Sunshine Soundtrack Sees The Light of Day After All

We’ve written a few times about the soundtrack to Danny Boyle’s latest film, Slumdog Millionaire, while simultaneously referencing the fact that the soundtrack to Boyle’s Sunshine has been stuck in legal hell for quite some time now. In 2007, producer Andrew Macdonald said explicitly that there were “no plans to release” the soundtrack. This was a huge shame, as composer John Murphy put some great work into the film, and Underworld also lent some sublime sounds.

Now comes word via The Playlist that the soundtrack has been released via iTunes! You can download the soundtrack by CLICKING HERE. There are two tracks that I’d strongly recommend: “Sunshine (Adagio in D Minor),” which I believe is played during the climax of the film, and I Am Kloot’s “Avenue of Hope,” a beautiful song that evokes a profound sadness. The former is a great track that has been used in movie trailers such as the one for Blindness. The latter song was used in the film’s end credits sequence, cut expertly to random shots from the film. In the commentary for Sunshine, Boyle revealed that the reason for doing this was because the shots from the film were just so damn good, it’d be a shame not to use them again. (P.S. I love Danny Boyle). Check out an ultra-low-quality video of the film’s credits (with annoying subtitles) below:

Discuss: Have you checked out the Sunshine soundtrack yet? What do you think?

Interesting. I know a while ago John Murphy sent a copy of the soundtrack to somebody he knows personally, and they uploaded it to some private torrent sites. It was definitely a legit version, because it played a variation of the main theme that I've only seen in some new commercial. This version on iTunes seems to be significantly different. I'll have to check it out and let you know just how different it is.
  • hey dave, know anywhere i can listen to this for free like the soundtracks to dark knight and benjamin button?
  • also, that song used in the blindness trailer is so much more awesome when seen in context in sunshine.

    I'm excited this was released.

I'm not excited that it's only on DRM iTunes at 128.

Hmm... wow. I was psyched when I saw this, and downloaded it right away. But the music here is definitely... different than the music used in the film... the climax near the end ("Adiago in D minor"/"Surface of the Sun" if you had the leaked version) is even in an entirely different key. I'm listening to them side by side. Emphasis is put on different instruments, too. I wonder why that is.

If you can, get your hands on the leaked/ripped version. Definitely won't be deleting mine.
  • Andyrooskie
And there are snippets of dialogue covering the music in parts.

    ???

Yay! I waited for 2 years for this movie to come out and now something like another 1 1/2 for the damn music! I am always a fan of John Murphy's work, so I will be buying this shortly!
  • Gee, the cover sucks. I had to look twice to see that John Murphy is involved.
  • gooso
get a torrent guys if you really want it. i got it. its great and there is no dialogue coving any of the music.

    it is really really good
  • I'm glad it's officially released, but from what I'm reading the leaked version is better? That true or just crazy talk?
  • I downloaded the leaked version a while ago and have listened to it on a continual basis since.

    Absolutely superb.
  • Marie
Hey where did you find the better version. I just downloaded the Itunes version and although it is good, it isn't as good as the leaked version i heard on youtube.
  • Burt Nelson
I downloaded that shit a long time ago. Brilliant. Itunes sucks. I'm not wasting my money on a digital copy.
  • I watched Sunshine on HBO on Friday night w/ some friends while hammered. I couldn't stop thinking about how great it was.

    Album Only? COME ON, iTunes!

    FINALLY!

Wow, I am really excited about this. Sunshine is a fantastic movie and the music was awesome as well. Dave, from what I have heard listening to the /filmcast, you are a big movie soundtrack/score lover and I was just wondering if you had any recommendations. Just if you have time. Thanks!
  • They lost out on this one by waiting so long to release it.
  • I'm listening to it right now. I especially like track 19.
  • I would also like to add that Slumdog's soundtrack is fucking incredible..."O...Saya" being one of my favorite tracks. I really dig the mix of Bollywood and hip hop. I'm sure this is all stuff everyone has heard before seeing as /film is definitely pushing people to see this movie (as they rightly should) but I thought I would throw in my two cents.
  • I've had the leaked version for about a year now. And it's a great soundtrack. Underworld did a great job here.

