A few weeks back, Amazon was offering the Buffy the Vampire complete series collectors set for $70, and I picked it up despite not being a Buffy fan. I have since found the time to only watch 3 episodes. I like what I’ve seen so far, and people tell me it only gets way better. I’ve heard a lot of high praise for the spin-off series Angel. I wish I could clone myself, I would be able to get a lot more done that way. Unfortunately that isn’t possible, and while tempting, I might have to hold off on Amazon’s 24-hour only Gold Box Deal of the day:

Angel - Seasons 1-5 30-Disc DVD Set for Only $50.99, 64% off the retail price.

But I’m sure a lot of you will jump at this opportunity. I still have the Complete series of The Write to catch up on.

Walmart has put the Star Wars Force FX Lightsabers on clearance for only $50, about 60% off the normal $120 retail price. As of this posting, the Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi sabers are the only ones still in stock online. I bet that won’t last long. You might want to check your local store. Master Replicas lost the license to make the Force FX Lightsabers to Hasbro. From what I can tell, the Hasbro lightsabers are identicle to the old Master Replica models.

I can't believe Doctor Who seasons one and two are $50 each. That's so retarded.
  • Peter,

Buffy gets really good in the second and third seasons. It usually hit on all cylinders while the character was in high school. There will be more missteps in the final seasons, but there are still some knockouts, especially in episodes like "Hush" and "The Body" and while many people malign the final season, it's empowerment of Buffy to shirk the traditional method of Slayers vs. Big Bads to beat the Hellmouth (and free her from being in Sunnydale for the rest of her life) is a potent end. Plus, it was always good to see Angel occasionally pop into Buffy's life and vice versa on the shows, especially when arriving to inflict pain on her lovers. (Some of the cross-over flash back episodes are borderline epic.) I'd be interested to hear your feelings as a newcomer to the series who is also educated in things many things film-y.

Angel lost its way when it started dedicating more time to the overall arc of the season; there are some real gems in the first season, but by the end of the second, things will get convoluted. There are still some stand out arcs and episodes, but new character inclusions and developments really made matters murky. It's been refreshing to read that even the writers felt that they could have handled things better. I remember the difficulty of watching the show forget its identity as the story of a vampire burdened with a soul attempting to find redemption. While the final season got my knickers in a twist (quite often nothing happens and character development slows to a crawl for episodes at a time and Angel is quite often seen in sunlight, which to me totally takes away from part of what his character is), it's still an overall fascinating journey with an ending that leaves you emotionally drained and strangely satisfied.

What's always been great to me about the two series is how even with their occasional problems, the writing overall was so good, and moments within an episode always added up to something great. Even when frustrated, I still couldn't wait for next week's show.

    "Let's go to work."

  • I liked Angel a whole lot more than I did Buffy, which speaks highly of it since I loved Buffy. Things get a little weak during season 4 because Joss had to make up a wwhole new plot at the last minute but Season 5 was awesome.

I think Buffy and later got a bad rap because many people looked at the titles and thought they were for young girls. Quite the opposite. Angel is darker and gets better as the series goes on.

I bought the Angel set. I just finished Buffy Season 6 so I absolutely had to buy Angel so I have something to watch after I finish Buffy.
  • Angel starts off right when he leaves at the beginning of Buffy S4. You won't be disappointed, I honestly prefer Angel overall to Buffy ;)
  • That Angel box set looks great. Might find its way into my wife's Christmas stocking.
