Len Wiseman to helm Atlantis Rising

Underworld and Live Free or Die Hard helmer Len Wiseman has signed on to direct a big screen adaptation of Platinum Studios’ five-part apocalyptic sci-fi comic book mini-series Atlantis Rising. The book’s official plot description follows:

“After more than a thousand years of peaceful coexistence, Atlantis and the surface world are on the brink of war with the fate of both civilizations hanging in the balance.”

Sounds like a pretty cool concept — a war between the inhabitants of the land and the sea? You can read the first four issues of the comic book for free on drunkduck.com. Transformers writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci originally brought the project to DreamWorks, but it is unclear if they will write the screenplay adaptation. Variety says that Wiseman will probably helm Motorcade first.

  • In story outline this sounds like a bit of a rip-off of John Wyndam's "The Kraken Wakes."
  • Sounds like Underworld: Underwater
  • I read all of the issues for this except the final one. It was an okay book that never took full advantage of the premise. Tons of action and a really cool opening scene that is still memorable, but most of the characters were one dimensional. Hopefully they can get a good screenwriter to make up for where the source material stumbles.

This could be awesome. I just read the four issues available online for free, and while I agree with the other commenters on the graphic novel's shortcomings, this has major potential.
  • Waterworld 2....fuck....
  • I wonder if Vinnie Chase is in talks to reprise his role for this one.
  • @ Aqualeo, if they gave it that title, I would watch it no matter who directed/starred in /wrote it, Wiseman showed with Underworld that he is capable of beatiful and stylish visuals which is what I would expect from this film. What would be pretty cool is if they got the people who wrote the story for Bioshock to do this. Seriously, are game story writers getting any writing action in Hollywood? They're really good.
  • They already made this, i think it was on one of the Simpson's halloween specials where the dolphins took over.

  • Aquaman, bitches!

Cool. There are never to little of these kind of movies. I have sometimes thought about why there is always aliens from space etc. The ocean can hide such cool secrets so use the ocean insteds.
I will absolutely watch this movie if it is made. Loved the comic so. And if the movie is beautiful in visual style then I will watch it twice.
