I have fond memories of Sin City. A wildly stylish, over-the-top thrill ride, Sin City prooved that some graphic novels are so tailored to fit the big screen that they can make for great film adaptations, losing almost nothing in the process. Talks of a sequel started up soon after the $40-million-budgeted film made almost double that amount domestically, but with Miller occupied with The Spirit and Rodriguez off on his own adventures, the possibility seemed to fade out of sight. Until now.

IGN recently confirmed with Frank Miller that plans for the film are fully underway. “Sin City 2 is written…It’s mainly a matter of working out the details of the production. I’m hoping to do it with Robert Rodriguez again in the same circumstances that we did the first one, and we could be shooting as soon as April.” Those who followed the first film’s production will know that Miller was heavily involved in the direction of the film (Rodriguez chose to resign from the Director’s Guild, so that Miller could officially be credited as such. Miller was also a producer for the film). On Friday, IESB reported that Rosario Dawson corroborated Miller’s story, and that Dawson would be reprising her role as Gail.

Although the story hasn’t officially reported, Miller has said that the new film will be based on A Dame To Kill For (a prequel to The Hard Goodbye), and will feature stories surrounding Blue Eyes and the Old Town Girls. There will also be and an original story featuring Nancy Callahan (Jessica Alba, in the first film). While I am increasingly apprehensive of Miller’s directorial debut in The Spirit, I still think that Miller and Rodriguez could probably make a great team, and I remain excited for a Sin City sequel. How about you guys?

Update: According to Superherohype, Mickey Rourke, who played Marv in the first film, is currently not interested in starring in the sequel:

No, I’m not interested in that right now. That’s not a reality right now. It’s pissing in the wind. There’s different factions going different directions there. I don’t know. That’s three hours of make up and I’m claustrophobic, so I’m going to have to work something out.

  • I'm looking forward to it, here's hoping Rourke and Willis return in their roles, I enjoyed their characters the most.

I seem to remember Frank Miller running his mouth like this when 300 came out....theres nothing certain until Rodriguez confirms that this is happening....It could be all smoke to get people interested in the Spirit...
  • Hell yeah, they def made the movie better...
  • I actually wondered when I saw the preview for The Spirit if that was the only kind of 'sequel' we were going to get for Sin City. I'm excited to hear there will be an actual sequel!

I'm very excited for Sin City 2 (or anything new by Rodriguez). The first was great and, if the first taught them anything, the second effort should be even better. It's unfortunate, but I fear that The Spirit may leave a bad taste before SC2 even gets started. That remains to be seen, but it is very possible that Miller might have instilled too much of the Sin City style in his work on The Spirit. I think that in this light, at least stylistically, it was a poor choice.
  • Rosario reprising her scantily clad role...Count me in.
  • This better be real. I've heard these rumors for four years now. I'm ready.
  • I hated the first one so vehemently, it changed the way I viewed myself as a fan of Rodriguez. If I ever watch this, I hope the film has what the first one lacked - soul and depth. The only thing I liked in the first film was Carla Guguinos tits...magnificent

Mickey Rourke doesn't really need 3 hours of makeup to look like a hideously malformed beast...does he?
  • Exactly what I was thinking... I will wait for a Rodriguez or studio confirmation before I get too excited.
  • I loved Sin City and am looking forward to finally seeing the sequel. Whenever that may be. Too much longer and I think people will drop off and stop giving a f*ck. Risky business, these sequels.
  • LOL I don't think he does. Also I don't think he wants to do Sin CIty 2 because he is soon to get an oscar nod which means he will want to do more serious things, even though I think it is kind of a slap in the face a little considering that Rourke kind of got a little come back from Sin City but he fucked it up so now he is trying to make sure he doesn't screw up this comeback, but I personally don't see the harm because Sin City was great and I doubt Sin City 2 would hurt his career.

Hate to be the guy who was not a big fan of the first one. I thought the Cinematography was great but the story lines really bored me. I'll still probably check out the next one for the visuals though.

:) second great news of the day! Loved Sin City, especially the art direction, been waiting to hear this for so long.
  • If they stick to the style and feel of the first one (with the script AND cinemetography), it'll be amazing. Otherwise, it'll suck.

Robert Rodriguez is in the middle of making Red Sonja right now. I know he's not officially directing that movie, but he is producing it and is very involved in making it. He said at Comic Con that it wasn't planned on being released until the 4th quarter of 2009. I can't imagine shooting of Sin City 2 will begin in April, unless Miller directs it on his own.
  • I was going to file this under "Entertainment the we will never see."

Didn't Rodriguez state at comic con that he's gotten drafts from Miller before but insinuated that they had creative differences?
  • LOL she would be a good Eva Lord but something tells me Rodriguiz will put the crappy Rose McGowan in the role. Also I think Rachael Weisz would be a good Eva Lord.

When did Rourke ever say he didn't enjoy playing Marv or ever want to reprise the role? I always recalled his experience as being a pretty good one (and critically acclaimed). There was early talk of him getting a Supporting Actor nod for that role. No reason why he wouldn't/shouldn't take on the next installment. Also, The money will be on the table and, even with a statue in hand, that is something that would be hard to turn down.

Sin City was a pretty faithful telling of Miller's comic work. Perhaps, wanting more from a film is understandable, but it certainly wasn't expected. I'm fine with the version they filmed. It's a great looking movie and the performances/casting were perfect. I would argue that Sin City resurrected Rourke's career and made Clive Owen a star.

For sure it will have the same visual effects as the first one. It might be too much already to see the same type of treatment now that The Spirit will be using it as well. :/
  • I would have loved this idea, if it wasn't for The Spirit. I'm afraid that movie will ruin the visual style from now on. Sin City 2 will have to do something new and better.
  • Cinefan
Bruce Willis was and will always be the worst hartigan ever.

GET EASTWOOD DAMMIT! HE'S WHO THE CHARACTER WAS BASED ON!

ROBERT RODRIGUEZ COULDN'T ARTISTICALLY DIRECT OUT OF A PLASTIC BAG!!
  • lpfanaddy
I think the Spirit is going to be a lot more practical set stuff than Sin City so that'll make it somewhat different and Sin City somewhat untainted.
Rourke sounds like a total headcase in that quote.
  • Great news. Sin City was ground breaking.
  • jason B
this is huge! been waiting a loooooooooooong time to hear this.

what an ass rourke sounds like. i know the wrestler is his return to glory, but without rodriguez, i'm not so sure all this happens for him.

It's about time. Really hope something gets worked out with Mickey Rourke, because I thought he was great in the first film. And I'm still holding out hope for Angelina Jolie to play Ava Lord...
  • adamluo
We're talking about Sin City, not Spy Kids.
  • FartFace Magee
I loved Rourke as Marv, but its pretty obnoxious to me that he thinks he is above the role now that The Wrestler is getting Oscar buzz. I'm sure he'll be kicking himself once hes back doing DTV action movies.
  • Luke
Any word on if Machete will be shooting at the same time, as rumored?
  • It's about damn time!