As for itunes. I'll wait for the official cd or at the very least the Amazon version.
  • I honestly need to get around to watching this. I saw the trailer in the cinema and laughed my ass off, it looked so lame, so many cliche lines and moments. But my friends tell me the trailer didn't do it justice and that its a good film, so I will give it a shot (sci fi and I usually don't mix well.) Mind you, these same friends reckon The Godfather is long and boring, so I'm hesitant.
  • That song is lovely.
  • Haphazardb141
Dammit I've been waiting for this soundtrack to hit Itunes for so long, but I don't want the whole damn thing, I just want the two songs. Why Itunes WHY!!!
  • gocitizen
its troubles getting to market may actually help this score with sales. It's sort of an underground favorite among pirates. Arrrrr.
  • Sanfam
So buy just those two songs. Isn't that the entire benefit of iTunes?

One thing that irks me is that this is technically not the "complete" soundtrack, as it lacks a pair of tracks featured in the leaked release and has significant differences within some tracks versus those featured in the film itself. It has, however, been a staple of my ambient playlist since the initial leak (right along side Benn Jordan's Pale Blue Dot) and The Flashbulb's Soundtrack to a Vacant Life. My suspicion is that I'll pick up the CD when I get my first good chance I get. First time I heard that major theme, I was hooked.

Though show some respect to "Freezing Inside," one of my favorite tracks through its ability to carry through the story and mood of the scene.

Too bad the movie went from sixty-to-awful in a matter of minutes. :-p It could have been a real contender had they stuck with the original conflict and kept Pinbacker as nothing more than a distorted video of their prior failure.

For some reason, Itunes has a licensing restriction on some soundtracks that require you to buy the whole album, you can't buy a single song.
  • Love it. Even with the dialogue it's very minimal. Plus, remember Pulp Fiction's soundtrack? Every other track had dialogue and it was amazing!

    About fucking time.

Also, don't pirate it. Show these guys that it was worth the wait for the soundtrack.
  • David continuing your Danny Boyle love inn!!! but to be fair i have been waiting for this...
  • Other than those two tracks, I didn't think the film warranted a soundtrack release. This digital release is fine, but I'm not interested as like I said, the soundtrack wasn't astounding to me.
  • Wait until the album hits Amazon's mp3 store. You're allowed to buy individual tracks there.
  • tmill
I think this entire soundtrack is amazing. and, the weird thing is, if you use the newer itunes visualizer, its sort of hypnotizing. LOL, the two fit well together for some reason.
  • tmill
btw, my version is missing the 2 songs you mention, there is no dialogue, and there are 20 tracks not 19. so idk. kinda weird. it's not from itunes obviously.
  • God did I love that movie. I'll gladly get the soundtrack just to remind me of that movie. :)

It would appear that the release of this soundtrack has been marred by a few things
-Was released at 128kbps (i find if people are going to pick this up 2 years after the fact, they are going to want AT LEAST CD quality. At this point why not just record a live performance on a hand held tape recorder and release it that way...)
-ONLY on Itunes (can't stand buying my music from there anymore unless Im forced to) I would own this right now if it had been released digitally on Amazon
-Was released almost 2 years after the movie was released
-Being sold as album only (I'd buy the whole thing, so this isn't really a concern of mine)
-According to some who have heard a bootleg of the soundtrack, this release is still missing some material?

Regardless i am happy this is out, because SUNSHINE, although flawed, turned out to be one of the most visually pleasing and atmospheric films i saw in 07. Its a movie that i know love to watch, and can watch over and over again without getting bored of it. The Bluray transfer is gorgeous and the sound design is excellent as well. When i show this movie to friends (which i always do often) I like to lead in that you really just have to sit back and go with it. Its science fiction, and yes, some of the stuff here in the 3rd act isn't plausible, but if more people would have done this i really think this movie would have found stronger legs. I can't help but wonder what would have happened if a different studio would have gotten the rights to this movie other than FOX. I really would have loved to see someone like Warner Brothers or even Lionsgate release this. FOX generally tends to rush things while in production to get things to market faster, resulting in a less than perfect product (X3 anyone???), or they lose faith in something that they have purchased distribution rights to, and then release it with no support, no marketing, or any love for that matter.
So hopefully this will get a CD release, or digital distribution on amazon. And here's hoping that FOX's greedy ass doesn't fuck up Watchmen for the rest of us (I seriously wish the Golden Compass had been a fox film...)
