I Am Legend Prequel is Now a Sequel?

According to a scooper at AICN, the I Am Legend prequel might no longer be a prequel. The original idea was for the film to take place “several years before the original film” and follow Will Smith’s character Robert Neville as he fails to save a small pocket of survivors. I’ll admit, I was never a huge fan of the prequel idea, because we know where it will eventually end up. But Warner Bros was insistent in making the movie with Will Smith, and that was the idea he developed. But now rumor has it that the film will be a direct follow-up to the original film. Problem is, [possible spoiler alert] Smith’s character is killed at the end of the first film. So how would this be possible?

  • It would be possible if they go with the alternate ending of the movie, which I thought was much better, and was exactly what I was thinking should happen while watching the movie in the theater. The "real" ending made no sense.

    good point, well I guess its simply the studio wanting to cash in on Will smith yet again. i wasn't very big fan of I Am Legend, they better do something about those horrible CGI monsters. It will make $$ anyways.

    I haven't read any of graphic novels books, i wonder if there's anything in there?

    They absolutely ruined the first one; they will ruin the next one. Perhaps it's just me, but if they stuck with the source material, the film could have been Oscar-worthy. I like Will Smith, but they should have stuck with an older, bearded man who had nothing to do with the spread of the disease.

    why don't they just re-release the film with the alternate ending that would then leave it open for him to be in a sequel. Movies are being rereleased all the time now in theaters and if they even had will smith be willing to shoot added scenes it would I think make people be willing to go see it more. If anything though I would not mind if they made a prequel that was the start and spread of the disease up until the point where his family is taken. I think that would have been a great movie if they had done that as the prequel. And the movie with that alternate ending actually is enjoyable and I really liked it. The one shown in theaters was just hollow to me and was so tripe.

    I would be absolutely fine if they used the alternate/better ending. it might confuse several million people, but that ending just makes more sense. except for the fact that all of the bridges were destroyed...so how were they driving off the island?

    Neville didn't create a cure, as he created a clone of himself and injected into the lady. She then becomes an exact copy of him, and thus the movie continues from there.

    Or the grenade exploded confetti instead. Have your pick.

    I really hopes this doesn't happen so a couple of years from now someone else can redo I Am Legend and actually do the book justice. Despite Smith's good performance the movie was mediocre with crappy effects, bad editing, bad editing being watered down for a PG-13, and just such a terrible ending (alternate ending was good though).

    I see a lot of people complaining about Smith dieing... I've never had a real issue with killing off a major character in a movie if it fits. It was the dog that got me.

    They brought back Ripley it's nothing new bringing back dead lead characters....I''m sure they'll clone him, has a twin brother....I just loath the special effects from this film and the look of whatever those things were....if they were vampires they didn't look anything like them and they cheaped out by having them all look similar....Omega Man is a million times better wish they gone more with that movie.....

    What they could do is play it off with the alternate ending. The thing is, how would they know if people have seen it or not? Maybe put the trailer out with the alternate ending? Or even start the sequel off with the alternate ending. (oh yeah! In case you haven't seen the alternate... He lives...)

    i always preferred the alt ending, and HATED that they killed neville. but i also understand the weight a 'tragic hero' carries. anyways, i hope this rumor is true, as i would love to see neville survive. a prequel seems like it might be an unnecessary venture.

  • Here's the real question: Knowing that they had the alternative ending that was already shot why did they go with the ending they used. Makes no sense. What they are saying is Will Smith is the only bankable star in movies. I say the concept wil sell. Make a sequel and cast someone else. Set it in another major city. I'l pay to see it.

    P.S The ending to the Omega Man is classic!

    The "alt" ending was the ORIGINAL ending. The "new" ending was the alt. I hope they use the original.

    I think he should stick with those serious movies. These ID4 type hype movies are like a step back for him now. it's like if Oprah took a week off from her show to do the weather for the local news for a fat enough pay check.

    What's ridiculous is the fact that the "alternative" ending was the original screenplay ending, but they changed it a few months after filming because they wanted a more dramatic finish (that made no sense, by the way). The movie wasn't that great even with the alternative ending, they all should just move on.
