Darren Aronofsky Wants to Recut The Fountain

Darren Aronofsky tells MTV that he would like to revisit The Fountain at some point.

“It wouldn’t be a ‘director’s cut,’” he said — more like an alternate story told with the addition of unused footage from the first go-round. This would be a complicated project on a couple of levels, though, and it’s at least a few years away.”

For those who don’t remember, Brad Pitt pulled out of Aronofsky’s first attempt at filming The Fountain weeks before filming was supposed to begin. The eventual 2006 film was created with a smaller budget and different stars. They way I’ve understood it, scenes were changed and dropped due to the budgetary reasons (you can actually see something close to Aronofsky’s original vision of The Fountain in comic form) but I wasn’t aware that any footage had been shot from that initial effort. The film was passed over when it was released, but has found a growing cult following on DVD.

A revisited cut would be awesome, but my first thought is that Warner Bros won’t put the money up to make it happen. But who knows… The current DVD is a barebones release, and as the film’s popularity grows, there will be a growing demand for a special edition (finally combining the commentary Aronofsky recorded and put online). And with the evolution into a new format (Blu-ray), it might be a good idea for Warners to explore. Either way, it sounds like it might be years away.

  • I would really love to see this. It took about 3 watches for The Fountain to grow on me, but now it is one of my all-time-favorites. The soundtrack, alone, should have won all kinds of awards.
  • very, very interesting.
  • Not sure but I think the fountain had a limited release on blu-ray earlier this year. I'm really looking forward to this.
  • Normally I wouldn't condone this, but since it is Darren I will let it slide. Proceed.

Paramount (or Icon, whatever) allowed Brian Helgeland recut Payback, even after he was fired during production, so why not? It might give a movie an entirely different story. Could please fans of the originally-released cut, could make them angry (but I think Aronofsky's fans will gobble up anything he puts out, myself included).
  • Yeah, the Fountain was released on Blu-Ray and HD DVD back in 2007.
  • Yeah, but its still just the barebones edition, right?

Is it possible that he could get to do a new cut as part of the long rumored idea of taking The Fountain to Criterion? I haven't heard anything on it in awhile but I imagine that they would love to help work with him to put together a great Blu-Ray edition of the film as part of their collection.
  • Not really. Sometimes the first cut is not the film the director wanted to make. It's just the film the studio wanted to see. When such things happen there is a very good reason for a recut / director's cut.
  • I wouldn't mind this at all. Just to see what he plans to do with it. Hell, if he made a version that came with both cuts, the soundtrack, and the graphic novel? I'd buy all those items over again. Just to get that collection.

I would buy it AGAIN Darren. Sock it to me two time!

Whew, I really really wanted to like this movie. I'm a huge fan of movies in this vein. But, I just couldn't get it...I mean, I understand the premise but wow, this thing needed to be edited and fine tuned. I would say that's the only thing it has in common with Blade Runner after years of editing we did finally get a perfect movie. But, I really don't think the fountain is half the film Blade Runner is or even was in it's first ver. This and the prestige did make me a fan of Hugh though.
  • If they had shot some secondary unit shots why would they have not used them in the Jackman version? If they had taken the time and spent the money I would think they would have been integrated into the Pitt-less version.
  • There's an hour long making-of documentary and a trailer. I would definitely be willing to double-dip for some kind of deluxe edition though.

I suffer a certain kind of bittersweetness watching the film embrace themes it's budget couldn't fully realize and then going through the graphic novel as a blueprint of what-coulda-been. So f*ckyeah Aronofsky should "revisit" The Fountain and elaborate (re-cut/additional shooting?) and the longer the wait, the better.
  • Funny, I just got this from Netflix yesterday. I haven't watched it yet, but probably will sometime over the weekend.
  • This is great news. The film is amazing. I'm a huge fan of anything Aronofsky does.

