Jay Baruchel is The Sorcerer’s Apprentice

Jay Baruchel (Fanboys, Tropic Thunder) is in talks to play the lead role in Disney’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. Inspired by the classic Mickey Mouse animated sequence from Disney’s 1940 classic Fantasia, the film tells the story of a powerful sorcerer, played by Nicolas Cage, who seeks out an apprentice in modern day New York City. National Treasure-series helmer Jon Turteltaub directs the Jerry Bruckheimer production.

Not much else is known about the film at this time, but the writers involved might give you some idea of what to expect — The film was scripted by Superman IV: The Quest for Peace screenwriters Lawrence Konner and Mark Rosenthal, with a rewrite by Bedtime Stories scribe Matt Lopez.

  • Aw man....looks like another Nic Cage movie where he'll give us another interesting hair piece.

I'm starting to become a Nic Cage apologist, though. Just because his acting choices are so baffling they're almost entertaining.
  • HE WAS THE WORST PART OF TROPIC THUNDER.
  • All we can do now is hope and pray so, I guess. Doesn't remove the bad taste from the mouth about this one...
  • Sounds really bad but it's good for Jay Baruchel.
  • I thought Jay Baruchel was both a great and essential addition to the cast of Tropic Thunder, helping to anchor it to reality amidst a collection of hugely satirical and ridiculous characters.

Have to agree with the guy above me (Adam). Jay was not only great in his role, but was important in the fact that he was the only down-to-earth person and normal person bringing balance to the ensemble.

I totally agree. I thought Jay was the bet part of Trpoic thunder... really anchored the movie. I hate this for him though. Don't do it, Karpie. Nic Cage does not a good movie make.

It's nice to see Jay in talks of big roles like this even though I'm not sure about the film itself.
  • Goro
Good Lowered. Who is GreenLighting this film? Make an animated movie out it? Yeah. A Live action modern-world with Nic Cage? Dood, put down the crack pipe...
  • Surely you're not springing April Fools jokes on us already, Peter. This sounds like an abomination. If they're going for dark comedy here, and not a family film, maybe I can tolerate this, but I doubt it. Oh, Disney. What have you done now?
  • Noone here knows that Fantasia was based on Goethes Zauberlehrling!

    Shame on you!

I read the words Nicolas Cage as a sorcerer and all I can picture is Nicolas Cage as Fu Manchu from the Grindhouse "trailers"
  • a fantasia-inspired movie written by the guys who did superman 4? a you effing kidding me?
  • Is he going to actually be playing Mickey Mouse?
  • Ehhhhh.. something sounds off about this. Maybe it's just me imagining the film in my head.. Nic Cage being a sorcerer in modern day New York?

I'm sure it'll involve a lot of mid-sentence volume escalation.
  • What the fuck.
  • Dereck Perez
I read this screenplay, and it's just a Harry Potter rip off. The whole mythology behind the story involves Merlin the Wizard, and it comes off as not interesting, and confusing.
  • Just what the world needs, a Bruckheimer adaptation of a classic Disney adaptation starring Nic Cage. Fucksake.
  • Just what the world needs, a Bruckheimer adaptation of a classic Disney animation starring Nic Cage. Fucksake.
  • Maybe he'll channel his early days of kickassery.
  • Dereck Perez
The only connection to Fantasia involves a scene in the script where the main character makes mops dance.
  • Dr. Doc
come on Jay, your better than this...
  • Samantha Pruitt
totally agree! he was my favorite part of the movie! He's also not so bad on the eyes! I loved him in Knocked Up and when he did the special guest appearance on NUMB3RS, that was really great.

Maybe he can salvage this really strange sounding movie.
  • Jay Baruchel? Ok. I like the guy. But WHY Nicholas Cage???? WHYYYYY!?!?! Keep him in movies like Adaptation and Matchstick Men! THAT'S IT!
  • Brian
What in the world?! This Jay Baruchel is garbage, and that's putting it lightly. No talent. No idea why he's still getting jobs. I love Disney, but wtf? My faith in everything I love is slowly but surely fading away to nothing.
Nic Cage...although I enjoy him in things like National Treasure....because it's fun and he can only play one character no matter what film he's in, I have to say it's also an odd choice.
  • hahaha I hope this isn't a joke and that the movie actually gets made bc I think it will provide hours and hours of comedy for the rest of my life.
