Yes, another Dark Knight news posting — but this time it’s not just another crazy third film rumor or “Christopher Nolan is still considering a Dark Knight sequel” update.

In November, the Executive Committee of the Academy of Motion Pictures music branch ruled that the score for The Dark Knight was disqualified due to a technicality — five names were listed as composers on the music cue sheet for royalty reasons (Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard and three other individuals — music editor Alex Gibson, ambient music designer Mel Wesson and composer Lorne Balfe).

But now the Los Angeles Times is reporting (and Variety has since confirmed) that the Motion Picture Academy may have reversed its decision, and Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard will now be allowed to compete in the Best Original Score category. The Academy’s executive director Bruce Davis was quoted last week defending his decision saying that he “sees this as an award, like cinematography or directing, where you want to award a single creator.” But it appears the music branch had another vote on Friday about the decision, and concluded that the score should be eligible for an award nomination.

The Dark Knight Soundtrack is still available for $12.99 on Amazon, but Warner Bros music is also releasing a two-CD special edition (now available for preorder for $45.49 on Amazon), which includes four bonus remix tracks and an 40 page hardbound book.

Thanks to /Film reader Zinc for the tip.

I just emailed this to you a few minutes ago, sorry if you already knew :)
  • Good news.

It wasn't until I heard the score on it's own that I truly realised how great it was. Jokers theme in particular was especially haunting and the first track built up so brilliantly.

If this story turns out to be true, it'd be a very good thing as it would be a very strong contender.

    @ peter

please please please ignore all the people who complain about the frequent TDK stories.
    (1) first off, there really aren't that many stories in the scope of everything /film offers.
    (2) tons of your readers are still very swept up by this film. it was more than just 2 hours+ in a theater. that year & a half leading up to the film's release is something i'll never forget - all the marketing games, and the rumors, and photos from the chicago streets at night, etc...were fun as hell, and truly made this film a unique experience.
    (3) some people post with only one goal in mind: bitching. as sad as that sounds, it's 100% true. they scour film sites with their minds already made up about everything, and love nothing more than to add negativity to the mix.
    (4) the continued interest is proof of how special this film really is.

i'm not trying to tell you how to do your job, i just think there's alot of people like me who still really look forward to news about gotham city.

Yea, ditto. I'm pretty sure a lot of folks found this site because of the Kevin Smith TDK podcast.

Also, great news about the soundtrack.
  • Great news! I really hope this turns out, I especially enjoyed the soundtrack and hope it gets the award, but at least getting the nomination is very well deserved I believe.

Well, good for them (if they reverse their stupid decision, that is)
  • Zinc
I actually sent him this because I thought it was important news. There was a pretty big shock when it was announced that the score was ineligible. Reporting that it may be eligible again is something that is noteworthy enough to be posted.

Now if they reverse the DQ of Jonny Greenwood's TWBB score...
  • Honestly, I don't think reversing a decision is right. I know this is the Dark Knight we're talking about, but rules are rules. We can't just change them for certain movies.
  • The music is such a part of TDK that it needs to at least be considered for a nom.

sees this as an award, like cinematography or directing, where you want to award a single creator.”
what about the coen bros. at the recent academy awards?
what fucking hypocrites. i can't think of anything more ridiculous.

"you want to award a single creator.”
    um.....the coen brothers...

Most every aspect of filmmaking is a collaborative effort. It's silly that the rule being recinded exists in the first place. It would be a shame if future collaborations among composers wouldn't be considered in the future. That said, I'm actuallly surprised the score works as well as it does with two different guys working it through.

While it is a good decision, you have to wonder if certain buttons aren't being pushed behind the scenes to help restore a wider audience for the Academy Awards.

Anyone interested in film sound design should really make an effort to see an IMAX presentation of TDK just to listen to what was being done with the sound and music.
  • I'm sure the extra attention this is getting around voting season is a bonus...
  • Maybe they should have been different in the first place.
  • YoungZer0's right, it's a bad rule to begin with. Movies should be able to be nominated regardless of how many are involved, be it one or twenty.

Someone once said the Academy likes to only award one person because the statues are so expensive... if that's the case, how about using only 5 pounds of bronze instead of 10? Common sense FTW!
  • Not to mention Best Picture winners, which goes to the movie's producers... nowadays, your average movie has like 4-5 producers...
  • I hope that Zimmer/Howard could be nominated. I think the Academy has been on my bad side for awhile. I wanted to disown them when I heard that they are disqualifying the score.

I guess that they would reverse their decisions. I wonder. Would they have done the same thing when the score to "There Will Be Blood" was disqualified?
  • i am very happy to hear this news. the score is so good i think it should at least get a nomination.
  • They only like rewarding teams of directors only if their is ample proof that both were involved in the process. I think the DGA also has a problem with duo directors in the grand scheme of things.
  • This is a step in the right direction for sure.

Could a Dark Knight be getting poised for a mini-sweep?
  • Great news...I just saw TDK again and realized how the score really helped the movie be so great, especially in the theater...I hope TDK wins everything it is nominated for, just cause it was the shit...
  • The TDK score definitely deserves an Oscar. "Why So Serious" and "Introduce A Little Anarchy" are fantastic songs and the movie wouldn't have been as good without them.
  • optimusprime
Good news. At least we got a nomination, but it would be even better if TDK gets the award. The score was the best and "A Dark Knight" in my opinion is best soundtrack in the CD.
