David Fincher in Page Six

The New York Post’s Page Six today has an item on The Curious Case of Benjamin Button director David Fincher that claims that his “imperious ways”are getting on the nerves of Paramount employees:

We are working our asses off trying to get Oscar nominations, and he is so abusive that it’s crushing,” said an insider at Paramount. “Whatever we do, it’s not enough.” After an LA screening, Fincher was rude to John Goldwyn, who was running Paramount in the early ’90s when the movie … was first in development. After Goldwyn congratulated Fincher, “he hit Goldwyn in the chest with his hand and hurt him and said, ‘That’s for you, for not greenlighting the movie when you had a chance.’ ” … Our insider said, “If we never hear the name David Fincher again, it will be too soon.”

This isn’t exactly news as Fincher’s supposed “abrasive” behavior has been well documented in years past. But hey, strong artists sometimes rub others the wrong way. From what I understand, Fincher and Paramount have officially made up after feuding over the Ben Button running time, and last I heard, Heavy Metal is back on at the studio. Fincher’s Chef project starring Keanu Reeves was also just set up at the studio, so its interesting that a Paramount insider has picked this time to “speak up”.

  • I don't understand the argument that "artists" are allowed to be "abrasive". Look at Christopher Nolan - he makes the biggest movie of the year and at the same time is always a perfect gentleman.
  • Delta Assault
Well, I already wanted Dark Knight to win Best Picture. This just reinforces that.
  • Patchesou
Well, considering he was only attached to the project in the early 2000s, this is just bullshit.
  • Zinc
Good, good... Make the path for Slumdog clearer...
  • Whoever decides to work with Fincher needs to just give him what he wants. Everyone will win in the end.

GO DAVE! Good for him. Screw those greedy, phoney, zero talent, parasitic cocksuckers. They should be beaten more often.

The reason why I care about the feud between Fincher and Paramount, it's because I want to see the best of Fincher. I think it's not very important for all of us to know about emotional et drama event around the production of a movie, we just want to see the movie, right?

But ahhhh, I really laught about Fincher punch another man in the guts. For no reason! Maybe I miss some moral lesson, but from my seat, it's a really funny situation!
  • Oi Vey
I've heard that Fincher is pretty crazy..that's from what I've heard from a friend within the 'biz'. But I don't think Fincher's zaniness is as well documented as Jame Cameron or better yet, David O. Russell.
  • "That’s for you, for not greenlighting the movie when you had a chance."

That sounds pretty sincere to me. He was doing Fincher a favor. It's facetious, but honest.
  • Chad
Uh, yeah... anyone should know better than to post "news" from the NY Post.
  • "After Goldwyn congratulated Fincher, “he hit Goldwyn in the chest with his hand and hurt him and said, ‘That’s for you, for not greenlighting the movie when you had a chance.’”

I hope that true. Because it only makes me love the guy even more. If people think that's "abusive" then Kubrick would be considered Ed Gein today.
  • Totally agree. It's great he's actually defending himself & the movie in a way. And that employee needs to realize it will NEVER be enough until Ben Button wins an Oscar.

I'd much rather he abuse someone whose ass is being kissed by everyone else than abuse an employee or other people that are much easier to push around. i guess he could do that too and that would be worse, but who knows.
  • It annoys me when I read about succesful people being dicks. Michael Mann is my favorite director and he appears to suffer from the dick fever as well. When it comes to the art of film though I guess you just have to accept it if you want to work with the guy. I mean musicians, painters, designers, actors, etc. at the level of these people are usually eccentric or abrasive.. just goes with the territory I guess.
  • "We are working our asses off trying to get Oscar nominations..." This kinda bugs me. I mean, I understand how important the Oscars are to studios, but I always felt/assumed that if you invested tirelessly in ensuring the film was everything it needed to be and told the story correctly, awards would follow... As apposed to tweaking the film to ensure it is Oscar worthy. And I'm glad Fincher is doing what he needs to get the results he wants. That's what a director should be doing, even after production.
  • I dont care who you are there is no need to be a Dick to people...
  • dude made fight club they expected not to be hit at least once?
  • Why is Marc Forster a hack?
  • Lono
Some people deserve it. Those who are dismayed by Fincher's behaviour have obviously never had a passionate vision, or had to struggle and suffer to create anything in their lives. Just like these studio jerks who think they have it hard sitting at their desks on the phone all day in between racketball, massages, and happy hour and then try to tell the people who do the actual work how to do what they already know how to do. I'm sure there is more to this story than we are hearing. But I'd bet he had good reason. I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often.

It's difficult to work with these kind of personalities. You have to either choose to walk away or find if you can deal with it. There is no in between. If you have any kind of independent spirit, you will not like working with these people. Trust me.
  • finchers a pimp
  • lol
  • AlexanderSupertramp
Someone's being a dick in Hollywood? Shocker.
  • bob
i cant believe there are people on here defending some producer.
  • What's being a detective have to do with this story?
  • haha, you haven't seen enough behind-the-scenes stuff about him then.
  • I think the story of him hitting and hurting Goldwyn can be taken with a grain of salt. It could very well have been a back handed smack, which may have or may not have really hurt. That one statement can easily be taken out of context. If Fincher is a little abrasive then so what? A lot of people, especially creative people, are not always easy to work with.
  • Ahahahaha
  • Dude has an edge.

But yeah, his movies consistently run too long.
  • Dude has an edge.

But yeah, his movies consistently run too long. I like his work, but I can still recognize its flaws.
  • Just what I was thinking...haha!!!
  • Fincher is awesome.
    And probz wouldve been joking.
    he is awesome.
    DONT DIS HIM BRUDDA!
  • Mikey M
Fox was shitty to him when he did Alien 3. So why does he turn around and shit on someone else?
    Do unto others....
  • If Fincher is temperamental, thats because most people in Hollyood are so full of their own crap that when a person with artistic integrity comes along and doesn't bow down to the hype, they consider them difficult and arrogant.

Given that there is only one Fincher and most of the 'filmakers' out there are hacks (i'm looking at you Marc Foster), let's actually go to the cinema and watch Benjamin Button and show that we actually support the dude.

I mean SAYING that you are a Kevin Smith fan and actually going to see Zack and Miri are two different things.

if it's a financial hit, they will all be best buddies.
  • No shit.
  • Vince Moreau
In a similar vein, interpersonal relationships with people on set and in the industry are an essential part of the business. From what I've heard from below-the-line talent, Fincher's a massive screamer on set. It's great if you have a vision, but you're running into roadblocks of your own creation if you're an impatient, impassioned dick on the set day in and day out.
  • Steve
It's Fincher. You don't fuck with Fincher.
  • an attempt to be funny? Chuck?
  • Wow, David Fincher is actually an a**hole. Big surprise.
  • "And I'm glad Fincher is doing what he needs to get the results he wants. That's what a director should be doing, even after production."

Hitting other people in the chest?
  • It's why I don't have a problem with it. I don't blame passionate directors becoming very hard-lining people. Especially when the studio tries to fuck with their work constantly.

I'm surprised Ridley Scott hasn't shot up the place, since every release of his always gets cut up to shit by some suit.
  • Danny B
He shoulda cockpunched the stupid prick. All movie execs deserve it without exception, on any day of the year.
