Movie Trailer: Tony Gilroy’s Duplicity

Ever since the fairly spectacular Michael Clayton, I’ve been eagerly awaiting Tony Gilroy’s next directorial project, Duplicity. Honestly, how could you not get excited about a film that reunites Closer stars Clive Owen and Julia Roberts, and includes Tom Wilkinson (who should seriously consider hitching his wagon to every Gilroy script), and Paul Giamatti? Clayton proved that Gilroy had the directing chops to match his screenwriting prowess—which is saying something given that he’s written all the Bourne films thus far.

Owen and Roberts play a pair of corporate spys who’ve fallen into a steamy relationship and devise the ultimate plan to rip off their respective employers—competing pharmeceutical companies run by Wilkinson and Giamatti. I love the energy from this trailer, and I’m glad to see that Universal has figured out the perfect way to sell this film. It’s unabashadly Oceans-esque, but that makes sense for something that seems to be a heist film at its core. Owen looks less broody than usual, Roberts less annoying, and Giamatti and Wilkinson just seem like they’re having a lot of fun hamming up their roles as the competing CEOs.

Watch the trailer in High Definition on Apple. Duplicity hits theaters on March 20, 2009.

  • I dont know about this. I'm not a fan of Julia Roberts.

It seems like Michael Clayton meets Ocean's XX, which just might be fantastic. If it has the smarts of MC and the wit of Ocean's, the sky's the limit. The cast is certainly promising, with Wilkinson, Giamati, Owen and Roberts.

Julia roberts is a good actress but dont care about her movies but michael clayton was in my top 5 or 10 of last year, so im going to see this.

Love Clive, love Julia. love Giamatti, love this type of film, love the writer, what else is there to say? Should be a decent film. Oscar? no...entertaining film? yes!
  • looks kinda boring to me. i dont think it helps that i have a fear of julia roberts mouth.. i do like the other actors though, all of which are great actors.
  • Not what I was expecting when I first hear about it, but with a cast like that, it's highly improbably the film will make any missteps. I'm there.
  • Looks like they've captured a strong Ocean's Eleven vibe. That could also just be the trailer. Looking forward to see where this one goes.
  • I dunno guys, I just can't watch Julia Roberts prance around in high heels for another fucking movie. Can't stand the woman.
  • Sues
Clive Owen in a lead role is usually enough for me, but this looks impossibly fun and entertaining. With this, Watchmen, and probably something I forgot, March is looking exciting.
  • Oi Vey
Hmmm this is a chance to see Owen as a MI6 Agent.......(cough James Bond)
  • Definately Oceans-esque, allot more light hearted then I was expecting. Still looks like it could be good, although I certainly was not blown away.
  • i dunno, i'm split on this too. the music and the way the trailer was cut makes it seem too much like a heist movie. but the actors and gilroy have me interested.
  • fanboy d
i love how clive owen isn't james bond, but WILL accept every spy role offered to him :D
  • Almost reminds me of the Brothers Bloom only not so quirky just more stylish. I liked the trailer, the acting looks tops. I'm not a fan of Julia but wouldn't mind seeing this.
  • Emm
very different from Michael Clayton. Trailer, hmm... nothing very spectacular so far, run of the mil a-lister flick to me.
  • ugh, looks sappy
  • It's mancrush day on /Film. Hugh Jackman? Josh Brolin? Clive Owen?
