Nikki Finke over at DeadlineHollywoodDaily is reporting that Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke has been removed from the Twilight franchise. Finke’s contacts report that Hardwicke was “difficult” and “irrational” during the making of the film. One contact also explains that “Summit didn’t like her. They’re saying the [director of photography] Elliot Davis is the one responsible for the film’s sumptuous visual look, that the editor Nancy Richardson had to save the film in post-production, and Summit thought Hardwicke’s [CAA] agent Beth Swofford was alternately ineffectual and hysterical.” This is inauspicious news for Hardwicke, as the whole crew is currently on their European press tour. Undoubtedly, there will be some painfully awkward Q&A sessions beginning tomorrow, as I’m sure this will be the first question on journalists’ minds.

After Hardwicke’s Twilight hit theaters and made almost $70 million in its first weekend (more than Quantum of Solace!), many were quick to point out that Hardwicke had set a new box office record for a female director in Hollywood, previously held by Mimi Leder’s Deep Impact ($41 million way back in 1998). Financial success and a throng of devoted fans made Hardwicke a de facto role model for young women who hoped to one day themselves make it behind the lens of a camera. In interviews, Hardwicke related:

It’s so cool…What I hope it means is — that almost every time I talk to the fans there are some [women] who want to be directors and want to be writers — this will encourage people to say, ‘Hey man, if she can do it, I can do it.’

I thought Twilight was very poorly made. The script was weak, the actors weren’t well directed, and the movie looked cheap, overall. Despite all this, I’m still a fan of Ms. Hardwicke, and admire the doors she has, and will continue to break down in Hollywood. With Hardwicke now off the franchise, Finke predicts that the situation “could blow up into a scandal for Summit if it chooses a male director over Hardwicke.” I’m not sure about that, but the timing of this announcement certainly seems like a public shaming that doesn’t seem worthy of the person that just delivered Summit Entertainment of their biggest box office successes of the year.

Update: Summit Entertainment just released the following press release on Sunday night at 5:40pm:

SUMMIT BEGINS SEARCH FOR NEW MOON DIRECTOR

Los Angeles, CA, December 7, 2008 – Summit Entertainment and director Catherine Hardwicke jointly announced today that the filmmaker will not be directing the next installment in the newly minted TWILIGHT film franchise. Summit’s targeted end of 2009 or early 2010 release of the film, NEW MOON, does not work with Ms. Hardwicke’s required prep time to bring her vision of the film to the big screen. Thus as has been done before with many successful film franchises, the studio will employ a new director for NEW MOON.

“I am sorry that due to timing I will not have the opportunity to direct NEW MOON,” said Hardwicke. “Directing TWILIGHT has been one of the great experiences of my life, and I am grateful to the fans for their passionate support of the film. I wish everyone at Summit the best with the sequel– it is a great story.”

“Catherine did an incredible job in helping us to launch the TWILIGHT franchise and we thank her for all of her efforts and we very much hope to work with her on future Summit projects,” said Erik Feig, Summit’s President of Production. “We as a studio have a mandate to bring the next installment in the franchise to the big screen in a timely fashion so that fans can get more of Edward, Bella and all of the characters that Stephenie Meyer has created. We are able to pursue an aggressive time frame as we have the luxury of only adapting the novels into screenplays as opposed to having to create a storyline from scratch.”

  • U people need to get a life well all the people who think Twilight was "Shitty"

It was a good movie, the book was better but it was still good. Nick u sound like an ass. Why don't u go fuck yourself and quit telling other people too fuck themselves.

God man!!!! U people are so idiotic.

I was only disappointed with Twilight because it was vastly different from the book.
I was confused because in the hospital scene after Edward saves Bella from the car crash he is supossed to visit her in hospital but instead it is her father?!!

The snowball fight would have been awesom if they could have shot that aswell. When you hear Bella exclaim her disdain for cold wet things - If you have not read the book you think "Where the hell is the relevance to the phrase?"

I did enjoy the film but maybe it could have been a litle truer to the book.

I kind of got the impression the film was re-written the way the director and film company thought he book ought to have been written, so they kind of twisted the story to make it their own rather than honour Stephenie Meyer's hard work and writing the book.

