I was at the downtown San Francisco Best Buy yesterday when I noticed this signage when I walked in the door. Apparently some of the Best Buy stores are doing Midnight launches on Monday night for The Dark Knight DVD/Blu-ray. Apparently some Circuit City, Blockbuster Videos and Virgin Megastores will also be open at midnight for the home video release launch. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen a midnight launch for a movie before (I’m sure someone in the comments might prove me wrong), which is pretty incredible.

I’m considering making the trip to the San Francisco store to see how many people actually show up, but I already have my Dark Knight Blu-ray preordered through Amazon. You can also preorder now and avoid the lines on Amazon: $23.99 for the Blu-ray, $20.99 for the Two-disc DVD, or $47.99 for the super duper Blu-ray Batpod edition.

  • Hey Peter, They did a midnight launch with TITANIC back in 1997. I went to blockbuster and picked up my pre-order video at midnight. There was a decent amount of people doing the same!

  • The Blockbuster and Best Buy around here are open at midnight for it as well
  • Now that's odd. I'm from the UK and the movie came out in cinemas here a week after you guys. I kind of assumed you guys already had the DVD since it's release here is also this Monday.
  • enthusiasm for this movie has become sickening.
  • this has been on sale at the walgreens near me all week. lolz
  • I must be out of touch with reality, because I don't think I am that motivated for a DVD/Blu-ray release.
  • Seth
I'll wait till Christmas to get mine.

I'm pretty sure the "Star Wars" original trilogy when they were released on DVD was a midnight thing, though I could be wrong on that.
  • Rom
I thought The Dark Knight was pretty spiffy, but a midnight release for the DVD/Blu-ray versions is pretty weird.
  • I did the same thing with Return of the King, but this should be much more epic. I'm going to Hastings here in Denton, mainly because everything else in the store is 30% off.
  • @joshi: well, a week isn't that much of a difference. i would understand if it was like 6 months or something

I'll wait to see it in IMAX again on the rerelease, and hopefully some extended cut in the future that has better editing.
  • They had midnight parties at some Best Buys, Game Stops, and Game Crazys for The freakin' Force Unleashed in September.

And, as someone noted, there were plenty of stores staying open for the DVD release of the Star Wars Original Trilogy (as well as the first Battlefront game) in 2004.
  • I've been to video game midnight launches but I have never heard of a midnight launch for a movie before.
  • This will be the 3rd BluRay movie I'll purchase after Sunshine and American Psycho.
  • Gaius
The Blu-Ray version leaked online more than a week ago. I guess people still have really slow broadband out there.
  • Rick
In my area they did it for Titanic on VHS at the local blockbuster. I remember that night Screaming girls everywhere
  • I'll probably walk into our local Big W (Walmart to you guys) and grab one off the shelf during the day. I work in a store that in all other states are open at midnight for game launches..thank god our state is smart enough to let me sleep in.
  • For anyone interested, here's the list of all Best Buy's opening at 12:01. Some are even having an expanded midnight event: http://snipr.com/7gw2a

    The Dark Knight ,,,,
    presented in

I think you guys are nuts,,,,, :-)
  • This seriously bothers me that peeps feel the need to get this the moment its released... Why so Serious about it?
  • Jeff W.
That's funny, I picked The Dark Knight up today (Saturday) along with LOST Season 4 at Circuit City in Seekonk, MA.
  • Kokushi
Im a huge TDK fan but wtf buying the dvd at midnight? no way in hell i lose sleep to get a movie at that hour.
  • Delta Assault
Damn, the only store near me is in Stonestown. Guess I'll have to wait till Tuesday morning.
  • I suppose it's a good marketing gimmick to not only achieve slightly heightened media attention, but also get the so-called 'harcore' Dark Knight fans out in droves. However in relation to myself, my excitement with the 'Dark Knight' subsided after I saw the film for the third time, and despite the fact it was pretty darn good I think I'll let the economic recession drift by before I buy this film (with that said, every time I say something like that I always end up forgetting away!).
  • Baron von Munch
Don't wanna sound like douche, but isn't it the point to get help get out of the recession is to help stiumulate the economy? Unless, you got laid off, can't find a job, or whatever, then you probably can buy the movie. Unless you wanna wait till Christmas!
  • sidewalkgod
yeah they are having a "dark knight" party here in houston blockbuster with popcorn and prizes. i know some are turned off by the buzz but im giddy abouting getting it at midnite. though a person has to preorder to get into the store. '
i think it's cool a comic book movie is getting this much hype and buzz. if they have midnite showings for theaters why not dvds/blu rays? Same thing different screen
  • Presto117
they have midnight releases for video games all the time.

