Movie Review: Transporter 3

What is it about Jason Statham that continues to make men and women alike into Statham apologists, regardless of how crappy his films get? I first remember enjoying Statham in his wise-cracking role in Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and have since seen him transformed into an unlikely action hero. Statham’s role choices haven’t been great (e.g.War, The One, Death Race, etc.) but he always manages to embody an everyman quality that is relatable for men and irresistable for women. Additionally, his formidable charisma seems to constantly be crying out that, as an actor, he is better than these roles, that maybe he’s choosing them for fun and not because he has to.

The Transporter series of films represents Statham at his best but also at his most inconsequential. In these films we see Statham as a completely competent actor who can convincingly perform action scenes, but who never quite reaches respectability due to threadbare scripts and ridiculous set pieces. The first two Transporter films were low-budget mindless fun, each one grossing a tidy profit. Is the third one an enjoyable romp too? Or does it suck all the fun out of its basic premise?

Transporter 3 has ex-special-forces-soldier-turned-driver Frank Martin (Jason Statham) being forced back into his transporting role after a job he tried to pass off to a colleague (David Atrakchi) goes bad. This time, the cartoonish bad guy, aptly named Johnson (Robert Knepper), is concerned with a forcing a deal between an evil multinational corporation and the head of the Ukranian Environmental Protection Agency (Jeroen Krabbe). Martin’s task is to transport a nondescript package along with a mysterious woman, Valentina (Natalya Rudakova). To ensure his mission is completed, he is strapped with a unremovable metal bracelet that will explode if he gets too far away from his vehicle.

Transporter plots have never been the film’s strong points, and this one is no exception: The plot is full of holes and inconsistencies. Martin, who has established certain immutable rules for his transporter business, manages to break every single one again, just as he’s done in his previous films.  The question for me going into this film was, does the action deliver? The answer: Kinda. The action here is a lot of fun, and although the final set piece is over just a bit too quickly, there’s enough good stuff here to keep casual fans entertained.

However, the film never rises to what I would consider Transporter-style levels of outlandishness. In the first film, Frank Martin fought a team of bad guys while oiled up and using bicycle pedals to keep his balance. In the second film, Frank Martin drove his car off a ramp and had a crane grab a bomb off the vehicle’s underside, before landing perfectly upright. This film never achieves anything similar to those moments, despite the introduction of a Crank/Speed-like plot device in the exploding bracelet. Aside from a fantastically conceived and executed bicycle sequence (which you can briefly see in the film’s trailer), nothing here really wows. I strongly felt that the only way for this movie to succeed was to embrace its over-the-top nature, but unfortunately, it chose to go another way.

The biggest problem with this film is the completely pointless romantic subplot. The previous Transporter films have had Martin dabble with romance before (once with Asian actress Shu Qi and a brief flirtation in the last film with Amber Valetta). But they’ve always been pushed to the side in favor of Frank Martin fighting guys and blowing them up. This one spend a painfully long time on the relationship between Martin and Valentina, seemingly forgetting that romance is not why people go to see Transporter films. What’s more puzzling is that the script was written by series producer Luc Besson (with Robert Mark Kamen), who bafflingly doesn’t seem to understand what makes his series fun. The relationship never even approaches plausibility and every single beat of it is cringe-worthy. Due to the copious amount of time the film spends on ponderous moments between these two, the film never quite breaks out to achieve the momentum present in the previous films.

Despite their vast differences, it’s hard for me to avoid comparing this movie with Quantum of Solace, since they are both recent action flicks (If Quantum is not billed as such, it certainly features action prominently, both in the movie itself and in its marketing). Let me just say the following: The action in Transporter 3 is more enjoyable and far more comprehensible than that of Quantum. Furthermore, the bad guy in this film, played by Robert Knepper, is much more memorable (even if that’s not saying much), and delightfully self-delusional to boot (”I’m a pacificist,” he declares in one of the film’s final scenes, when earlier in the film we saw him throw a tantrum and shoot his own henchman in in the head). Overall, while Quantum might be a marginally better film, Transporter 3 is more fun and more satisfying as an action movie.

In the end, unless you’re a Transporter fan, there’s nothing here to really recommend this film, save a couple of unique set pieces. If you’re a Transporter fan, you should know that the film really isn’t as enjoyable or as action-laden as the previous two installments. But if all you really want is to see Frank Martin go on one more somewhat satisfying adventure, and I know how hard of an impulse that is to deny, then definitely strap in for Transporter 3.