Maybe they just had things going against them - difficult filming conditions, low budget, short on time.....

Oh well here's hoping New Moon is a better attempt at re-living Bella and Edward's love for one another.
  • U people make me laugh, I just love reading ur comments! haha XO

It doesnt matter who directs the films. If summit won't fund the project and they insist on rushing the making of the films, all the films will be sub-par at best, but they'll all make money. twilight has already made enough money to fund all the sequels if they don't increase the budgets for any of the films...the studio seems more interested in making money than in producing an less-than-crappy film. so why not go ahead and sell us the shitty stuff for the same price of something that's not shitty? we'll buy it.
  • To be honest I would be willing to give the sequel a chance as long as it doesn't look like total crap. Twilight from the get go looked like a bad movie, and the few things that looked good weren't things that could be attributed solely to the director. A change of director is an excellent idea. However, rushing the poor thing is most likely just going to make things worse. The werewolf effects in New Moon will most likely take a considerable amount of post production time to make work properly. Without that time... well, it won't be pretty.
  • I suggest they also find better source material.
  • Greggory
Well I guess that means Catherine Hardwicke can go back to making movies that look worth watching.

"Elliot Davis is the one responsible for the film’s sumptuous visual look"

Interesting thing to mention considering that half the closeups were out of focus.
  • I wonder whose choice it was to apply those tracer effects to the people whenever they did something extra-vampirery? It made it look like a mid 90's made-for-tv movie.
  • Yea! i am so excited more Twilight news...
  • I think it is pretty shitty that they did this while she's currently over seas doing promotional work for their film. Having said that, though, I'm not upset they removed her. I think another director with more experience would do these films better justice. Joss Whedon would be my dream choice (he can work his magic from Buffy, Angel, Firefly, and Serenity!) but just someone who can edit a film a bit better and not make it look like it was half hazardly thrown together would be nice.
  • Twilight 2 is going to be the Chronicles of Riddick of its franchise.
  • I can't believe it! is this official?!?!
  • Thank God she's gone. Fingers crossed they get someone that is really worth it this time around.
  • Wendilynn
My concern is not changing directors, but the budget. Catherine said in several interviews that Summit wasn't sold on New Moon needing a decent budget and that she was fighting for a bigger budget. Clearly they think they can make New Moon as cheaply as they did Twilight and still keep their franchise. So, we get a rushed, poorly made sequel when fans poured money into Twilight so the second movie would get a real budget. Nice way to bite the hands that fed you Summit.
  • thanks god. a chipmunk would direct better
  • Chimaera
Wow, praying really does work! Now, like before mentioned, all they need is a new screen writer to write up the script and they might be in business. This movie [Twilight] was a novelty that wore off quick once it was actually seen. I wonder who they can afford to get to direct the next one...hopefully someone experienced but I won't hold my breath.
  • TheLM
    Davis knows his stuff.
  • Odd name for a woman.
  • Now that they will get more money for the sequel, they can go out looking for a better director.
  • No that they will get more money for the sequel, they can go out looking for a better director.
  • Wow, I am shocked and do agree it's a bad time to make such an announcement. I wonder if Summit merely wants to churn out another mediocre movie instead of taking some extra time and money to improve on the next film. A recent interview with Hardwicke gave me the impression that she wanted to take her time with New Moon. Then you have speculation from both Rob and Kristen in different interviews that filming will start in March. To me that feels a little soon especially without a screenplay. I'm not disappointed Hardwicke has been replaced because I don't think she turned out to be a proper fit for Twilight, but who's to say the next person will be any better? I would really like to see them replace the screenwriter. I feel it would benefit the next movie not to have the author and fan opinion so involved. Some dialogue may work in the book, but holy crap, a lot of lines simply didn't translate. As a director Hardwicke should have had better judgement.
  • wow the film gods listened to us. Now they just need to kill the series and all will be well.
  • Nick
Yes because given my name, I'm obviously a woman.
  • hahah TRUE STORY!!
  • Weyland_Yutani
Female or not, this story looks like the outcome of a "bigger dick pissing match." I'm guessing there was an argument several months ago and someone involved is following through with a slammed -door-promise.
  • Oi Vey
I had no idea taht Catherine was considered 'difficult'.
  • LOL Be cool, be cool! Its called a joke man come on
  • Her mistake was taking Twilight and trying to make a good movie...
  • See.
  • Kate
I have to say that I really enjoyed the Twilight series. Were they the best written books, not neccessarily, but did they captivate the imagintion YES!. The film on the other hand was a travesty in every way. The direction was abysmal, the script was weak, the depth of emotion that you couldn't get away from in the books isn't even semi-present, and some of the actors left a lot to be desired. I sincerely hope that with the decision to employ a new director that the next film will meet up to it's potential and be a much more inspired adaptation instead of a rush job to make a buck at the box office.
  • Nick
    And fuck you both too.
  • Nick
    Go fuck yourself.
  • Oh thank god! There may be hope for the next movie after all! Please say this means no more shitty wire work and cringe-worthy special effects!

