Could Buffy The Vampire Slayer make a comeback on the big screen? The Australian Herald Sun newspaper is reporting a new rumor that suggests the box office success of Twilight could have 20th Century Fox interested in a Buffy movie. And this is where the rumor gets a bit unbelievable. Apparently Joss Whedon has a screenplay already written, and ready to go.

I’m not saying that the idea is completely unbelievable, but it just seems a bit too coincidental. Especially considering that Season Eight of the series is currently being released in comic form. I’m sure that Buffy fans are already freaking out over the idea, and while I’m not saying it definitely isn’t going to happen, I would suggest that fans take a “wait and see” attitude.

Another big screen Buffy movie isn’t out of the question. After all, we’re talking about the same studio that brought The X-Files back to the big screen after being off the air for six years. One could argue that Fox would have learned their lesson with that release, which was made for over $30 million and grossed only $21 million domestically. But 20th Century Fox isn’t known for making smart decisions when it comes to movie and television properties.

Discuss: Would you pay to see a new big screen Buffy movie?

  • Isn't it funny how it all comes full circle. At one point in time, people were curious about that Buffy TV show they adapted from the movie...
  • Dr. Doc
it would depend on the trailer for me

to me, the show got really lame once they graduated high school
  • This needs to happen. As long as it's like the original movie and not as cheesy as the TV show.
  • I'm all for getting more work for Alyson Hannigan. Need me my Willow fix. ;)
  • It could always be Buffy vs. Twilight.
  • Klaw
    I would watch it. But I don't think it's a good idea.
  • If it looks good, and perhaps goes back to the original movie's style, I might go for it. Hey, I went and saw X-Files 2, which would've probably been a decent TV episode but wasn't that great of a movie. So if Buffy 2 looks decent, I might see it.

By the way, X-Files more than made its money back, with $67,682,478 worldwide. I know that still isn't considered "blockbuster success," but I wouldn't rule out Fox making another X-Files movie someday. I wouldn't rule out a Buffy 2 either.
  • No.
  • Damn. I twittered this to you last night.
  • dave
Funny thing is that in the comics the current Big Bad is called "Twilight".
  • not sure about that peter, but i do know one thing, and that is that it will definitely bring about the apocolypse, aka the end of all things
  • Please, for the love of god, let SOMETHING good come from those damn Twilight movie(s). I would much prefer a Angel: After the Fall movie about Los Angeles being transported into a hell dimension, but a Buffy movie would be fine too.
  • Grid Blyton
That would be pretty damn awesome
  • This would make a great thread in any forum: name at least 5 good decisions made by FOX in the last 50 years.
  • That's odd... I mean asides from vampires, there's no real correlation between Buffy and Twilight. The target audience and message that they're trying to convey are completely different, aren't they?

That said, I'd absolutely pay to see a Buffy movie and completely agree with krackajap: something good needs to come out of the twilight saga >.<
  • Tucker
I am confused as to why a Twilight film would bring about good results for a Buffy film. The target audiences are completely different.
  • Both involve teenagers and vampires, right? :P
  • Hopefully they do decide to make a Buffy The Vampire Slayer movie it defiantly would kick-ass! Seriously who wouldn't want to see a bunch of hot slayers fighting the forces of evil?
  • Tucker
Hah, I think that is as the extent of studio reasoning sometimes.
  • Australia is the number one source for movie news =P
I hope this is good, Ive never watched Buffy...
and hope to never watch Twilight...
  • derek
I don't think its going to happen but now i'll be googling new buffy movie for the next 9 months
  • monstereatsbigots
Imagine Buffy with a Hellboy II sized $80 million budget? Ooh, the possibilities.
  • Emm
lmao, thats hilarious. I've been a fan of both buffy and angel. Angel of course better, I dont know though, these things always turn out to be horribly corny and never true to the original. I'm sure SMG is gettin a lil old to reprise as well as David's on bones. ( i doubt they'd go that route anyways). But if Joss is writing it, there's still hope!
  • AlexanderSupertramp
He could go all George Lucas and do away with the comic series (it sucks anyway - both of them. Blegh.). I wouldn't be opposed to the idea as long as everyone we know and love were involved, the comics were ignored and there were more vampire slayage.
  • Passing on the Clone Wars animated series and film.
Passing on the Space US pilot.
    Passing on Vantage Point.
    Passing on The Sopranos.
    Passing on The Boondocks.
  • Burt Nelson
    No.
  • Hickok
Sarah Michelle Gellar isn't returning in her role. Josh Whedon has made this clear several times. So there won't be any Buffy movie.
  • If we're talking bringing back tv shows in film form any new news on Veronica Mars?
  • pretty good !!!!!!!

Just got to whedonesque.com because if there is ever a Buffy movie in the works, Joss will announce it there. Easy as that. SMG will return if Joss has a good idea for it... and of course he would because he is Joss Whedon. I will just wait for him to post on there when he says, "oh yeah, and i'm working on a little thing called Buffy for the movies... didn't I already write this before?" in his hilarious jokey way.

