The Brothers Bloom Moved to Summer

A bit of disappointing news. Summit Entertainment has decided to delay the release of Brick director Rian Johnson’s acclaimed con adventure film The Brothers Bloom from early January to May 15th 2009 in select markets, and May 29th wide.

Moving the film to film to late May shows confidence in the film, but putting it out on May 29th up against Up, which looks to be Pixar’s most adult film to date, might not be the best idea in the world.

Academy Award winner® Rachel Weisz (The Constant Gardener), Academy Award® winner Adrien Brody (The Pianist), Mark Ruffalo (Zodiac), and Academy Award® nominee Rinko Kikuchi (Babel) star in The Brothers Bloom, a globe-trotting comedy about the last great adventure of the world’s two best con men.

Welcome to the world of The Brothers Bloom, where deception is an art and nothing is as it seems. The brothers have perfected their craft through years of fraternal teamwork. Now they’ve decided to take on one last spectacular job—luring a beautiful and eccentric heiress into an elaborate plot that takes them around the world.

For as long as they can remember, the Brothers Bloom have had only each other to depend on. From their childhood in a long series of gloomy foster homes to their highflying lives as international con artists, Stephen (Mark Ruffalo) and Bloom (Adrien Brody) have shared everything. Stephen brilliantly concocts intricate stories that the brothers live out, but he’s still searching for the perfect con, the one where “everyone gets what they want.” Meanwhile, Bloom yearns for “an unwritten life”—a real adventure, one not dreamed up by his older brother.

Eager to retire, Bloom agrees to take part in one last grand scam. He insinuates himself into the life of Penelope (Rachel Weisz), a bored, single New Jersey heiress. When a genuine romance begins to blossom between them, he is reluctant to exploit her naiveté, but Penelope has already taken the bait: She impulsively joins Bloom, Stephen and their “associate,” a sexy Japanese explosives expert named Bang Bang (Rinko Kikuchi), on an ocean liner to Greece. Penelope is convinced she’s happened upon the adventure of a lifetime and offers to bankroll a million dollar deal. As the quartet makes
its way from Athens to Prague to Mexico to St. Petersburg, Penelope quickly becomes addicted to the illicit thrills. But as Stephen’s elaborate web of deceit pulls tighter, Bloom begins to wonder if his brother has devised the most dangerous con of his life.

  • Aww man.

what is with Adrien Brody? The man cannot get a film released. "Manolete" has been on the shelf for three years, who knows when Splice will come out, and now The Brothers Bloom. The man won a fucking Oscar? Why can't he get a film released. While I'm on the subject, why doesn't someone in the entertainment community ask what is up with "Manolete".
  • That's because he sucks.
  • scorchedgoat
dammit...i really want to see this

This is a bad move in terms of release date.

Don't expect it to pull that far ahead in the box office.
  • this blows. hopefully it will be worth the wait.
  • Brian Rodden
Very bad news. Brick is a great movie and I'm this is gonna be good too. Rian Johnson has a lot of talent. He's gonna be a great filmmaker.
  • I hope it is good. I am looking forward to it, currently.

Huge fan of Brick. Huge fan of Brody. I cannot wait to see this. The main problem here is probably Summit. They are terrible.

What a wonderful bit of fun and I am sure it is worth the wait! Looks like a relationship/romance like in Will Smith's "Hitch">>> i smile just thinking about them both. I can wait for something good....
  • I think this news is linked to the death of Ruffalo's brother...
  • Not interested
  • ARGH! I was dying to see this, it was suppose to come out in October!
  • Curse you, Summit!

I want to see this movie ASAP!
  • Does anyone think this may have something to do with Ruffalo promoting the film, and not being able to do so this soon with the death of his brother and all?
  • I love a good con adventure, shame we have to wait a little longer for this. And, as mentioned in the post, I hope it doesn't get buried too hard at the box office.
  • holy snaps. I saw this film at the Mill Valley Film Festival and It's fantastic. Great follow-up to BRICK. It's super fun, witty, and great performances from the whole cast.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and suggestion that maybe Summit is giving Mr. Ruffalo some time to clear his head before sending him out galavanting around the globe on a press tour. Is it possible that studio heads have feelings too?
  • Absolutely. I'm glad they postponed it for him. I feel terrible for him and his family.
  • Hadn't even crossed my mind, as studios are all money-hungry. But that is a good point. I hope he takes the time off he needs.
  • Dont be silly! but i see your point on ruffalo...
  • Awww I was looking forward to seeing this soon.
  • I'm looking forward to it, but I don't think it has a chance against a Pixar movie.
