Fox Wants Keanu Reeves to Return for Speed 3?

In 2007, Dennis Hopper told The Guardian that he was set to reprise his role as Howard Payne in a third Speed film. Some people assumed it had to be a remake considering (spoiler warning) Hopper’s character died at the end of the first film. Well apparently now. A scooper on AICN has confirmed that a scriptment for Speed 3 is floating around Hollywood. Not only that, but the story features the return of Officer Jack Traven, the lead character played by Keanu Reeves in the original film.

But the real question is, will Fox be able to lure Keanu back? As many remember, Reeves decided not to return for the sequel, Speed 2: Cruise Control. The actor has since starred in The Matrix trilogy which made him the highest paid actor of all time. And with his passion project in the horizon, an Untitled Chef Project helmed by David Fincher, I’m guessing Reeves might need some convincing to come back for a third film. It would have to be one hell of a script.

A lot of people don’t give the original Speed film enough credit. It was actually a pretty kick ass high concept (heck, its the definition of high concept) action flick. I wouldn’t mind seeing another if the idea were right. But what’s the chances? It seems to me that the executives at Fox are looking for ways to make some more money off of some of their established franchises, especially with talk of a Planet of the Apes prequel. Lets just hope they aren’t planning a Speed 3-D!

if 20th Century Fox thinks they can pull off a "Speed 3", than more power to them, especially after the disaster that was "Speed 2: Cruise Control". Also, when you think about it, a "Speed 3-D" might not be a bad concept if Fox doesn't screw it up.

Dennis Hopper character survived his head being knocked off? Please., please.

I think the first film Speed was great, very intense and creative action flick...the second sucked...a third, would probably suck even harder.
  • This sounds like a cash grap but it might work. They need to somehow mix the two storylines from the other two movie together to be the plot of the 3rd. I know the 2nd one sucked big time but if they use it to make this one better it will work.
  • At least this idea isn't as bad as trying to make a prequel to Planet of the Apes. Or, making another Beverly Hills Cop or Lethal Weapon film.
  • Reeves was lucky not to do Speed 2. Who's dumbass idea was it to set it at sea. oes it go faster than a bus? Yes. Can you tell? Hell no! How much more boring can you get?
  • "try telling an Alien story that isn't a mockery of the first 2"
i think thats why this was included in the post
  • i heard they are using family guys script, where the bomb is on an iceberg.
  • NO NO NO! Stop right now with or without Reeves..

They have had it on land on sea I think the only place they could do it would be in the air.
    SPEED 3: CO PILOT
  • Hell no! Does Fox really think this is a good idea? I don't think Keanu's at the point in this career where he needs to revisit his old roles. In fact, the only role that might be worth revisiting would be Ted Theodore Logan.
  • The first "Speed" was a badass action movie.

The concept of the villain somehow still being alive after that violent "death" is just retarded. I'm not even that interested in seeing Keanu's character again, and if so, Sandra Bullock would totally inplausible as a character, considering the events of the craptastic sequel.

    Ugh...
  • Lol to the first comment, that would be cool..actually. I would (maybe) go see it if they go on with it. Speed (1) was one of my first action movies growing up, I loved it. I felt the thrill, I was excited. I was at the edge of my seat. I didnt bother seeing #2 because Kenau wasn't in it..so lets hope this works out.
  • Fox should just stop trying to make movies already.
  • Speed = Awesome...Speed 2 =, wait, they made a second one??? O yeah, I remember, it was on some boat...and it sucked...I loved the first Speed, I hope Keanu Reeves doesn't waste his time with this...I'd rather you sequel to Point Break...

Doing with Keanu and Bullock and without Hopper and have it take place on the moon.

  • i hope this film takes place on a wave runner in a public swimming pool
  • This better be some Meta-Hollywood type stuff.