    Joss is god.
  • Can Fox please ignore Buffy? Yes, I loved it too. I consider myself to be on of the non-insane members of the Whedon cult. Angel was classic. But seriously... if Whedon is going to make anything right now besides Dollhouse, can it please be season 2 of Firefly or Serenity 2? Pretty please? With a cherry on top?
  • i would rather see another serenity.
  • I can only think of the decision to make Serenity. Which reminds me, would fox be willing to make a Joss Whedon movie when you consider the performance of Serenity?
  • Buffy has a slightly older fanbase than tweens, though. And it isn't 80% girls either.
  • They're actually quite different... While Buffy was never really about the vampires, I kind of get the sense that Twilight is largely about... vampires. (and some sort of love story too, albeit a slightly creepy one. ;) )

Despite SMG's statements, I do think it's not totally off the table, even if it is on the far end of a very long table. After all, I never expected Gillian Anderson to come back to Scully.

    Come home, Sarah!

But Angel would be better. The series finale set up for a movie in a very big way. That, however, seems even more unlikely. Plus, we'd have to lure David Boreanz away from the critically acclaimed, fan-loved masterpiece that is Bones. (What, the show's not that good? My mistake...)
  • I agree with that and the underlying message between the two properties is also largely different. Buffy was more about her coming-of-age and dealing with metaphorical monsters that plague a teenager/young adult's life whereas Twilight (I'm almost ashamed to admit that I wasted 2 hours of my life on it) was, for the most part, a huge propaganda piece for abstinence.
  • Count me out.
  • In the wake of Twilight it doesn't surprise me that a rumor for a Buffy movie would sprout. The only way I would be on board is if everyone came back and in the first 5 minutes Dawn is killed.
  • A.J.
I'm not shocked at all that Whedon has a script ready. Gellar, for some reason, failed at her movie career and is headed back to TV. As always "if the script is good" she'll come back.
  • Anti-Septic
This is pointless, Hasnt the Buffy series said and done everything that could be imagined? What more could be said with a film? An Angel movie would pretty much be out of the question, David Boreanz is at least co-Producer of the (Bones) show now and besides, he never got along with Josh Whedon. Yes, its a little known fact that Boreanaz didnt really get along with Whedon because Boreanaz wanted more control of his character "Angel". Whedon never allows any variations from the scripts he puts out, he is very controlling and David did not like that.

So for you Angel fans, get over it. It would never happen, Boreanaz is peaking now and has no plans to ride Whedon's coat tails ever again.
  • jj gonzo
The only TV show "movie" that is really worth making and waiting for is ...
    HEROES the movie!!!!
  • Hell fuckin yes, a Buffy movie would be awesome. But a Angel After the Fall movie would be even more Amazing. Angel has more action, while Buffy had more..."other stuff"

Its a toss up about what would be better a Angel or Buffy movie. Or maybe just incorporate Angel AtF into the Buffy movie perhaps?

Either way, I'd pay to see it a dozen times or so.
  • MikeyM
A Buffy movie would be good but only if they could combine Buffy and the Angel series. They should be together.
  • buffboy
I would die, and go to heaven and then come back.. man thatd make life
  • So pretty much....they're just going to make a bunch of 2 hour long tv episodes and show them in theatres to make 500 million bucks off of people's ignorance? Yeah? Thought so.
  • Chelsea
    I completely agree.
I've always loved Angel better than Buffy (*pretentious buffy elitists everywhere gasp*).
    And I really hate Twilight.
But I would definitely be ok with a Buffy movie.
  • Lucy
I would love to see a Buffy film, but I would be far more interested in Joss adapting "Fray" to the big screen, or just screen.
  • HOLLY
I think that they should make a Buffy film i think that buffy would be a better movie then Angel because Buffy had many more elements to life then Angel did Buffy had love friendship, and many other things while kicking ass as a slayer of the night! AND BY THE WAY SMG IS ONLY 31 TOM WELLING IF U KNOW WHO THAT IS IS 32 AND HES BEEN PLAYING SUPERMAN FOR 8 YRS. AND HES STILL A GOOD ACTOR!!
SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR ROCKS AT ANYTHING ANWYAS SO NO DOUT THE MOVIE WOULDNT BE GOOD!
  • Heather
    that would be completly amazing.
i would so go see it!
    over nd over again
    :D
  • Linda
I don't understand why Firefly is being compared with Buffy. Buffy lasted for 7 seasons till they decided it was enough. I don't think Firefly got that option.

So IF it they decide not to make a Buffy movie, which would be terrible and heartbreaking, the decision shouldn't be based on the fact that Serenity 'bommed'
(I do like Serenity, don't get me wrong.. have it on DVD)

I don't know, I just feel like we never had a proper goodbye, Buffy-wise.
I do agree that IF they make a Buffy movie, it should be a good story and not some meaningless picture to follow the 'Let's turn everything into a movie' trend.

Buffy's memory should remain as the definition of awesomeness..
