A few weeks ago, Entertainment Weekly reported on the details of the Terence Howard/Don Cheadle Iron Man 2 debacle, saying that, due to the problems with Howard for the first film:

…when Favreau and screenwriter Justin Theroux went to map out the sequel they found themselves minimizing Howard’s story line. Once Marvel learned that Favreau was thinking of curtailing the role, the studio went to the actor’s agents with a new and drastically reduced offer[.]

Now, according to MTV Splashpage, we learn that screenwriter Theroux has unequivocally stated that the Rhodes’ character was not scaled back for the sequel:

All that stuff that was in the “EW” article…I don’t know. I can only tell you what I know which is that from a writing standpoint we didn’t do anything differently [with the character]. It’s not like we were sitting there going, we need less of this or that. We just approached the characters and the story on their own terms.

Theroux also confirmed that Rhodes will in fact be integral to the plot:

I can’t really speak to the plot stuff and all the rest of it but Rhodes is completely present in a very strong and big way…He’s COMPLETELY present.

There you have it, folks: We’ll be seeing a lot more of Mr. Rhodes, the army man who becomes War Machine, albeit with an infusion of Cheadle this time around.

  • That's good and bad. Though Cheadle is excellent, i will miss what Howard brought to the table.

Howard's performance reminded me of a cardboard cut out, hopefully Cheadle will be able to animate the character a bit more...there I said it

    Still not diggin Cheadle.
Sounds like Howard was screwed over by more than one factor.

Going to skip opening weekend in protest.
  • Terence Howard missed the point. Probably not the best time to be picky, I'm sure he didn't expect the studio to hard-ball him so hard. It's Robert Downey who can play hardball and win. Imagine if he said 'fuck you, pay me double...'. They would find a way. Thankfully, he's not like that.
  • Ahh yes, one of the many blessings of not adding '2' or 'The Return' or any number of sub-headings to a film. It was the first Batman to not have the word Batman in the title, and in no way did it ever indicate it was a sequel. And rightfully so.

Am I the only one that is tired of reading about this crap, seriously who cares? You know, maybe if they had replaced RDJr. or Favreau that might be worth all this attention but a role with all of 3min of screen time? Get over it.

    This is retarded.

Theroux says nothing of importance. He doesn't know about the EW article info., he can't speak to plot information and they approached the story and characters on their own terms.

Not a goddamn iota of information.
  • I don't think we will see War Machine until the third movie.
  • Indeed. Someone IS lying. But who!? <.<
  • I liked what Howard did too.
  • i like continuity. i dont see cheadle as a colonel. hes more of a lawyer, doctor type maybe. and i dont know if cheadle will have the same chemistry that howard had with rdJR. too bad
  • Am I the only person who feels that continuity isn't all that important? I mean it's a movie. Everyone understands that. Anyone with a functioning brain should be ale to understand that and look past it.
  • You're not the only person. It's not as if they recast RDJ. Sure, Terrence was fine in the role, but he wasn't such a presence that I feel it's going to ruin anything to have Cheadle take over the role.
  • You won't know till the movie comes out. Cheadle is an excellent actor and I think he'll surprise those who have doubts. If he doesn't....well...we'll all feel the let down next year.

    AMEN, CHEADLE ftw
  • War Machine Baby! I guess Howard is just really hard to deal with.
  • This Article can be summed up in a very simple sentence, Marvel realized the shit job that Howard did and they said okay you get paid what your worth and Howard decided that he was worth more , so marvel went and dumped his ass and got a better more qualified actor for the role.

    Can I get an Amen.

And a big fat Cheers to Theroux for calling the Bullshit, I always liked that guy.

I think this move is possibly connected with Avengers. If war machine is in that movie (which he could be depending on what version of the avengers they use), then they have to keep budget down. They already have Downey, Samuel L. Jackson, possibly Ed Norton (although they could do all CGI for the hulk), and whoever plays Thor and Captain America. And possibly Gwyneth Paltrow, and Liv Tyler plus other superheros that may still be added.

Avenger's isn't going to be cheap and if Rhodes is in that movie, they definately need to cut costs somewhere, and the average movie fan probably won't even realize that he is supposed to be the same character. There were tons of people that didn't even realize the Dark Knight was a sequel.
  • Yeah, I'm thinking it had everything to do with money. Maybe Howard wanted a bigger bump in his check and Marvel wouldn't comply.
  • Cheadle's a weasel. He should have refused the role and made a political stand.

How can he do another brother like that. I guess the only color he identifies with is green.
