I was at the downtown San Francisco Best Buy yesterday when I noticed this signage when I walked in the door. Apparently some of the Best Buy stores are doing Midnight launches on Monday night for The Dark Knight DVD/Blu-ray. Apparently some Circuit City, Blockbuster Videos and Virgin Megastores will also be open at midnight for the home video release launch. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen a midnight launch for a movie before (I’m sure someone in the comments might prove me wrong), which is pretty incredible.

I’m considering making the trip to the San Francisco store to see how many people actually show up, but I already have my Dark Knight Blu-ray preordered through Amazon. You can also preorder now and avoid the lines on Amazon: $23.99 for the Blu-ray, $20.99 for the Two-disc DVD, or $47.99 for the super duper Blu-ray Batpod edition.

To backup the copy protection The Dark Knight DVD to PC hard drive, you just need a freeware, DVDSmith Movie Backup, which is as easy to use as 1, 2, 3!

    Strongly recommended!
  • Mine came in the mail today, watching my copy right now.

Best Buy did A Nice Midnight Release, They Handed out Joker Bat-Symbol T-Shirts for First 25 Or So People In Line, and Then Raffled Off A Couple $25 Gift Cards & A Copy Of the Soundtrack Just Before They Let Everyone In

Yeah I know you never mentioned that. I wasn't accusing you of doing that I was just making a general comment about something that really really annoys me. And it lived up to any hype it had, maybe even surpassed it.
  • "I don't wanna hear that this movie is over hyped"

    This movie was over-hyped.

And nowhere in any of my posts did I even mention Heath Ledger. If anyone is using his death as an excuse for anything, it would be the people pushing for an oscar win.
  • Charlie Paice
If you think this is such an over hyped movie than what are you doing looking at this thread? I don't wanna hear that this movie is over hyped because i think this movie is going to go down as the best super hero movie of all time, if not in the top 50 movies of all time. And i can't stand when people say that the only reason its so hyped is because Heath Ledger died. This movie would have been just as big if he were still alive. It's a shame he won't get a chance to accept his multiple oscars.
  • This is going to make so much money... again.
  • In college, we used to venture out to the local 24 hour WalMart Super Center and dig through the boxes at 12 AM for new releases. They always had the palettes out on the floor waiting to be emptied to shelves.

errr.... TDK dvd's have already been released in Europe... Picked it up about 10 times over the weekend - but my sister is buying ti for me for xmas so I had to leave it!

    Why the delay in America?
  • darrin
as a media supervisor with best buy - i can tell you that not all stores are allowed to partcipate in midnight releases. it depends a lot of times on the city and demand in that area for such things. we never had any midnight openings till this year after asking to be part of it for so long. we've had four game midnight openings and "dark knight" will be the first dvd/movie midnight release in the history of best buy - so yes this is a big deal and a big release
  • Sorry, I guess we don't all live in a world where a $24 DVD is a "small" purchase.

Titanic was released as well at Midninght!
  • that is WAY past my bedtime

    typo:

"Again, you're missing the point for some odd reason. :)
  • Baron von Munch
Actually, I implied (maybe poorly) that you're trying to be a 'voice of reason'. Trying to be 'that guy'. I'm not going to go to the midnight thing for sure.

Again, you're missing for some odd reason. My point was (and has always been) people can't be so afraid of spending cash, as long as it's responsible of course. It could something small as the Dark Knight, or could be a friggin' car.
  • If your "voice of reason" is saying that people need to go out and buy a Batman movie to kick-start the economy, then I think you need to reevaluate your concept of "reason".
  • Baron von Munch
But you're in an 'intense debate' on a website about movies, so don't please tell me what's my priority and what's not. i work hard for the rent, and the bills so it's not all tomfoolery here. When people try to dictate what's trivial and what's not, usually they're as guilty as everyone else. Unless you're perfect which is impossible.

    anyway.

I was basing on your attitude, more so than a midnight release of a movie, if you which you still didn't really answer either. Nor was I trying to be a jerk about it. But someone had to be the 'voice of reason' right?
  • TDK Fan
There was a huge turn out for Iron Man on DVD, too. "OUR" way as Americans is the right to spend "OUR" money any way we see fit, and for diehards fans, this is an opportunity to share their love for a movie soon to be a cult favorite. So far, Hollywood Video, Blockbuster, Best Buy, Hastings, Walmart, and some Circuit Citys will be open. So, obviously all retailers are catching on to the hype of releasing at midnight, or 12:01 as someoneput. Thing is that most Walmarts are open 24hrs anyway, but if you ask them about the movie at midnight, they'll be like "Huh?"
  • Donnie
i have to ask the question....... have we as a consumers lost are way? This seems a little unnecessary. Its a great Movie but a midnight release!? it seems like we americans need an excuse to line up for anything. Ill be buying it from amazon.
  • Warner had 30% off a while back with TDK BD preorder (& Shawshank) going for $18 each. Not the biggest fan of TDK (overrated a tad) but it's obviously a solid Batman/Nolan film and I couldn't pass those deals up. Stores staying open on launch (Launch? What is this, GTA?) sounds pretty ridiculous but what do I know...
  • I'd love to see a Batman movie that hasn't had all of the fun sucked out of the concept, leaving behind the dry and mediocre corpse that we all know as "The Dark Knight".

