Top Dollar's lieutenant & private assassin.
  • charles
No, no , no, no no dammit no!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Galdersorg
Have any of you people actually read the comics? I wonder if Norrington has, I doubt it or he wouldn't have come up with that bullshit idea he has. Does James O'Barr get a say so in this?
  • Travis Faulds
It's not like The Crow is the most beloved movies ever...but, it's not that old is it? Maybe I need to watch it again, but I just can't see that movie being out of touch with today's audience. Maybe I'm just old...

In other words, my initial reaction is that a remake at this time seems kinda pointless...
  • Another Horrible remake idea from Hollywood
  • eucarya
IMO, The Crow should have been left as a single film. I found it disrespectful and in bad (money grubbing) taste that they did sequels and spin-offs.

On the subject of Norrington, why no mention of "The Last Minute"? This is Norrington's masterpiece thus far. Amazing filmmaking and I think the only film he's done where he has been able to portray a vision that is uniquely his. Blade and League were good (and I hear Death Machine was also) but they were just "fun movies". The Last Minute was acute filmmaking and an experience. I wish Norrington would pursue something more original for his next film rather than remake a film that should be left untouched.
  • static212
i agree with you there eucarya but the third crow movie was pretty good in terms of following the formula of the first film with the story and tone of the area (setting) anyways I also agree that i am surprised that "The Last Minute" was not even given one mention but then again I believe he only has that wonderful of cinematic art under his belt... but as for the crow reboot or remake I'll say it again don't fix what wasn't and never will be broke.
  • just hope they dont get johny depp to do it, or it will turn into a hot topic wet dream
  • are you fucking kidding me? Another fucking goddamned remake? Get the fuck out.
  • Doug Kinney
"You can't just go around cloning people!?! That's-- That's just crazy!"
  • the crow does need to be rebooted because the last direct to DVD films have been terrible. i dont know if the plans for rebooting the crow are whats best though. it sounds like its going in a completely different direction than the original.
  • B33
    Refuse to acknowledge it.

Which was how I essentially treated the rather lackluster sequels.
  • Come on maaan...
And O'Barr still won't get any loot.
  • marz
c'mon maaaan..another reboot??!!stop recycling and come up with something original.it's not hollywood anymore but copywood!
  • werent there all ready 3 remakes technically
  • Mother is the name for God on the lips and hearts of all children.

I will kill someone if they fuck up this movie...
  • I couldn't be less interested.
  • WTF. IF YOU REMOVE THE GOTH ASPECT THE FILM LOSES ALL OF ITS APPEAL.

WAY TO DISRESPECT BRANDON LEE AND THE ORIGINAL FILM!

    FUCK THIS SHIT.

    Peter Chen has spoken.
  • Thanks... i for one agree...
  • How is this disrespecting Brandon Lee if anything the 3 sequels did.
  • Couldn't agree more.
  • Oi Vey
I'm open minded, but does not need a remake/reboot. Hell, the first one is not even old!

Honestly, I'm so shocked how the studios treated the awful sequels. I mean, I guess they don't mind trampling on Brandon Lee's work.
  • RANT
Now there's a film we don't need and by a director who was looking like he was doing the world a favour and just fading away quietly. Documentary style? Piss off. The Goth thing is the whole heart of the film. Otherwise he just looks daft. ........and a little like the joker,.............who somehow managed to get away with it recently. People don't flal for things like that twice.

Seriously, it's not going to get any better than the original and that's not that old.

Anyway, I'm with those above. Just didn't care at ALL to watch the sequels cos it was over at the end. This is no different. Zack Efron- step up and become an action hero! Crow - the high school years.................with tweeny songs

My free flowing , thoughtless Rant is now over.
  • Crow the High School Years sounds interesting.

Wonder if they'll put in a prom as well??..sheesh.
  • Never saw either film so I don't really care. I heard Blade sucked though.
  • Meh...The Crow wasn't the best movie ever, but I FUCKING LOVED THE ORIGINAL...so even if this one is better, it will never be my favorite...It will be just like the past 3 attempts at the 'Crow' for me...
  • Jesus, well if they are going to remake The Hulk less than 6 years after it came out then I guess this is to be expected. What's next? Remaking Batman Begins?
  • Weyland_Yutani
Aren't they already discussing a reboot -reboot of Superman?
  • The Wolven One
Dude. the Hulk that came out a few years back NEEDED to be canned. plain and simple, IT SUCKED. The most recent Hulk movie definately put my faith back into that story.
Now..Batman Begins, anyone touches the batman franchise again in an attempt of a "Remake" I most DEFINATELY will murder someone. I have to agre with a lot of what some of the people are saying. The Original "The Crow" movie does not. I repeat. DOES. NOT. need to be redone.
1: it was the last work. FANTASTIC WORK, of a brilliant actor
2: Some of you may see faults, I see inspirations from what culture was back then and appreciate it cause of such.