Peter, when he says unused footage from the first go-around, I think he just means offcuts from the Jackman version. As opposed to leftovers from the Brad Pitt version, which I believe you're right, never shot anything.
  • But then why would he say "first go around" then? Also, I've talked to Aronofsky a couple times now and he usually refers to the Bitt film as "the first version of the Fountain"
  • Ugh, why would he even bring this movie up anymore? All the crap it went through.. I'm so over it.

sorry guys. the fountain sucked. boring, pretentious, what have you. true, the visuals were cool, but that is what you get from music video directors. you need cohesive story too.
  • I love the theatrical cut, and I know Aronofsky's complete vision will be even better.
  • Goro
    Cut it in half... lengthwise.

sorry pangloss, the fountain is brilliant. the story is fantastic. watch it again. maybe you missed something. it does get better the more ya watch it. and i loved it the first time.
  • Agreed on all points. It was my favourite film of that year, and I've watched it a few more times on HD. It doesn't get old. I think it's one of those films that will grow in stature over the years as more people discover it.
WB totally botched the marketing on it - from trailers to awards buys. This should have at least been in the running for most of the tech categories, and Clint Mansell was criminally ignored for his beautiful score (although I think the Globes did give it a nom).
  • I kind of thought the same thing, at least the pretentious part. But after David and Devindra gave some input about the film a few months ago, I have decided to give it another shot, hopefully in HD soon..

Anyone have a link to the commentary he did? It's not on his website anymore (Well there is a link on the front page but it's broken).

Hopefully they did shoot footage the first time, my point is just that the wording is up for debate. Maybe he would be kind enough to clarify? :)
  • i still have not seen the film and wonder if i should . should i hold out for this recut
  • As much as I'd like to agree with a fan of Voltaire, I could not agree any less. I didn't find the movie boring at all, but that could just be attributed to my taste in movies.
  • Makes me think of Tarantino and the intro he gave to the Pulp Fiction deleted scenes where he says: "I'm just sharing these with you, I'm not putting these back in the film, because I made the film I wanted to make THE FIRST TIME."

    Smart ass.

I understand varying circumstances on all kinds of productions warrant director re-cuts (hell, I'm re-cutting one of my short films for festival release...) but still, I like how Tarantino rubs salt in the wound. He has a point.

i love the existing version of the fountain so much a big part of me would hate to see it tampered with. unlike its critics, and it would appear aronofsky himself, i find the movie practically flawless.

on the other hand, anything that he sees fit to add to the film is definitely intriguing.

the fountain is the new blade runner.

I'd be interested in a new cut, but only if it's released with the original and with far more behind-the-scenes extras AND new commentary tracks for both versions.

"The Fountain" is one of my favorite films ever, but I've seen it enough times now that I've grown accustomed to its rhythm, and a new cut would kind of jarring, much like the new version of "Yellow Submarine" from a few years back.

So I'd be curious, but I feel like you have a limited time for this kind of thing before the audience becomes too comfortable with the original to really warm to changes.

I think that the restricted budget was a blessing as the microphotography used for the future sequence kicks the living shit out of any CG that they could have cooked up. It's more random and organic-looking, and just fits the atmosphere and themes of the film in a much stronger way.

BTW, pangloss09, if you really think that "The Fountain" was boring, pretentious, "sucked" and didn't make sense then you weren't paying attention! You also need to be a romantic to "get" this film, but then, your girlfriend prolly knows that that's a lost cause! :-P

Seriously though, if you didn't like the film that much, why the *uck are you wasting your bile on this thread for?! Go kick a dog or something.

Just a warning, the provided link to the comic book on amazon is not the graphic novel, it is a script with a few photos to go along. The graphic novel is another entry.
  • RE-CUT? MORE LIKE RE-SUME
THIS FILM PROJECT RAN OUT OF MONEY AND DARREN HAD TO DO HIS BEST TO WRAP IT UP AND THROW SOME KIND OF ENDING TOGETHER- FAST. NEEDS TO GET FINISHED. IT DID END REALLY BAD. CONCENTRATE ON THE FIGHTER, DARREN. NOT CLEANING UP OLD TRASH. THANKS.