It was an alright movie. I didn't like the girl though she was annoying.
  • "In the second film, Frank Martin drove his car off a ramp and had a crane grab a bomb off the vehicle’s underside, before landing perfectly upright."

This was a bright spot of the second movie for you? This exact sequence is when i stopped watching anything Jason Statham was in.
  • pop trash, i say!
  • For me, that was the moment when the series swore off reality and fully embraced its campiness. Not many series have the balls to do that. The Transporter series have always been a guilty pleasure for me, but "Transporter 3" was much more "guilty" and much less "pleasure."
  • I take pride it not ever seeing any of these films. Mainly because they look like retarded crap. And from the looks of the trailers and the reviews. It looks like I'm right.

Jason Statham and Sam Jackson should do a movie together called , "We Can't Say NO".

I've never watched a transporter films due to its consistent mediocre reviews. Bank Job with Jason wasn't half bad though.
  • Agreed, Bank Job was a shining moment in a sea of bad Statham films. But did you notice that he suddenly transforms into Frank Martin at the end when he starts beating up that old guy?
  • i never saw bank job, but your line here that reads "...when he starts beating up that old guy..." makes me want to rent it.
  • i know what you mean about justifying statham, even though he makes bad decisions for movies. i justify him all the time, and tell people to watch lock stock. and then i tell them he does it for fun, because hes such a nice guy.. its quite sad, because then another movie comes out, and im the one that looks bad.. like that 'in the name of the king' movie. that was terrible, even though he was ok. i still cant believe a mafia dude was the evil wizard.
  • In decided whether or not to see this money, I'd rather just go watch Snatch again.

"Overall, while Quantum might be a marginally better film, Transporter 3 is more fun and more satisfying as an action movie."

Are you kidding me?! Quantum is a substantially better film in every regard.

As much as i love Jason. I think the thing is this. He knows hes not a great actor but what people love about him is He does not give a fuck about his acting and just goes out and have fun doing movies bieing himself. Thats why i think everyone loves him!!!
  • I can't wait for the Australia Review. You should review australia. It's sooooo good! Might see it again tomorrow.
  • Although it didn't turn me off Statham completely. That scene for me was the exact moment I stopped caring about the Transporter series... like who does he think he is; James Bond?

    Nice review.

I really agree that since the Transporter films are totally ridiculous, the third should have just tripled the silliness.

They should have had him as the chauffeur for the President of the United States or something absurd. And [fill in absurd plot] he has to protect the President and get him to the [absurd plot details] before [big climax FWIW].

I mean, why not? Why try to make the character more real when he couldn't anymore unreal?
  • 6/10 is 2 points too many.

"The Bank Job" is a great old school caper flick that succeeds primarily becuase Statham doesn't act like over the top badass he plays in most of his films. "Lock Stock" is also another example of awesome Statham.
  • freemachine
First of all, 'Crank' was F'ing brilliant. Second, Statham proved that he has depth as an actor in 'London' (a very underrated film).
  • Im looking forward to this.
    Not out in Aus yet.
    =[
Also looking forward to Crank 2...
  • If that's the case then Uwe Boll should be given an Oscar for every film he has made.
  • Marco
To everyone who's seen this crappy flick, is it just me or is Statham's French cop sidekick Tarconi the worst part of this series? His French accent is so thick you can't understand 90% of what he's saying.
  • I find Jason Statham and his films thoroughly entertaining most of the time. The key is to not take things too seriously.
  • Dan
    HEY DAVID!!

Great review. I swear to God if I wrote a review it would read just like this, right down to the comparison with QoS.

Jason Statham is awesome in the same way that Christopher Walken is; that is to say people don't hold grudges against them for appearing in terrible movies because they themselves are so fun.
  • I saw the first Transporter and actually liked it but somehow never got around to seeing the second. I may have to watch that before I give this one a gander.
  • You swore off an actor because of that sequence?

Somehow I doubt Jason Statham had anything to do with that, other then sit in the car when they offered him the pay cheque.
  • "Brilliant" is the last word that should ever be associated with "Crank".
  • Statham is one of my guilty pleasure actors. There is something about him that is entertaining not matter how crappy it is. This will be a rental for me though.
  • OK, before the Statham apologists go too far, let's remember he began THIS year by starring in that cinema epoch "In the Name of the King" directed by Uwe Boll. I'm a fan of his, so don't take it negatively when someone does dare mention that Statham is willing to take whatever work comes his way -- quality not being necessarily a concern.

