Majel Barrett-Roddenberry in Star Trek

Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, the widow of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, will reprise her role as the voice of the Starship Enterprise computer in JJ AbramsStar Trek. A classy move. Majel Barrett has appeared in every incarnation of the popular science fiction series and is sometimes referred to as “the First Lady of Star Trek”. In addition to appearing on screen in various different capacities, Majel also provided the voice of starship onboard computers for The Original Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Enterprise, most of the Star Trek films and computer games.

  • This is really cool
  • So awesome!
  • Wow! I had no idea she was the voice. Come to think of it, she has a really nice voice.
  • zero1
This is a great way to have another common thread through the continuity.
  • Classy move by JJ, it wouldn't be the same without Barrett's computer voice.

Does anyone know if Nurse Chapel (the part Barrett played in the original series) will appear in the new Trek? Obviously, Barrett couldn't play her, but that would be a sweet throwback as well.
  • Indeed a classy move. I'm not sure, but i always wanted Nurse Chapel's thing for Spock to be explored a little more.
  • I'm glad she's just the voice, her character as Troi's mother was the most annoying Star trek character there was.
  • Awesome, it wouldn't be the same without the sound of her voice.

Good news. Glad they are including her.
  • I was just thinking about this the other day. Awesome that she's being used once again. As a (non-rabid) fan, this is kind of heartwarming. >_>
  • Finally, some news even a fan boy can love. This should hold them off from mass suicide for t least a couple more days. Before the next trailer.
  • I'm a Trek fan, and I have to give JJ props for that. I'm on the fence but I'll still go see it come May.
  • Man, why do fan boys get so bent out of shape about the little things, can you imagine if the internet was around when The Next Generation came on and the Captain was wearing red and the nobodies that got killed were wearing gold? shit would have hit the fan, that show would have never lasted 5 episodes and look what they would have lost out on, 7 years of entertainment. So please Trekkers, just sit back and enjoy the movie and don't worry about the little inconsistencies that no doubt will be all through this movie
  • I'm not a Star Trek fan, but I know enough to understand and agree this is indeed a classy move by JJ. I don't think it adds any promise to the film, though.

nice move jj..nice move. be nice if gene's pic could be somehow placed in there..even as an easter egg and you know jj loves putting easter eggs into his films.i'l be there opening day..well maybe a few days after opening day.gota let the crowds die down first.
  • I had no idea that the computer's voice was produced by the same actress.

It's a nice little nod to the fans.

Sad to report, Barrett died December 18, 2008 as a result of complications from leukemia.
