Nikki Finke over at DeadlineHollywoodDaily is reporting that Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke has been removed from the Twilight franchise. Finke’s contacts report that Hardwicke was “difficult” and “irrational” during the making of the film. One contact also explains that “Summit didn’t like her. They’re saying the [director of photography] Elliot Davis is the one responsible for the film’s sumptuous visual look, that the editor Nancy Richardson had to save the film in post-production, and Summit thought Hardwicke’s [CAA] agent Beth Swofford was alternately ineffectual and hysterical.” This is inauspicious news for Hardwicke, as the whole crew is currently on their European press tour. Undoubtedly, there will be some painfully awkward Q&A sessions beginning tomorrow, as I’m sure this will be the first question on journalists’ minds.

After Hardwicke’s Twilight hit theaters and made almost $70 million in its first weekend (more than Quantum of Solace!), many were quick to point out that Hardwicke had set a new box office record for a female director in Hollywood, previously held by Mimi Leder’s Deep Impact ($41 million way back in 1998). Financial success and a throng of devoted fans made Hardwicke a de facto role model for young women who hoped to one day themselves make it behind the lens of a camera. In interviews, Hardwicke related:

It’s so cool…What I hope it means is — that almost every time I talk to the fans there are some [women] who want to be directors and want to be writers — this will encourage people to say, ‘Hey man, if she can do it, I can do it.’

I thought Twilight was very poorly made. The script was weak, the actors weren’t well directed, and the movie looked cheap, overall. Despite all this, I’m still a fan of Ms. Hardwicke, and admire the doors she has, and will continue to break down in Hollywood. With Hardwicke now off the franchise, Finke predicts that the situation “could blow up into a scandal for Summit if it chooses a male director over Hardwicke.” I’m not sure about that, but the timing of this announcement certainly seems like a public shaming that doesn’t seem worthy of the person that just delivered Summit Entertainment of their biggest box office successes of the year.

Update: Summit Entertainment just released the following press release on Sunday night at 5:40pm:

SUMMIT BEGINS SEARCH FOR NEW MOON DIRECTOR

Los Angeles, CA, December 7, 2008 – Summit Entertainment and director Catherine Hardwicke jointly announced today that the filmmaker will not be directing the next installment in the newly minted TWILIGHT film franchise. Summit’s targeted end of 2009 or early 2010 release of the film, NEW MOON, does not work with Ms. Hardwicke’s required prep time to bring her vision of the film to the big screen. Thus as has been done before with many successful film franchises, the studio will employ a new director for NEW MOON.

“I am sorry that due to timing I will not have the opportunity to direct NEW MOON,” said Hardwicke. “Directing TWILIGHT has been one of the great experiences of my life, and I am grateful to the fans for their passionate support of the film. I wish everyone at Summit the best with the sequel– it is a great story.”

“Catherine did an incredible job in helping us to launch the TWILIGHT franchise and we thank her for all of her efforts and we very much hope to work with her on future Summit projects,” said Erik Feig, Summit’s President of Production. “We as a studio have a mandate to bring the next installment in the franchise to the big screen in a timely fashion so that fans can get more of Edward, Bella and all of the characters that Stephenie Meyer has created. We are able to pursue an aggressive time frame as we have the luxury of only adapting the novels into screenplays as opposed to having to create a storyline from scratch.”

  • Not like she was responsible in any way, shape or form for the success of that movie.
  • hey dave, how can you be a fan of hardwicke's if you said, "The script was weak, the actors weren’t well directed, and the movie looked cheap, overall. "?
  • Amanda
I agree 100% with pulling her from the franchise. Everything that was said about her, stylistically, is true. The film could have been exponentially better. In addition to that, the only reason that she became the most-selling female director has nothing whatsoever to do with the fact that SHE was the director. It had to do with Twilight itself. She cannot take credit for the fact that it did well. Everyone knew it looked cheesy and that is her fault. The only reason we all saw it was in support of Twilight itself and NOT her.
  • Exactly. They could have put anyone "behind the lens" and it would have been just as successful. Stephanie Meyer is to blame for the success, not Hardwicke. Seems like sort of a cheap shot at #1 female director to me.
  • Christopher M
I really hope they end up making a movie "non-fans" will enjoy with the sequel...I love vampire movies but this first one looked abysmally bad...I also agree that should make for an interesting press conference
  • Christopher M
Dave meant her previous work such as the movie "Thirteen"
  • Thanks Christopher. Yes, of course that is what I meant.
  • My biggest complaint was the direction. I went in without any knowledge of the book, not trying to understand the hype, just hoping to absorb artwork. Instead I got this hackneyed music video bullshit... I knew it was the direction, and this decision kind of confirms that.