"If you drive slower than 55, we'll greenlight Speed 3."
  • "I saw this in a movie about a bus that had to *speed* around the city,
keeping its *speed* over fifty. And if its *speed* dropped, the bus
would explode! I think it was called... 'The bus that couldn't slow
    down.'"
  • Bring it on! I love the original, pure popcorn entertainment. If they can get Jan DeBont on board (and let's face it, he'd be gagging for a good gig), and Keanu, I might actually go to the cinema and watch it

They already have a teaser site up for the project! Lets just hope Keanu decides to come back!

note to Fox - get a clue.

...and if you want to reboot something, try telling an Alien story that isn't a mockery of the first 2. You know, like maybe a prequel to Aliens? Nope - too easy, right?

dudes! like my new film Speed 3 : CAREER CRASH, is about me siging up for a another career killer film. in this film, which is like totally cool, i take a drive with a film producer and we, like, drive down the street! but the twist is, he wont let me out of the car until i agree to sign on for , like, crappy remakes of classic films, sequels to films nobody cares about, chick flicks, and other talent wasting vehicles! oh man, it's so awesome! we like dodge dogs in the streets as i totally try to write my name on a million dollar contract! like i'm in films for the craft...dudes! it's about par-taying and rocking in Dogstar!!! ( air guitar here )
  • gocitizen: hate to rain on your post dude, but arent avp 1&2 both prequels to alien and aliens?

I also can't wait for the day fox realises that just because you have the rights, doesn't mean you have the right...

"Do you want to see another Speed movie with Keanu Reeves in the lead?"

    Hell YEAH!

This is about the awesomest news I've heard in a long time. Speed was like a Swiss watch. Action movies had gotten so bloated by then, but Speed stripped it down to its bare essentials, showing us the moving cogs and gears. It was a lean textbook action movie and the cocky yet earnest Jack Traven is one of best action heroes.

Speed 2 was a huge disappointment. Not only was it a too bloated typical mess action movie, but it threw away the lean-mean-machine aspect, and yes Keanu, of the first film. Empire Magazine still rates Speed and Jack Traven as one of the greatest underrated action movies and heroes of all time. I would LOVE to see them back *IF* it had a great, lean script too.
  • Very well put. Pretty much spot on to how I feel about it.
  • or astronaut...
  • Hey look Fox wiping their ass with their own franchises. What's new!
  • Isabel
I am not a big fan of action movies, but i saw Speed about 6/7 times. Partially because of Keanu and because i did actually liked the movie. I'm not sure if it makes sense a Speed3. It has to be a very good come back story of Jack Traven, otherwise i don't think that Keanu will agree. And Sandra Bullock will not make any sense on this one.
  • How about Speed 3: In Space.
  • I honestly think this should be part of your new "Worst Idea Ever" installments.

Keanu turned down a hefty 15mil payday for Speed 2, because he wanted to tour with his (awesome) band "Dogstar".....
So let's do the math,,, Keanu made over 150 million during the Matrix films + another 100+ million for all the Constantines and Day the Earth took a shit, whatever.....

So he's worth over (let's just assume) 250 million dollars, he can pick and choose any film he wants, and the retards at FOX think they can wooooo him back with a good Speed3 script. Hahahahahahahahahaa!!!!!!!

    Jan de Bont. !!!
    Hahahahahhaahaahaaaaaahhaackk

FOX you are the dumbest, lamest, most likely to fail studio I've ever read about..... Paramount comes in as a close second.....
With Sony and WB at 3 and 4.

Now Greenlight X-Files 3 and let's bring on that alien invasion.......
  • wow i was just watching speed yesterday.one of my favorite movies i say yes with a speed 3
  • jamie
    he won't do it
  • Keanu has already stated in an interview the other day that he was not interested. No one has asked him either.
  • "... I think it was called, 'The Bus That Couldn't Slow Down'."
  • John
If they're gonna do this, they should do a completely different story. No more bombs on buses or boats...no more bombs in general or if you want to use bombs just don't make it the key plot in the story. You can go many different ways with this, you can create a whole new story.
