At Comic Con, filmmaker Francis Lawrence revealed that he was working to develop an I Am Legend prequel. Then came rumors that the prequel was actually a sequel, and somehow Will Smith would still be involved. It really didn’t make much sense. Thankfully our friends at Collider got the chance to clear up the rumors while talking to Will Smith at the Seven Pounds junket — It’s a PREQUEL.

“We’re still trying to work through a couple of bumps in the story,” said Smith. “It’s essentially the fall of the last city – the last stand of Manhattan. The movie would be… within the body of the movie D.C. and then Manhattan would fall as the last city. It’s a really cool idea trying to figure it out… there’s a reason why we have to take a small band and we have to get into D.C. So we have to make our way from New York to D.C. and then back to New York.”

A couple days ago we were talking about how World War Z might be the first large scale zombie film, but it now looks like Smith and Lawrence are planning the same type of thing. It spans two cities! How cool is that?! Sure, we know where Smith’s character is likely to end by the time the credits roll, but it might be a fun roller coaster ride. And for those wondering, Smith also confirmed that the dog would return, but as a puppy.

  • That actually does sound pretty cool. I always wanted to see more of the flashbacks in I Am Legend, to see what happened after the Island was sealed off.

I hope they fix the issue of how bad those vampire zombies looked in the first movie...I couldn't tell what the hell they were even though they used to be different people they all looked the same....even zombies have personality
  • Sheriff Dewey
Prequel, sequel - It's a stupid idea no matter which way you cut it.
  • I hope it's like the first hour of Legend rather than the last half hour.
  • I can promise Will Smith that the last country standing would be Scotland, I mean the junkies are zombie like enough already but the alcoholics would put up a stronger fight than New Yorkers haha Interesting topic though how do you think different areas would deal? I'd reckon France would be first to rustle up some kind of Zombie delicacy.
  • why cant they just make movies that havent already been made :[?
  • Christopher M
I know Omega Man was such a better movie...Hollywood is official out of ideas
  • Well at least we will know how it ends.. Too bad the saw/feast guys are not writing this one :)
  • The sad thing is we're gonna have to wait another 10 years or so for someone to remake I Am Legend and hopefully get it right.
  • mcgruff
I dont know about the movie, but picture is freaking sweet!
  • The most interesting part of I Am Legend was clearly the neatness of seeing New York as a desolate place so I suppose seeing the downfall would be worth checking out on BluRay.. probably not worth the price of a ticket however.
  • Batemanater
Yeh and blueray is cheaper than a ticket!!!!!!
  • I was pretty skeptical about this sequel/prequel business, but after hearing this news I'm cautiously optimistic. Although the second half of "I am Legend" dropped the ball, the first half was pretty much amazing. I believe Francis Lawrence and Will Smith to be pretty 'switched on' guys, so I don't think they'd make the same mistake again. This could turn out to be pretty cool.
  • As long as they imporve the CGI or use at least some prosthetic make upon the vampires<?> then I'll be happy. The only thing that let the first film down was the CG, it took me right out of the film and I couldnt get resolve my issues with it.
  • I would much rather see World War Z than this. Considering these things are vampires and I have been on vampire overload lately
  • Bnitro
Ugh I hate prequels. No matter how much you throw at Will in this film you know he will survive. Lame.

What's with all the us city destruction ? Boring trend in films,,,.
  • Aaron
I agree with Warren. The CG in the last film was so poor that it pulled me out of the story completely whenever they were on screen. I read the book long before hearing about the film and was highly disappointed by that addition.
  • Spot on.. but this overload will keep going until the money stops coming in...
  • ilove this man
  • [A]
They've been this way for 25 years
  • This is has to be better since it cuts out a lot of Will Smith struggling to find people.
I think it'll be a lot more chaotic and less... boring.
  • Right on. Why is this a good idea in the first place?
  • It would all be better if they had actually made it like the book instead of just stealing the name Robert Neville. But, I admit, I liked the movie, except for the shitty CG vampires, and the ending. He should have died, or cured them.
  • Agree, less boring...although I liked the I Am Legend, I almost fell asleep watching it...
  • They should just do an entire movie on the dog 'Samantha'...
  • zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
  • I enjoyed I Am Legend but not enough to rush out and see a prequel. Especially when we know, no matter what, Will is going to survive until the end. Kind of spoils that character arc a little.
  • GOOD. ANYTHING TO TAKE TIME AWAY FROM W. SMITHS ACTING. HOPWFULLY THWEY WILL, PLEASE NOEXCUSES, PLEASE INCORPORATE OTHER ACTORS INTO THIS PRODUCT, ANYTHING . SMITH IS A TREMENDOUS OVER-ACTOR, AND ESPECIALLY WHEN HE ALONE, LIKE IN LEGEND 1. IT WAS REAL BAD. I LIKED HOW PARTS OF THE FILM TOOK PLACE/ WERE SHOT IN FRONT OF M OFFICE AT 100 PARK AVENUE, BUT I HAD TO TURN IT OFF. SMITH WAS THAT BAD. PLEASE - ADDITIONAL CHARACTERS IN THIS PRE-QUEL. PLEASE.
  • Still not interested.
  • I didn't really like 'I Am Legend' I didn't really understand what the general public turned into, were they vampires, zombies, emos maybe or something completely new? anyway they looked incredibly fake it was a bad idea to make them with CGI and why wouldn't they die when Will Smith would empty a clip of ammunition into them? I hope the prequel will be better.
