Star Trek in IMAX

FirstShowing is reporting that JJ Abrams’ Star Trek will be converted for IMAX theaters when it is released on May 8th 2009. But with Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian, also an IMAX release, due only two weeks later, Trek won’t have too much time on the huge screen. And I don’t expect any special features to be announced (for instance, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is expected to have more than 20 minutes in 3D, and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen shot some action sequences using IMAX cameras) but Trek might be worth seeing in IMAX regardless. Especially with the big space battles which might out-Star Wars Star Wars.

I’m usually not a fan of the IMAX up-conversions, and in a post Dark Knight world, it almost seems like a rip off, but I have been reading up on the process and I’m starting to drink the kool aid. The up-conversion process eliminates additional film grain which is common in film print reproduction, providing an image much closer to the original negative. Also, the IMAX sound system is obviously much better. Just don’t sit too close.

Discuss: Will you see Star Trek in IMAX even though it doesn’t have any super added value features?

DOnt ever compare Star Trek to STar Wars. A Death Star would blow up the whole god damn Fleet!!! HEhehehehehe
  • You know, I saw the trailer before Solace and your statement about how the space battles might "out Star Wars Star Wars" may seem a bit outlandish but that trailer, on a huge theater screen, definitely gave that impression. If this is in IMAX, I will see it there just because of the sound that will be associated with the space battles. Abram's is amazing when it comes to sound detail. Lost, Cloverfield, and now Fringe have such an amazing array of sounds I can only imagine what a big budget film under him will have.
  • 'Will you see Star Trek in IMAX even though it doesn’t have any super added value features?' NO.
  • Nope I think not.

Of course I'll check it out on IMAX. Maybe we've been spoiled by "added value" but upconverts have always been far, far superior. Just remember Batman Begins.
  • I'm not surprised at this at all. It seems to me like they would do this to get on the Dark Knight bandwagon.

Alright that's what im talking about!
  • I'll probably skip this on the IMAX. It's not that the value added features are necessary to make it worthwhile on the IMAX (whether it be added content, 3D, or even just being shot with IMAX cameras); however, it might be necessary for those that aren't huge fans of the series. In fact, even though I've enjoyed the Harry Potter movies, I'd probably have stuck with the regular theater for that if it wasn't going to have the additional 3D content.

As for sitting too close: I was forced to sit in the front row for TDK (even with advanced tickets, I didn't get on line soon enough to avoid it), I didn't have a problem watching. Maybe it's just my IMAX, I wouldn't know, but there's still quite a bit of space between the front row and the screen.

I'm sorry pete but I prefer IMAX now after Dark Knight, only problem is the price.
  • Yes, I will see it in IMAX. As pointed out, Abrams' works generally pay a great amunt of attention to sound, and I'm looking forward to that, particularly during the high-energy scenes. This movie will rock my face off.

    Chris Pine even bigger. YUM.
  • I'd see it in IMAX if there was a god damn IMAX theatre here.

Very interesting. I would really see this on IMAX. The action packed scenes/effects will look amazing! I feel that TDK really amped up and impacted how studios view IMAX now.
  • Please for the love of god someone re-open the IMAX in Hawaii!

I'm no super fan, so If it doesn't have any special features specifically made for Imax, I will probably opt out and see it in reg theater. Save me a buck or two and my eyes as well.
  • i'll agree with you there. The one space battle scene i remember from the trailer looked a lot like the Battles from Ep. 3.

mmm, not sure it removes alot of grain, I've seen quite a few upscaled Imax films and to me it looks as though nothing has been removed, colour and detail are improved huge amounts but i can't see anything else different....Transformers still had alot of grain in the picture and i was slightly dissapointed by that. but when you see close ups of the robots the picture was stunning and definately better than the general release.
  • Peter - "Especially with the big space battles which might out-Star Wars Star Wars."

You've got to be kidding. By principle, you cannot beat something simply by copying it. Blatant ripping off automatically = imagination and filmmaking failure
  • its interesting

Will definitely see that in IMAX, not sure what to expect though - my last one was Space Station (...) even missed Dark Knight since there is no IMAX here.
