Parkour seems to be the new hot buzz word in Hollywood. It’s kinda like how all the story pitches last year tried to compare themselves to Children of Men (”It’s Die Hard meets Children of Men”).

Founded in France, the fast paced movement became the main focal point of the Luc Besson-produced 2004 action film District B13. English-speaking audiences will probably better recognize the technique from the opening chase sequence in Casino Royale. The movement has since found its way into other Hollywood films like Live Free or Die Hard and The Incredible Hulk and the video game Mirrors Edge. Parkour is key to the action sequences in Disney’s upcoming video game to film adaptation of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

And now hack directors are starting to adopt the buzz word. Van Hellsing director Stephen Sommers claims that his upcoming big screen re-imagining of Tarzan will incorporate the technique. According to Entertainment Weekly, the new Tarzan will be more like Pirates of the Caribbean, “with buffed-and-tanned actors flying through the jungle and sprinting up trees, parkour-style.” Wow, yeah, I have no faith in Sommers.

If you want to see a cool Parkour sequence, watch David Belle’s chase scene from District B13 after the jump.

i thought i read somewhere once that Guillermo Del Toro wanted to make a Tarzan movie...

we wouldnt see it for, like, five years, but i think THAT would be cool

why bother calling it Tarzan if they arent going to stick w/ the original mythology, origin and basically everything else that would make it a "Tarzan" movie?

yeah, a tarzan movie that actually has interesting naturalistic adventure scenes is ridiculous.
  • One "L" in Van Helsing.
  • I had heard the term loosely tossed around, but never figured I would need to know the definition. I guess now I know. I am a fan when its done right..... Tarzan though?
  • Didn't Disney's Tarzan do similar... and from what I remember, that went down pretty well (although it was a well written movie as well).

If they use David Belle this movie would be good but i dont know how his engrish is?
  • I could definitely see Parkour being a part of Tarzan.
  • Well, to be fair, I seem to remember a lot of the action in the animated Tarzan having a sort of Parkour feel to it. And that EW quote sounds more like one person's attempt at an interesting analogy than an accurate description from the people involved.

All of that said, this movie's probably going to suck. Sommers has made maybe one or two good films, and that's it.
  • I remember Yamakasi also. Story was wack but the flippin' was cool
  • If the movie was just going to be a guy in a bear skin running like a mad man through the jungle and fightinh gorillas i would probably see it

but seeing as how it will probably be Brendan Fraiser in a loin cloth frollicking through a field ill pass
  • parkour is cool when you see a professional do it, and its great for laughs when you watch an amatuer. so maybe the tarzan movie can use pros, and an apatow or kevin smith movie could use noobs.
  • asianrage
He already did that. George of the Jungle, anyone?
  • kinda what i was going for
  • Parkour is Awesome, Tarzan is gangsta...put the two together...O yeah son, o yeah...better yet, they should do a parkour movie with a setting like children of men...with tarzan as the hero...
  • I have no faith in anything Stephen Sommers directs or touches; however using a Parkour-esque style to Tarazan's moving through the jungle isn't that far fetched. As it's been said about Disney's animated Tarzan did have that feel, so it's not outlanish. Of course, this is Sommers and he is often outlandish.
  • Han is Solo
    Wait...what?

Why Steven Sommers? Why can't it be Guillermo? Or Alfonso Cauron? or Peter Jackson? WHY SOMMERS?

Don't get me wrong, I think Parkour is absolutely amazing when done in the right hands...and Tarzan is such a fantastic story.

    But why Sommers!!??!!??
  • There's a great, informative post about Parkour in film over at WebUrbanist: http://weburbanist.com/2008/06/30/10-examples-of-...

I love Stephen Sommers - the things he says are so amazingly ridiculous.
  • Delta Assault
We need an Apatow Parkour movie made. Then we'd have the ultimate modern movie cliche.

    Apatow.
  • This one doesn't even make sense in my head.

Actually, the first Parkour movie was "Yamakasi" written by Luc Besson, check: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0267129/
  • Sounds like there is potential for some very unique, cool action sequences. As for Sommers, from what i've seen he's not incapable of pulling it off.
  • How about a Kevin Smith - Parkour movie? You wouldn't even notice the style taking place! Buzz word trends are lame but they seem to get the job done. Sadly.

They really don't know how to leave a good thing alone these days do they? Are filmmakers THAT desperate for money? I'm so incredibly close to eliminating anything and everything film from any aspect of my life. This is getting ridiculous beyond comprehension.
