Television Spots: Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino

Warner Bros has begun to air television spots for Clint Eastwood’s Grand Torino. In the movie, Eastwood plays a disgruntled racist Korean War vet named Walt Kowalski, who sets out to reform his neighbor, a young Hmong immigrant teenage neighbor (played by newcomer Bee Vang), who, as part of a gang initiation, tried to steal Kowalski’s prized possession: his 1972 Gran Torino. Walt ends up confronting prejudices that have isolated him.

I think this film has the potential to be an Award season sleeper. I’m still waiting for someone to create the super obvious video mash-up using footage from this film and Batman Begins/The Dark Knight. As always, tell me what you think in the comments below.

Gran Torino will be released in limited theaters on December 12th 2008.

Those television spots make me think Clint Eastwood would make a great older Bruce Wayne if someone made a movie from Batman Beyond.

We need more people like Clint
  • As his last acting role this looks like a relatively simple premise. But, if anyone goes into a town and cleans it up it's Eastwood.
  • Eastwood's Lawn
A Clint Eastwood movie released in December being an awards season "sleeper"? That's an oxymoron, my friend. WB is already actively campaigning for it. ANY Eastwood movie these days is considered awards bait, I don't care if it's about space zombies. This is not flying under anyone's radar in Hollywood awards circles.

This looks bland and conventional. The acting in particular is hard to watch. How is anyone convinced this has awards potential? Just because of Clint? I hate to say it, being a big fan, but Clint has made some bad films.

    "I'm Batman"
  • clint's movies are usually all kinds of awesome but these spots and trailers really aren't convincing me. i hope i don't walk out of the theatre shaking my head in disbelief....

Clint Eastwood voice is perfect for a Batman Begins/The Dark Knight mash-up he should play a old batman in the next movie lmao
  • I am always interested in seeing what Clint has to offer.. For me he always makes pretty solid movies..
  • It would be great to see Eastwood in Dark Knight Returns.
  • I am with you on this one, this film is flying low on my radar. I don't deny the quality of his movies, but sometimes they just aren't as good as they are made out to be. I am a fan, but am having trouble getting pumped for this movie.
  • After seeing Changeling I realized that it is certain that Clint Eastwood will make a good film every single time. It is when the content is of interest to you for whatever reason, you prefer action or drama or comedy, etc. that Clint's movies are grandslams. I'm done reading about Gran Torino and will avoid any other promotional material because all it will do is spoil something that I'm already 100% certain to see in the theaters.

    'i finish things. that's what i do...'

    quotable as all get-out!

  • Actually it's Chuck Norris. Eastwood can be his sidekick, or be side-kicked by Chuck Norris, whichever comes first.
  • Movies about race always strike a familiar nerve with viewers - but it has to be handled right. Something about this is screaming Daytime TV Movie to me.
  • Although I love the deep and meaningful Clint Eastwood, I can but help yearn for another and final chapter in the Dirty Harry franchise. Sure, Harry would be in a retirement home now, but would that stop Det. Callahan, nope.

C'mon Clint give us Harry, or at least a film with a monkey

Anybody that don't like Eastwood, meet me at McDonalds parking lot. I finish things, that's what I do!