I saw the damn "The Crow: Wicked Prayers, and I barely remember City of Angels but I remember it was definately hit or miss in a LOT of areas for me. The way I see it?
Label the damn thing as a sequel if you gotta. but do NOT touch the Original! this Franchise already has SO many fuck-ups or it's belt. you try to "go back and rewrite" the whole damn thing and you're gonna make even more people EXTREMELY pissed off.
  • Way to go, remove the goth element from The Crow. That's fucking hilarious. Why not remove the robot element from Transformers while you're at it, or the shark elements from Jaws. AND, what the fuck is 'almost documentary-style'?? It either IS or it ISN'T documentary style. This guys is fucking clueless. Yeah, I'm mad.
  • Norrington describes his take as “realistic, hard-edged and mysterious, almost documentary-style.”

That doesn't say anything about removing the goth element.
  • John_Lenin
I know I've been waiting for a realistic take on a story of a man coming back from the dead to avenge his, and his wife's, murder.
  • With all its plot flaws, The Crow shouldn't be remade or rebooted. They should continue what both the movie AND the comics have been doing... different interpretations of The Crow myth, but this time with a stronger emphasis on plot and character development so it's not just another revenge flick.
  • Solution.45
How can you take the "goth" aspect out of THE CROW. The movie is fucking great! if you take the goth part out of the movie it's just pointless. why don't you just take out the psycho part out of the joker why your at it. i think the movie is only 14 years old anyways not need to remake or reboot. If the remake this movie i'm going to fly to that dudes house and bitch slap the fuck out of him. he should just make a 4th one if he wants to make up a new story! WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH SOME PEOPLE?
  • Jackson
If you all thought the sequels were bad and disrespectful, be glad you didn't see the awful TV show. They used the Eric Draven Character and had him going on wacky adventures. He needed to save the loft he and Shelly lived it so he got a job bar tending...I wish I was kidding!

As for another Crow movie, let Robert Rodregez do a shot for shot adaptation of the graphic novel shot like Sin City was. While he was alive Brandon Lee wanted to movie shot in Black and White and I think that would be kina cool.
  • Hey, the fighting was badass and the guy who played Eric Draven was also a very good choice, im opinion, the second best The Crow i have seen. They even took the time to tell why Eric Draven can fight, for me it was a pretty good series. But then again, i didn't see it in a long time.
  • Weyland_Yutani
People will do anything to be/remain "relevant" and paid in Hollywood. Sad, but true.

This guy should get together with that creative genius that wants to do a Blade Runner sequel. They sound perfect for each other.
  • I'm not even sure if I should see the original. That said, hell if I'm going to see this. Norrington sounds like he's talking out of the dictionary of filmmaking cliches of the 00's. Seriously if I hear one more person say "documentary-style" I think...ah fuck, just dont say it anymore please.
  • see it. it's great.
  • better than another shitty sequel.
  • edx
this could be good. the crow was good.. but its fans are a bunch of cutters and cure lovers.
  • static212
excuse me..... edx the story of the crow was is what makes it the flipping underground cult cinematic masterpiece, the music has nothing to do with the overall plot of the classic film, plus it still holds up against other comic book movies, if this reboot is greenlit it's just proving that there is no hollywood magic anymore... rebooting a film such as a the crow is disrespect to james o'barr, alex proyas, and it would undermine the incredible acting of Brandon Lee. i don't see how reinventing the plot of a man coming back from the dead by the power of a god to get revenge for the murder of his and his wife, hell I down right hate the idea of a so called "real-life" reboot even happening. hell the original crow, is as close to the graphic novel, but this shit is downright inconsiderate and not fucking well thought out. If this does happen I will go see it, but I won't be happy about it because you can't go reboot THE CROW because I admit the only crow there will ever be is Brandon Lee.
