Geoff Johns to Retell Superman’s Origin

In the 2006 film Superman Returns, Bryan Singer chose not to retell Superman’s origin story. I mean, heck, we’ve all seen the original Richard Donner classic, right? Newsarama reports that DC Comics will be releasing a six-issue stand-alone series called Superman: Secret Origin, which will retell the Man of Steel’s origin story. Geoff Johns and Gary Frank have been hired.

DC Universe Executive Editor Dan Didio compares Geoff’s new take on the origin story to that of John Byrne made in the 1980’s, stating that it will make the “same imprint now, for 2009 and past that.” The new take will take readers from Clark’s teenage years, through his first adventure with the Legion of Super-Heroes and into his arrival and introduction to Metropolis as Superman.

“We haven’t seen a modern day retelling of Clark’s first adventure as Superboy with the Legion of Super-Heroes, or the day Superman met Jimmy Olsen or the origins of Superman’s long time enemies like the Parasite and Metallo. More importantly, Clark Kent himself will be explored in his earlier years in a way I don’t think he’s ever been explored before. And freaking Gary Frank, one of the greatest Superman artists in history already, is illustrating it. Every cover, every panel, ever line,” Johns told Newsarama. “Unlike previous Superman origin stories, this will be told almost entirely from Clark’s eyes. We won’t be spending an issue on Krypton. We’ll be opening on one of Clark’s earliest memories as a kid and moving forward from there. This is his story of self-discovery and the world’s story of meeting Superman.”

I’m not sure what to make of the new origin story. Sounds like they are just trying to reflect some of the recent continuity changes with Infinite Crisis. I honestly don’t follow the Superman comics enough to know what I’m talking about in this arena, but it does seem a bit odd that DC would release a retelling when it appears, that Warner Bros is looking to completely relaunch the entire film franchise (speculation, not confirmed) complete with origin. As /Film commentor DDD points out, Geoff Johns made a pitch to WB for a Superman reboot and Richard Donner has been publicly saying that Johns should write the next Superman movie.

  • And here I was thinking that a new superman origins movie was coming out.
  • Adam
I don't know why Geoff Johns hasn't written any screenplays for WB. A superman, Flash, or Green Lantern movie written by GJ would not only be pleasing to most comic fans, but I'd be willing to bet a general audience would dig his writing.
  • DDD
hmm i didn't think of linking it to WB's reboot ideas. You guys would be wise to also point out Geoff Johns made a pitch to WB for the reboot and Richard Donner said Johns should write the next Superman movie.
  • Supeson
I remember MTV mentioning that, but I think it may have been a typo as they only had quotes from waid and Morrison
  • Can't wait. Johns and Frank are the best two people working on Superman today
  • EPIC BANANA
ohmygod so excited it's ANOTHER FUCKING ORIGIN STORY. Can't wait.
  • Superman is a tough character for me to associate with in movie form. Its easy in comics, but watching a man in tights in movie form should only be done at home in the dark on that one fetish site I visit.
  • I dont knw do we really want this maybe give it a break for a few yrs and try again...
  • Wow, enough.

Superman has become so stagnant, the last thing the franchise needs, regardless of medium, is another origin story.
  • i dunno guys, an origin story from clark's perspective has never been done before. could be interesting
  • I really love all of Geoff Johns' current DC work and I think he could write a really great Superman or Green Lantern screenplay.
  • Continuation of Smallville? It sounds EXACTLY like Smallville.
  • I think Peter doesn't like DC very much, I really hoped he did, so he would know the awesome Geoff Johns and his mighty pen!

Now seriously, I love everything that Geoff does and Gary Frank is most certainly the best Superman pinceller today. I don't think he (Geoff) is going to retell the story by changing it, but by doing the same thing he did with GL secret origin, just telling what happen exactly but adding a few details and changing nothing from the canon. By the way, that clarification is for Peter, and I don't think it has anything to do with Infinite Crisis.

I would love it if WB hire Geoff to write the screenplay for the new Superman reboot, very few people know Superman as well as Geoff, but I think WB is too stupid to actually do something so smart. The only smart thing they have done was hire Chris Nolan. And when I say smart I mean it from a Comic book movie stand point.

DC sure is good at coming up with boring stories, they should change the name to Dull Comics.
  • I have nothing against DC. I'm just more of a Vertigo guy. I like realism over fantastical super-villains, which makes me think I might not like John's re-imagining of Superman's origin story
  • DDD
saying Supes is boring is so overdone. Johns' recent work on Action Comics proves how interesting and awesome superman is. can't wait for the next movie too.
  • junior
Superman the character is not boring, DC's current take on him is.
  • GregoryV
    Sounds like Smallville on paper.