That does suck for her though. They could have at least waited at little while to announce it until after all the promotional stuff for Twilight was done. It sucks to be her right now.
  • I agree the timing is awful... I doubt very much that the backlash that might occur will lead to less people seeing it in the theaters.... They'll go no matter who does it.
  • I agree.. and a new screenplay author as well!

    SOMEONE PLEASE CALL JOSS WHEDON!
  • hahaha you obviously haven't read New Moon... it's got werewolves and a hinted-at fight between those werewolves and a vampire (though I'm sure they'll add that to the movie to give it some action) but no decapitations or blood... and judging that most of the viewers of Twilight were young females, I doubt they will add those things in :-)
  • Jack was great! Whatchutalkinbout!?
  • They should get fuckin' Lexi Alexander to make the next one. The same problems will still probably remain, but there will at least be an enjoyable amount of decapitations and hurricanes of blood.
  • Silver
I love Catherine for adding Rob's music to the movie, and maybe even for the casting of him. For that I am eternally grateful. She brought great enthusiasm to the Twilight promo experience. Heart her! But I'm kinda glad as bad as that sounds. She has GREAT actors, she really needed to redirect several scenes better. THEN NEED A NEW SCREENPLAY WRITER! That's the one that needs to get fired.

Get a badass director for New Moon! It will be EPIC.
  • BassMastaMike
    Pssshh..... women..
  • carg0
if true, the timing of this couldn't be any more shamefully inappropriate. for christ's sake, the movie just came out plus they're still doing press tours...

Hardwicke's being railroaded and Summit Entertainment deserves whatever backlash they incur.
  • PETER CHEN ATAAAAAAAAACK.

Peter Chen hopes that Michael Bay will be attached.
  • I'm glad they pulled her from the franchise. She had a great story to work with and failed to really put it on the big screen properly. Hardwicke made some bad decisions (ie the wire work stunts) and shouldn't be let near the sequels.
  • LOL AHHAHAHAHAH... thats what I thought
  • Burt Nelson
13 was great and Lords of Dogtown was passable with some good performances. If she was so difficult why didn't they just replace her with the DP who was so responsible for the look of the film which wasn't anything special anyway. Looks to me liek they're trying to get out of giving her a raise.
  • Emm
Twilight could of been up for seriously best comedy that wasn't suppose to be one. Seriously, this news makes me so happy. The directing of this film was horrific, and totally butchered the book on so many levels. Haha i can't wait for the backlash of the tiny twilight fans, I hope Summit sticks to this decision. Its a good one, there's still hope left.

That being said, backlash won't do anything. Twilight fans are pretty dedicated, so they will watch it no matter what happens.
  • Twilight is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. It's worrying that they are going to bring in a new director and probably try to make the sequel into a decent movie instead of continuing on the trajectory of RIDICULOUS (ly awesome). Yeah, very worrying. I was depending on this series to one-up the unintentioanl hilarity with every installment.

Also, when I listened to the Slashfilm cast I was really surprised that there wasn't emphasis on how hilarious it is. I tell EVERYONE to see it. For vampire baseball alone.
  • ...And it begins. I've been saying from the outset that we don't need to worry, that as this film franchise chugs along it will slowly begin to crumble all on its own.

By the by, show me ONE tween who went to see Twilight and could actually tell you who directed it. I doubt it.