force unleashed, guitar hero world tour, madden, all midnight releases.

so it's not that big a deal for a game, but i've never seen one for a dvd before.

but i'm not entirely sure if i'll be buying the blu-ray.

i thought this movie was great, definitely the best superhero movie, but for some reason i'm just not really feeling a second viewing.
  • The Hick
haha that is awesome, anyone know if there is any midnight TDK parties in any of the Canadian stores?
  • They also did midnight openings at some Best Buys for the Matrix Revolutions DVD.

i like the post by 'The Hick', as it captures what this is about: fun. i really don't understand all the negative bitching about something that brings groups of freinds together for a good time. but some of you just have to bitch and be mean about stuff no matter what it is. if you don't like it, can't you just shut the fuck up and let the rest of us enjoy things like this?
  • Rosario
Don't mean to go off topic but yay I get to comment on my phone. Now sure why the new comment system (which I like) isnt up but at least now I can comment on a phone again for at least this post.

Anyways, im not gonna go because this movie is not worth me going there at mindight just buy a movie I saw already. A game is different but not a movie. Im still trying to see where's the best place to buy this from since I heard different places have different things.
  • Solid
I think it'll sell well, but then people will grow tired of watching batman and want to see something a little more challenging. I'm honestly tired of batman movies myself. We've had so many of them after all... But yeah, good 'solid' movie for the kids.
  • Daniella
Yeah, I ran into this the other day at Best Buy. Too bad I purchased off Amazon.
  • Wow!!! I didn't know they even had these either...lol...TDK was the shit, but staying open for the DVD/Blu Ray???...I can't wait for the Twilight DVD party...jk jk jk
  • darren
i'll be there to pick up Lost: Season 4
  • i HATE this "12:01" bullshit.

Why do they have to make us wait an extra minute? I really wish the average person knew how to tell time properly.
  • Aleks
I've got my copy... thank god for certain NYC retailers that don't listen to these damn release dates :)

    http://twitpic.com/oaax
  • Marco
Does anyone know where I can find the best deal on the Blu-Ray copy? I know Amazon has it for 23.99 but I'm sure someone's gonna have it lower than that.
  • I think I am going to get the 2 disc special edition and a Blu-Ray copy. I cannot wait!
  • Hooray for buying stuff.
  • ajt
At my Super Wal-Mart there are usually a fair amount of people that come in at midnight for most of the big release movies and games (Harry Potter, Iron Man, GTA IV, Madden). I'm definately picking mine up at midnight and then a group of friends are having a "viewing party" that night.
  • Or maybe he's interested in spending his money on more important things then an over-hyped movie?

If anything, an economic crisis should remind people about their priorities in life. If buying a Batman movie is that high on your list, that you are willing to wait until midnight to purchase it, then I feel sorry for you.
  • Jokesareforlosers
Either that or they don't want to pirate the film.
  • waingro
titanic i remember was released at midnight at blockbuster.. i still remember the double VHS box.
  • Dvq
it has been for sale for like 4-5 days here in Mexico, regular and special dvd versions, no blu ray on sight tho.
  • I'll likely grab mine from the exact same store.
  • Star Wars Trilogy DVD set. 'nuff said
  • This is pretty special. I'll buy this on DVD for sure, but as for getting it THE DAY its released, at a midnight launch?? Nah, not that excited, personally. Wow they are going to make some serious coin from these discs.