This series has a lot of potential in the hands of someone capable. Obviously Joss Whedon comes to mind when I think of who should helm it but in a really odd, random choice, I would really love Ben Affleck to direct. Gone Baby Gone had just the right amount of 'eek factor' and I loved his style. When you barely notice there's a director, that might be the best job a director can do.
  • She's also directed other movies, like Thirteen. Even the most talented directors are capable of making shitty films. Francis Ford Coppola made Jack, remember?
  • This is outrageous. The movie was a masterpiece.

But seriously, the books suck so logically NO director can save them.
  • her other two movies also kind of sucked. nativity story and lords of dogtown? no thanks. so that's one out of 4, so far.....
  • A female difficult and irrational? Who'da thunk it?
  • Mira
Honestly, if you look deeper into the books, they're quite horrible. On the outside, they're fun guilty pleasures, and that's what all these people love.
I don't know how they could have made this movie any less cheesy... they're just going with what the material gave them.
  • I wonder if she would have been treated in the same way if she was not a woman?

really, actually wondering, not making a statement. Because while I think removing her from the series might be acceptable given the problems with the movie (after all, regardless of who is at fault, even if it is NOT her, she is still responsible for her team) the manner is which she is being unceremoniously dumped while the film is still in a box office boom stage is pretty striking.

Especially considering, (as many have said) that Twilight is a win despite it all.
  • I still think Hardwicke is a good director (but I haven't seen Twilight). It could be a fluke or the project itself could have been a disaster. I mean, this should be big tentpole stuff for Universal, not a breakout film for a no-name studio like Summit. I think if a big studio had taken on the project, spent more money and time shooting and producing it, it probably wouldn't be the atrocity it is today.
  • a woman being difficult and irrational?!

    WAAAAAAA?!
  • I feel bad for her. No one should be shamed in public like that. They could have at least waited till the film made more bank and was in the time between cinema and dvd release and then stab her in the back.

I bought the book for the wife yesterday and she finished it this morning, I hope the film is as easily digestable, or I'm gonna have an angry woman on my hands.
  • ...And it begins. I've been saying from the outset that we don't need to worry, that as this film franchise shugs along it will slowly begin to crumble all on its own.

By the by, show me ONE tween who went to see Twilight and could actually tell you who directed it. I doubt it.

  • Twilight is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. It's worrying that they are going to bring in a new director and probably try to make the sequel into a decent movie instead of continuing on the trajectory of RIDICULOUS (ly awesome). Yeah, very worrying. I was depending on this series to one-up the unintentioanl hilarity with every installment.

Also, when I listened to the Slashfilm cast I was really surprised that there wasn't emphasis on how hilarious it is. I tell EVERYONE to see it. For vampire baseball alone.
  • Emm
Twilight could of been up for seriously best comedy that wasn't suppose to be one. Seriously, this news makes me so happy. The directing of this film was horrific, and totally butchered the book on so many levels. Haha i can't wait for the backlash of the tiny twilight fans, I hope Summit sticks to this decision. Its a good one, there's still hope left.

That being said, backlash won't do anything. Twilight fans are pretty dedicated, so they will watch it no matter what happens.
  • Burt Nelson
13 was great and Lords of Dogtown was passable with some good performances. If she was so difficult why didn't they just replace her with the DP who was so responsible for the look of the film which wasn't anything special anyway. Looks to me liek they're trying to get out of giving her a raise.
  • LOL AHHAHAHAHAH... thats what I thought
  • I'm glad they pulled her from the franchise. She had a great story to work with and failed to really put it on the big screen properly. Hardwicke made some bad decisions (ie the wire work stunts) and shouldn't be let near the sequels.
  • PETER CHEN ATAAAAAAAAACK.