I still laugh when I remember the scene where Harvey Dent disarms the guy during the trial, punches him in the face, then turns smugly towards the chambers and delivers such a retarded one-liner.

Hmm, I'm surprised Best Buy is one of the stores staying open in my area, considering that none of the Best Buys in my area stayed open for the launch of any big games (like Halo 3 or GTA IV) or even game console releases (My friend had to wait in line from 10 at night till 7 in the morning when they opened to get his Wii on launch day). Just odd.
  • This is kind of sad.
  • Wow they are going to make some serious coin from these discs. This is pretty special. I'll buy this on DVD for sure, but as for getting it THE DAY its released, at a midnight launch?? Nah, not that excited, personally.

  • Star Wars Trilogy DVD set. 'nuff said
  • I'll likely grab mine from the exact same store.
  • Dvq
it has been for sale for like 4-5 days here in Mexico, regular and special dvd versions, no blu ray on sight tho.
  • waingro
titanic i remember was released at midnight at blockbuster.. i still remember the double VHS box.
  • Jokesareforlosers
Either that or they don't want to pirate the film.
  • Or maybe he's interested in spending his money on more important things then an over-hyped movie?

If anything, an economic crisis should remind people about their priorities in life. If buying a Batman movie is that high on your list, that you are willing to wait until midnight to purchase it, then I feel sorry for you.
  • ajt
At my Super Wal-Mart there are usually a fair amount of people that come in at midnight for most of the big release movies and games (Harry Potter, Iron Man, GTA IV, Madden). I'm definately picking mine up at midnight and then a group of friends are having a "viewing party" that night.
  • Hooray for buying stuff.
  • I think I am going to get the 2 disc special edition and a Blu-Ray copy. I cannot wait!
  • Marco
Does anyone know where I can find the best deal on the Blu-Ray copy? I know Amazon has it for 23.99 but I'm sure someone's gonna have it lower than that.
  • Aleks
I've got my copy... thank god for certain NYC retailers that don't listen to these damn release dates :)

    http://twitpic.com/oaax
  • i HATE this "12:01" bullshit.

Why do they have to make us wait an extra minute? I really wish the average person knew how to tell time properly.
  • darren
i'll be there to pick up Lost: Season 4
  • Wow!!! I didn't know they even had these either...lol...TDK was the shit, but staying open for the DVD/Blu Ray???...I can't wait for the Twilight DVD party...jk jk jk
  • Daniella
Yeah, I ran into this the other day at Best Buy. Too bad I purchased off Amazon.
  • Solid
I think it'll sell well, but then people will grow tired of watching batman and want to see something a little more challenging. I'm honestly tired of batman movies myself. We've had so many of them after all... But yeah, good 'solid' movie for the kids.

Don't mean to go off topic but yay I get to comment on my phone. Now sure why the new comment system (which I like) isnt up but at least now I can comment on a phone again for at least this post.

Anyways, im not gonna go because this movie is not worth me going there at mindight just buy a movie I saw already. A game is different but not a movie. Im still trying to see where's the best place to buy this from since I heard different places have different things.

i like the post by 'The Hick', as it captures what this is about: fun. i really don't understand all the negative bitching about something that brings groups of freinds together for a good time. but some of you just have to bitch and be mean about stuff no matter what it is. if you don't like it, can't you just shut the fuck up and let the rest of us enjoy things like this?
  • They also did midnight openings at some Best Buys for the Matrix Revolutions DVD.

haha that is awesome, anyone know if there is any midnight TDK parties in any of the Canadian stores?
  • Presto117
they have midnight releases for video games all the time.

force unleashed, guitar hero world tour, madden, all midnight releases.

so it's not that big a deal for a game, but i've never seen one for a dvd before.

but i'm not entirely sure if i'll be buying the blu-ray.

i thought this movie was great, definitely the best superhero movie, but for some reason i'm just not really feeling a second viewing.
  • sidewalkgod
yeah they are having a "dark knight" party here in houston blockbuster with popcorn and prizes. i know some are turned off by the buzz but im giddy abouting getting it at midnite. though a person has to preorder to get into the store. '
i think it's cool a comic book movie is getting this much hype and buzz. if they have midnite showings for theaters why not dvds/blu rays? Same thing different screen
  • Baron von Munch
Don't wanna sound like douche, but isn't it the point to get help get out of the recession is to help stiumulate the economy? Unless, you got laid off, can't find a job, or whatever, then you probably can buy the movie. Unless you wanna wait till Christmas!
  • I suppose it's a good marketing gimmick to not only achieve slightly heightened media attention, but also get the so-called 'harcore' Dark Knight fans out in droves. However in relation to myself, my excitement with the 'Dark Knight' subsided after I saw the film for the third time, and despite the fact it was pretty darn good I think I'll let the economic recession drift by before I buy this film (with that said, every time I say something like that I always end up forgetting away!).
  • Delta Assault
Damn, the only store near me is in Stonestown. Guess I'll have to wait till Tuesday morning.
