Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire just might be the best film of the year, it’s certainly in my top 10 (you can read David Chen’s review here). That said, there is absolutely NOTHING good about the latest Slumdog Millionaire international movie trailer. It feels like a 1980’s film advertisement, complete with cheesy voice over, an upbeat song, and the best moments from the film edited into the worst possible order. But please, don’t let this poor excuse for a movie advertisement influence your decision. If you haven’t already, I highly recommend checking out the much better domestic trailer.

I thought the song ("The Sun Always Shines on TV"; is that by a-ha?) was unexpected and a witty choice, and it blended well with the Millionaire theme music. The voice-over, though, was unnecessary.
  • Travis Faulds
I don't know, Peter...despite what slashfilm had said about this movie, I wasn't really interested. Now that I saw this trailer, I actually have a desire to see it.
  • Lol, wow. I'm glad I saw the domestic trailer first otherwise I never would have even considered watching this film.

Is that *really* the one they're gonna put up here in the states? They cut it like an old 80s film.
  • If I didn't have faith in Boyle, that trailer would have ruined it for me. It was the song and the voice over announcer. Horrible stuff.
  • I wonder why the studio would release a trailer like this. Is this how All international trailers for american movie are?
  • Marky G
I saw the movie and loved it, and that trailer was so bad that I want to unwatch the entire movie.
  • Just kept on going didnt it. The film felt about an hour shorter than that trailer.
  • Eliza
I just saw it today, it was fabulous--I can't wait for the soundtrack on Tuesday! As for that trailer, it wasn't THAT bad visually, but holy crap the audio killed it. The voice over is really not right, and while there's a place for cheesy synth pop, it is not in this trailer. And if there's one thing that will inevitably turn off millions of people, it's that damn Who Wants to be a Millionaire theme music. Gahhhhhhhh!
  • David
I was like this trailer isn't that bad, then the 80's music kicked in.

But I did see the movie last week and highly recommend it.
  • You're right. The movie is soooo not about that retarded show
  • I laughed as soon as it started to the end of the trailer. Wow. If I placed judgment alone on this trailer, I would of waited for it to come out on DVD. I might do that anyway as myself not being a huge Danny Boyle fan.
  • Hollywood should totally have Zack Snyder cut every major movie trailer from now on.
  • Sirius
wow...i didn't know Anil Kapoor was in this...i'll have to check it out for sure now
  • this trailer was horrible, i saw the film a few weeks ago in SF and im just glad i hadnt seen this trailer yet, it would have ruined every good moment in the film by reminding me of the shitty trailer.
  • waltponce
Yeah, this trailer does nothing to sell this movie. I know industry pros read your blog, so...INDUSTRY PROS: FIX IT!!!!!!
  • In Bruges is better than this movie.

Why doesn't anybody give IB any love?
  • Terrible. Just terrible.
  • That song at the end was horrendous. I'm still really excited to see the movie though!
  • Seconded.

That man knows how to make trailers.
  • Wow. Initially, I thought you might be overreacting. That trailer is pretty cheesy. However, I would point out that unlike previous trailers, this one at least showcases some of the more intense moments of the film. Now at least people have a better idea of what the movie is about and what they can expect.

    *Comic Book Guy voice*
Worst. Trailer. EVERRR. That voice over was totally unneccessary. The dialogue speaks for itself and I can't believe whoever slapped this together ignored that.
Don't let this turd deter you from seeing the film. You'll regret it.

My mom and I saw the film yesterday and we were dumbfounded. It was incredible in every sense of the word. Like David said in his review, I really felt more alive walking out of that theatre than walking in. I can't wait to see it again.
  • Sati
I think I prefer this trailer, it gives me more of an idea of the story, and the music is a hilarious and witty choice! Really want to see this now...
  • Travis
Wow...that looks like a completely skippable movie. That is to say, when compared to everything else I have seen or read on slashfilm. I really want to see this film but the closest theater showing it will be an hour away in Indianapolis. It is for reasons like this (the trailer in question) that this film isn't getting the publicity it deserves.

"Feel-good film"? Really, you had to call it a feel good film. Plus it doesn't help that the voice over is the ABC announcer so the whole thing just seems like a big stunt by ABC to get people interested in Who Want's To Be A Millionaire again.
  • Anrkist
Just so you know, the focus of the movie isn't 90% of Who Wants to be a Millionaire... which is the impression I got most from the trailer.
  • James
Honestly most trailers are like this.
  • menotrouble
impressive, how you keep fighting for us to see this movie, peter. so I will. and I will skip the trailer. I guess that makes /film one of my "most trusted brands 2008".
  • grady
That trailer wasn't that bad. Different music and a VO would make all the difference. The domestic trailer isn't much better.

The domestic trailer is just as bad and worse in it's own special way. The use of the Sigur Ros track is so damn over the top in the same that it ruined the trailer for Children of Men. Some brilliant tactician in a meeting pitched it and it stuck.

Sigur Ros make beautiful, epic pieces of music that always feel cinematic and immediately get pinned on things like this. There is a good way to use that music, the trailers so far are not.
  • AlexanderSupertramp
Man that sucked. Too bad. It'll be funny when Average Joe says "ehhh this looks like shit" then a few months later he'll see it's up for Best Picture among other categories...

If any of you /film readers haven't see this PLEEEEASE make an effort...it's great.
  • actually it's a great trailer. very edgy and fun to watch. better than the first one.
  • terrible trailer, but fantastic film! I had so much fun and was so emotionally engaged the whole film. Such a great way to tell a story!
  • Jimmy
Well, I didn't see anyone else point out that the VO guy is the same for the actual Who Wants to be a Millionaire. And selling the movie based on WWTBAM isn't really that bad of an idea considering how popular it is or at least used to be all over the world.

    Cough. British. Cough. Movie.
  • chirag shah
British. Cough. And. Cough...Indian movie....60 people from the 100 member crew were Indian you know...Yes the directer, producer and screenplay writers were British but most of the actors and technicians along with the co-director and music composer were Indian. Also the screenplay was adapted by an Indian book written by Vikas Swaroop. You should read the book...It's good!
  • its a very fantastic movie
do u want to be on tv then log on to www.uploaded.tv and upload your picture music and video and be famous
  • Adam
There hasn't yet been a word invented that describes how awful that trailer is.

The movie, on the other hand, is extraordinary- easily one of my top 5 of the year.
  • crobar
oh my goodness - i saw the preview of Slumdog last week (Am writing from Sydney,w e r alawasy a bit behind!). Move was fantastic but this trailer...what were they thinking???!!!
  • raz
if u found that trailer hillarious than i would advise to keep away from bollywood and the studio should have shown some mind in bringing this film to hollywood audiences
  • dfsff
The trailer was amazing to me, as well as the music.