Peter Chen hopes that Michael Bay will be attached.
  • carg0
if true, the timing of this couldn't be any more shamefully inappropriate. for christ's sake, the movie just came out plus they're still doing press tours...

Hardwicke's being railroaded and Summit Entertainment deserves whatever backlash they incur.
  • BassMastaMike
    Pssshh..... women..

I love Catherine for adding Rob's music to the movie, and maybe even for the casting of him. For that I am eternally grateful. She brought great enthusiasm to the Twilight promo experience. Heart her! But I'm kinda glad as bad as that sounds. She has GREAT actors, she really needed to redirect several scenes better. THEN NEED A NEW SCREENPLAY WRITER! That's the one that needs to get fired.

Get a badass director for New Moon! It will be EPIC.
  • They should get fuckin' Lexi Alexander to make the next one. The same problems will still probably remain, but there will at least be an enjoyable amount of decapitations and hurricanes of blood.
  • Jack was great! Whatchutalkinbout!?
  • hahaha you obviously haven't read New Moon... it's got werewolves and a hinted-at fight between those werewolves and a vampire (though I'm sure they'll add that to the movie to give it some action) but no decapitations or blood... and judging that most of the viewers of Twilight were young females, I doubt they will add those things in :-)
  • I agree.. and a new screenplay author as well!

    SOMEONE PLEASE CALL JOSS WHEDON!
  • I agree the timing is awful... I doubt very much that the backlash that might occur will lead to less people seeing it in the theaters.... They'll go no matter who does it.
  • Oh thank god! There may be hope for the next movie after all! Please say this means no more shitty wire work and cringe-worthy special effects!

That does suck for her though. They could have at least waited at little while to announce it until after all the promotional stuff for Twilight was done. It sucks to be her right now.

    Go fuck yourself.
  • Nick
    And fuck you both too.

I have to say that I really enjoyed the Twilight series. Were they the best written books, not neccessarily, but did they captivate the imagintion YES!. The film on the other hand was a travesty in every way. The direction was abysmal, the script was weak, the depth of emotion that you couldn't get away from in the books isn't even semi-present, and some of the actors left a lot to be desired. I sincerely hope that with the decision to employ a new director that the next film will meet up to it's potential and be a much more inspired adaptation instead of a rush job to make a buck at the box office.
  • See.
  • Her mistake was taking Twilight and trying to make a good movie...
  • LOL Be cool, be cool! Its called a joke man come on
  • Oi Vey
I had no idea taht Catherine was considered 'difficult'.
  • Female or not, this story looks like the outcome of a "bigger dick pissing match." I'm guessing there was an argument several months ago and someone involved is following through with a slammed -door-promise.
  • hahah TRUE STORY!!
  • Nick
Yes because given my name, I'm obviously a woman.
  • wow the film gods listened to us. Now they just need to kill the series and all will be well.
  • Wow, I am shocked and do agree it's a bad time to make such an announcement. I wonder if Summit merely wants to churn out another mediocre movie instead of taking some extra time and money to improve on the next film. A recent interview with Hardwicke gave me the impression that she wanted to take her time with New Moon. Then you have speculation from both Rob and Kristen in different interviews that filming will start in March. To me that feels a little soon especially without a screenplay. I'm not disappointed Hardwicke has been replaced because I don't think she turned out to be a proper fit for Twilight, but who's to say the next person will be any better? I would really like to see them replace the screenwriter. I feel it would benefit the next movie not to have the author and fan opinion so involved. Some dialogue may work in the book, but holy crap, a lot of lines simply didn't translate. As a director Hardwicke should have had better judgement.
  • No that they will get more money for the sequel, they can go out looking for a better director.
  • Now that they will get more money for the sequel, they can go out looking for a better director.
  • Odd name for a woman.