Someone should make Supreme Power into a film. That would be a nice big F--K YOU to the Superman origin.
  • Wow, I feel soo awesome, Peter replied to one of my comments :D

No but really, if you were to read anything from Johns I bet 20 bucks you'll like it. The guy is amazing!

I think Superman is a very delicate character because he is not very easy to make appealing, but Johns has been doing a great job with his run on Action Comics. I used to hate Superman before Johns, now I get anxious over the fact that I have to wait another month to read the next issue.

And trust me, if he is going to make a retell on the origin story there is a very good reason why. As I said, I don't he is re-making/re-imagining it, I think he is going to do the same thing he did to Green Lantern, he is probably just going to add a few details to what is already there.

By the way, on a side note, I love your website! It has become a religion for me to come here every single day! Keep the great job!

Who gives a flying fuck. Everyone knows who superman is, how he got here, kryptonite kills him, blah blah blah. How many gay ways do writers think we care about retelling crap that was perfect the first time and made the character legendary. Instead of "retelling" or "reimaning" shit - why don't you go out and write something original? Also, as for WB trying to 'reboot' Superman after Singer did an awesome job except for casting Lois with a boring, un-believable-as-a-pulitzer-prize-winning-reporter-or-a-working-professional-for-that-matter-other-than-a-hooker, "actress". Actually now that I think about it, I kind of hated Superman's son and thought they could've found a better Lex. Fuck it. Anyways, I still think Singer's the guy to do this.

i'm in, but why stop at just 6 issues? the superman titles could use a kick in the ass, and they absolutely should start on Krypton and go for a year or two. i love millar's idea of chronicling the very first day to the very last day of the man of steel. there aren't many comics brave enough to do runs like that; one of the reasons Y: the last man is a PIMP-ASS comic.

i have a theory that this whole batman r.i.p. thing is setting up a reboot or something for batman as well. it'd be cool to see a new tittle that starts in crime alley and takes us chronologically through bruce's wife - all the way to an 85(?) year old bruce as he passes away. a straight through story would be better than this abrupt snuff job we're getting right now, and it would be a revolutionary way to approach a comic legend. it should have canon guidlines, but it doesn't have to necessarily be canon itself.

    i dunno, just some thoughts.
  • jason B
btw, alex is right about geoff's amazing GL secret origin work. it was like, all of a sudden out of nowhere, the GL had some of the best stories in comics.

whatever this retelling or new way to bring in younger audiences turns out to be, let's just pray it doesn't turn out to resemble the abortion that is marvel's ultimate universe. i don't even know where to start on how how horrible all of that nonsense is, but that is NOT the way to introduce new readers to old legends. jesus christ those books are a joke.
  • Mando
Johns just wrote an episode for Smallville, called "Legion". I can't wait for that and i can't wait for this 6 issue series! he is awesome
  • @peter: you know vertigo is part of dc? but i get what you mean, the realism of vertigo sure beats superhero comics, dc or marvel, no question.
  • I was never a Superman "collector" when I was buying comics as a kid or teen. But as I've gotten older. I have come to really appreciate his mythos and his design as a character. He's pretty brilliant when you notice all the layers on this guy.

Donner made two great Superman films and the Singer version wasn't bad. But it really could have used a much more "speedier" end to the story-telling. I understand he respects the comics and the Donner films immensely. But he could have cut a lot of the homage stuff down and injected more of his Singer-style into it and given us a much more potent story. I'm not even talking about action, but more of a bigger push from the second Donner film. I will say one of the few things (the main thing) I didn't like about Singer's Superman, were the horrible cg effects. Sorry, but most, if not all the CG, was really weak "shit".

You gotta give this character an epic film or set of films and really work to show him off as best as humanely possible.
  • This sounds like a continuation of Smallville.
  • Wow, I feel soo awesome..
Enjoy creating new styles and upload it to www.uploaded.tv
  • Dr. Doc
why is Geoff Johns not writing screen plays for DC/WB?

he should be writing a Flash screenplay and Superman screenplay asap
  • We've seen this, it's called Smallville and before that Superboy. Move on to Metropolis and give me a Superman that feels like he can beat the crap outta someone without internalising his feelings.

At least have him hit someone, anyone...even Jimmy,