As for Transporter 3, it's a solid "Meh." It lacks the sense of fun of the first one and isn't as absurd as the second one. They did try to return it to the first movie's best elements (in Europe, battling nondescript bad guys, fights in dirty warehouses/chop shops, hot foreign chick), but it didn't quite get there all the way.

Maybe if they'd actually shown us a movie where he's on the job, actually following his rules and trying to avoid capture (and not getting double-crossed by his employers) it might have felt far more fresh and interesting.
  • I just don't see how you can NOT like Statham movies. Transporter 3 was just ridiculously awesome. I was considering passing on this, but then a few of my friends came over from out of the blue and we all went. I don't think I've had that much fun in a movie in a while. Actually, I'd say it's a "fun" movie to go see; you're not as interested in the plot as you are the hyperbolic action sequences. During the garage fight scene we were just like "HE'S KILLING PEOPLE WITH HIS CLOTHES!", as is the norm for Statham as Frank Martin. I can see why people would wait for the DVD release to see this, but it was great fun nevertheless.

Just got back form this and was pretty disappointed. I love the concept and the character more than any of his adventures and end up going to these films hoping for the best. Statham is the man but you can't help but think, as he's kicking through the motions, that he's better than this. He's awesome enough to deserve a successful franchise, it's just a shame it can't be a good one.

Bring on Crank 2 to save the day!
  • being rediculous is why i enjoy this type of rubbish.. Not great movies but just something to have on...
  • I actually enjoyed Death Race, probably because I shut off my brain and enjoyed the mindless escapist entertainment for an hour and a half, as it was intended. Something alot of you are incapable of apparently.

Its like an amusement park ride, there's nothing there intellectually, its just a cheap thrill.

Oh and did anyone ever see that piece of crap movie "London"? Statham was probably the only redeeming thing about that movie, and he didn't even have to hold a gun or fly through the air at any point. He just does alot of drugs in a bathroom, and he has hair in it.
  • "HE'S KILLING PEOPLE WITH HIS CLOTHES"

hahaha true story!!! This movie was hilarious. Especially when Statham and the girl talked about food with dramatic piano music in the background. That happened about 3 times. I DIE.
  • "Let me just say the following: The action in Transporter 3 is more enjoyable and far more comprehensible than that of Quantum."

David, your words rung out in my brain after seeing Transporter and I'm eager to respond. I found myself uninvolved, emotionally uninterested, and occasionally entertained with Transporter 3. The fight scenes in T3 are well done and visually interesting, as is Frank's bicycle pursuit, but the car chase is lazy, uninvolved filmmaking. The speed-ramping and camera work were snoozers. While there are enjoyable moments, T3 as a whole, in my internet opinion, in no way compares to Quantum in terms of action or story. The story motivated the action and camera work in Quantum, and the investment in story made the action matter, whereas T3's pieces were little less than set pieces [Not to say that Bond films are not set pieces, but they're motivated and executed better than here.] I'm an advocate of the first Transporter film, as well as a casual Bond fan, but Quantum's action is unhinged and visceral and directly relative to Bond's emotional state in the film. Martin's a badass, sure, and Natalya Rudakova's Valentina has freckles to die for, but I feel that Quantam, on all its merits, is a much more enjoyable and better film over all. The Transporter films are silly fun, as likely intended, but Bond isn't carved out to be merely "silly." I'd almost go so pretentiously far to say they're different in intent and execution makes them somewhat incomparable, and probably only owe the comparison due to their proximity to each other in the market.
  • I'll wait for it on DVD...
  • It's so good!i love the concept

  • best movie in 2008
  • that damn woman took up about 80% of the movie. she was so annoying and ruined the movie for me.
  • jasmine woodard
this movie was awesome better than all the otha action movies and the otha transporter1&2
  • Will B
i CAN NOT believe this movie is getting such apologetic reviews! I absolutely hated this one. I loved the first Transporter, I reallly enjoyed the 2nd (watched it 3 times and counting) and I enjoyed Crank. This film was just horrendous. The speed up, fast-cut editing was painful on the eyes, the set-pieces were super contrived and lame; as well as pointless. Bringing your car to a super genius who just says, whoops, there's one wired, you're fucked... COME ON!

I can honestly say Hitman was better than this.
