Bryan Singer Not Involved in Superman Sequel Talks

UGO got a chance to grill Bryan Singer about his involvement with a new Superman film. Unfourtunately, his answer is somewhat cryptic.

UGO: Are you officially involved in this talk of the new film?

BS: I am not officially involved in the talk, no.

UGO: But when talk happens they’ll call you.

BS: Well it’s, you know, I have relationships with Warner Brothers and with the character and, and, and, and it’s just the way things work out.

UGO: But you are not divorced from Superman at this point.

BS: No.

From what I can gather, Warner Bros/Legendary Pictures/DC Comics are having preliminary discussions about a new Superman film, but Singer is not involved in those talks. I know the consensus behind the scenes is that Singer shouldn’t direct the next film, and there has even been talk of a complete reboot. I have heard rumors that Singer has a stipulation in his Superman Returns contract that forces Warner Bros to go to him first before seeking other directors. I’ve never been able to confirm this. I am actually one of the few who actually dug Singer’s Superman, and would be very interested to see him go all “Wrath of Kahn” with Man of Steel (as Singer once put it). But I just don’t think its going to happen. I think Warner Bros will eventually talk Singer into an producer role so that both sides don’t loose face. But we’ll see…

im glad Bryan Singer is not involved he failed Superman big time he should stick to X-Men some of guys sayin Superman Returns is good actually it was only alrite but it was load of shit when i watched it at the cinema alot of people felt that the movie was not a Superman movie it was boring and alot of people felt like this was the same old Superman movie that we seen already no creativity to that movie. plus everyone in the cinema said what the fuck is Cyclop is the Superman Returns plus why the fuck Superman have a son for and never been around to look after the child his about hope and justice. I am surprise that Superman, Lois and Richard White (aka Cyclops lol) did not appear on a special addition of Maury Povich "WHO IS MY BABY DADDY"

Brandon Routh is just another Christopher Reeve look-a-like i think Brandon Routh is alrite but he needs to have more charisma to Clark Kent/Superman plus he needs to bulk up big time.

They should not have superman have a son at all maybe if they reboot the movie and make it a trilogy on the 3rd and final film Lois Lane tells Clark/Superman that she is pregnant with his child i know she cant get pregnant with superman but maybe superman loses his powers or something and thats how he come becomes Lois Baby Daddy LMAO.

another thing make Lex Luther ruthless like the comic books and also have LexCorp in the damn new movie at less and have Superman fight a Super Villian i.e. Darksied or maybe Brainiac i rather Darksied tho.

Warner Bros and DC need to get rid of Jon Peters completly from Superman movie this guy dont know shit about Superman. he did not want superman to fly and he wanted superman to fight a giant spider for fuck sake. he used to be Barbra Streisand's hairdresser plus he sexual harassment a guy name Brian Quintana come on now we dont want this dude name mention in the Superman Reboot. already Superman has trouble of people calling Superman gay superhero so its a good thing to get rid of Bryan Singer whos openly gay plus Jon Peters who sexual harass men lol. (sorry if anyone who is gay and did not like the last comment)

Singer's direction was NOT the problem. it was the writing/story/villain. I hope they keep routh. he's a keeper. but yeah i agree with the guy above me that Jon Peters needs to go.

Keep Singer away for Christ sakes!!! And no, just because he upped the anted in X-2 doesn't mean he can do the same with a Superman Sequel. You are talking about two different kinds of fanbase here. Look, make the movie an epic, make it over 2 and half hours. Foucs on the character and his inner conflict with who he is and how he fits in a society that really doesn't understand him. Throw in a powerful Lex Luthor who challenges Superman not with Kryptonite, but with wits. Throw in Darkseid and extremely powerful and intelligent villian, one who is more than a match for Superman, one who can challenge Supes morals and force Superman to decided when is it proper to kill and not. Have Darkseid capture Lois and torture her to force Superman to abondon his morals. The have the ultimate fight scene toward the end, Superman in an uncommon blaze of anger barely defeating Darkseid ready to kill him when Lois still suffering from her wounds plead with Superman not to cross that line and betray what he stands for. So you see you CAN have a decent story line with proper actions sequences. I present for your consideration Casino Royal a proper mix of action, drama, and suspence. Superman Returns to me was like Quantum of Solace, no flair, no substance, just utter disappointment. What do you all think? How about you Peter S.?
  • While I didn't hate Routh in the movie, he did seem to be playing Christopher Reeves as Superman rather than his own interpretation of the character. With a reboot nothing about it should resemble former films least of all the lead, in my opinion.
  • thank god!
  • So this is a non-story.
  • Returns was really really weak but it did get tone and atmosphere dead on. If they're not going to let singer redeem himself they better make damn sure the next movie doesn't ignore all things he got right.
  • Christopher M
As much as I like Singer...Returns was just a mix of the Donner films more of an homage than something new....unless he agrees to axe Luther as the villain maybe settling on the numerous villains that have never been on screen...Doomsday being the main one....Warner Bros. would perfectly in their rights to create a reboot, because we really haven't seen anything new with these movies...Superman/Clark Kent still seems to act and talk like he's living in the 40's....that timely charm isn't what it used to be...I know that it's "Superman" but could we at least try to ground him in some sort of reality....and give him more than three lines per scene....If Brandon can't act or emote get a new actor... Henry Cavill was originally asked to read for Superman...he'd be perfect...he also read for Bond and Batman
  • It's probably for the best that Singer isn't involved. I would like to see a more adult superman, something that doesn't turn the character into a cheese fest.
  • If Singer's proved anything to us, it's that he's really good when given a second chance. As much as people loved it, I was too fond of the first -Men film, it was an okay film, but somewhat mediocre in my view. The second was amazing though.

Really, I know that in reality, Warner Bros won't risk using him as director again and will likely go for a reboot, but personally, I'd be interested to see where Singer was going with Returns. No, I didn't much like it, but I did see promise.
  • Sorry, typo's ahoy. I meant:

"I WASN'T too fond of the first 'X'-Men film."
  • Cornelius
I may be one of the few to say that Superman Returns was a great film, it seems that Singer had at least two films in mind, and I believe he would make a more thrilling and action driven sequel if given the chance. This doesn't look like it will be happening, although I thought that Mark Millar's pitch for the 8 hour trilogy was really interesting.
  • Rocksteady
I dont know why everyone hated Superman Returns, I thought it was a great film. Obviously it was not as good as the Dark Knight, but I do think it was attempting to break through the comic book barrier in the same regard. It was attempting to be more than X-men, Ironman, or Spiderman. Nevertheless, while it may have been less action packed I thought as a "film" it holds up very well, and would like to see Singer (though I'm not his biggest fan) continue where the last film left off.
  • Anrkist
I enjoyed it as well... I could have done without the happy go lucky Parker Posey and Kevin Spacey... I felt Returns was *slightly* more serious than the originals and they somewhat ruined it for me.
  • nelson
imagine if he never did returns and made X3 instead of ratner man we could always dream
  • dude, you're not one of the few. you're one of the many who liked the movie. everybody i know likes it or loves it. the few people i've talked to who hated it are the kind of people who think everything should be ultra gritty, and think Dane Cook is funny
  • Peter, you're not alone in your love of SUPERMAN RETURNS. I feel that most people that dislike the film don't really understand Superman as a character. This is why they keep saying things like, "Where's all the action?"
Superman is, and always should be, a character story. If you leave behind the character element for mindless action sequences, you kill Superman.
Singer was also taking the character into new depths that the comics have never touched. Essentially, creating a new Superman canon. The fact that this will not continue to be explored is a tragedy.
As for Millar's pitch, it's evident that he has no idea who Superman is whatsoever. I liked "Superman: Red Son", but Millar's trilogy is not a Superman tale.

nitroslick, I am all for character...but the reason that I don't like Superman Returns is because I can't get over the stupid idea to build a new continent then have superman lift it into space? Am I remembering correctly?

I like most of Singer's films less and less with time...
  • Best news I've heard all day...
  • Delta Assault
    Yes, you remembered it correctly.

I never understood how Superman was able to lift a continent made of kryptonite if walking on it earlier made him weak enough to get owned by Luthor's goons.
  • Jeff
Not to mention that Luthor, if I remember correctly, stabbed him with kryptonite and left it inside him.
  • I wish they would get their act together and decide what the hell they want to do with Superman! It is getting ridiculous now, seriously!
  • i want the wrath of khan of superman movies to happen
  • Mikey M
    *Cough* Tom Welling *Cough.
  • Like Adam said in a podcast, I would've like to see what Singer could have done with "The Man of Steel" (working title). Look at the level he stepped up to with "X2."
  • Syndicateman
There's a lot of love going on about Superman Returns....Too much love. The film wasn't good, and if Singer should have noticed how bad the script was before he started shooting.

Hopefully Brandon Routh won't get tapped to play Superman again.... I mean, just because a person looks like Christopher Reeves doesn't mean they are cut out to be Superman.
  • 790
Singer made some mistakes with the superkid and the Kryptonite bs factor,,,
Allowing those to be in the final script is what ultimately killed "Superman Returns". Overall,,,,it wasn't Routh,,, + not too mention the Lex Luthor plot that was just retarded from the beginning.
I wonder if the studio insisted those two plot points be in the film. So lame ,,,,
  • greycolumbus
Gee, and I wanted to see what would be of Superjunior.
  • fex
Whatever. I don't really even care for Superman and found myself liking "Superman Returns". Brandon Routh did a good job and It's sad that he propably won't reprise the role. Say what you will, Singer did Warners a soild.
  • Solid
Anyone ever watch Justice League on cartoon network? Do the movie like that please and stop this sequels to old as hell movies stuff. And give us a Flash movie while we're still young. The Dark Knight changed EVERYTHING.
  • The difference is that on X2 he had more money and creative control than on X1. On Superman he had almost complete creative control and a massive budget from the get-go and still the movie was underwhelming.
  • Solid
This is sad. The next superman film won't be as good as Returns was. It'll be a piece of shit video game like Incredible Hulk. Was it the internet stuff that lost Singer a directors spot? I hope not because it was all bullshit between fanboys, nothing special. I wonder what regular average folks thought of the new superman.
  • Glenn Woodford
I agree with Kevin Smith...Returns was BORING.
Keep Singer away from Superman. He's proved already he has little understanding of the characters. And his ego is so big he inflicted the inane superkid fiasco on the franchise.
  • J. Larripa
Bryan Singer should never have even gotten involved with Superman! Why? Did anyone here see X-Men 3? Exactly, a disaster! But not if Bryan Singer had stuck with the project. The REAL X3 would have been brought to the screen, and based on what the story treatment was before Brett Ratner and Halle Berry mutilated it, it was set to be something very special! And if thats not enough, now Superman will be rebooted.....taking away from the films what has to be the best ever visualization come up with by Richard Donner of Krypton and Kal-El. I try to be objective, but Bryan Singer has single-handedly ruined two great comic book film franchises. Returns was a fair movie, but the character story lines will now fall into obscurity! Thats what he gets!!
