LOL: Movie Jackets From the Future

/Film reader Barry J wonders why in movies, all jackets from the future look the same. Exhibit A is Marty McFly Jr’s jacket from Back the the Future Part II, and Exhibit B is young James T Kirk’s jacket from JJ AbramsStar Trek. What do you think?

yeah actually hover boards already exist. Toy companies wont put them out because kids will die on them. look at the documentary on the bttf II DVD.
ps those jackets look nothing alike. marty's jacket is supposed to look like an eighty's jacket futurized and the kirk jacket is supposed to look like a futurized race jacket.

I own a Jacket very simular to the one young J. T. Kirk is wearing there.
FFS it's a biker inspired jacket.
And there are lots and lots of them in contemporary times.

lol be funny if it was the same prop jacket.it does look a little snug and young on marty.

QUESTION: Why do they look the same?

ANSWER: Because the jackets really are from the future!!!!
  • Jinkz
Apparently there is no neck-chilling wind in the future, hence the collarless jackets.
  • Hoverboard no, but the Nikes are already here...

Maybe I should of sent this link to /Film when I first saw them

Because its an allusion to Back To The Future, or the time period, or something, or people have really similar perceptions of the future.
  • Maybe Abrams stole the style from Marty McFly.
  • Solid
Michael Jackson had that jacket in thriller didn't he? It's not from the future. it's from the 80s!
  • Same exact colors and overall cut.

Like I say, no coincidences in film making. Director is god, can make something any color, size, shape. That he picked those colors, definitely clear intention.
  • I'm also ridiculously sad at how wrong BttF II is going to be in 6 years; +side, Obama may still be president!
  • Maybe JJ is paying homage to BttF; There are time travel elements in the upcoming Trek film, right?
  • Overall cut? For instance, cut in the shape of a jacket?
lol The similarities end at color.
  • Other than color, they are nothing alike.
  • Bingo!
  • I'd snap up Marty's jacket in a heartbeat. No wonder that Star Trek clip felt familiar... it was the jacket all along!
  • I am Me
what are they talking about, those jackets look nothing alike. FAIL!
  • More importantly why hasn't someone made a good replica already so we can buy Marty's Jacket!!!?
  • GregoryV
Because Goretex is the new leather.
  • Marty McFly's looks retro futuristic. Kirk's looks...futuristic futuristic.
  • hahahaha. Wait you're being sarcastic right?
  • Where can you get one? Apparently a replica of Marty McFly's Jacket sold on eBay last month for $400

Thats a lot of money for a jacket. But hey, its from the future!
  • Because it's one hell of a BADASS freakin' jacket! I'm wondering where the hell I can get one... I want to be a badass like Kirk and have a middle name of Tiberius and wear cool futuristic jackets, too!!
  • Somehow, the irony of calling yourself "Dan SOLO" and then calling others geeks appears to be lost on you, Dan.
  • Dan SOLO!
GEEK ALERT ! ! ! jeez, wipe the carp from your eyes!
  • Same exact colors and overall cut.
  • Agreed! I'm just not seeing it.
  • It is because you are looking at them in contemporary times. Of course Marty's looks older in design, was made in the 80's. That's why you think it looks "retro". Abrams, doesn't look "futuristic". It looks like 2008's take on futuristic.

If all we know, people in the future will be wearing loin clothes fashioned from cloned wooly mammoth pelts.
  • No, it looks familiar because it is cliche ridden like everything JJ Abrams does. Homeboy regurgitates more than a mother eagle.
  • Burt Nelson
Are we looking at the same jackets? They don't look anything alike.
  • There are no coincidences in movie making.
  • AlexanderSupertramp
Eh...the jacket in BTTF2 is supposed to be an homage to the jacket/vest Marty wore in the first movie...Trek is just a coincidence because they happen to have the same color scheme.
  • even people from the future enjoy the look of leather
  • Member's Only jackets are how Jerry rolls.
  • Noticed similarities first time saw the trailer. Thought it too stupid to mention.
  • I don't think those two jackets look anything alike.
  • mikle
jackets aside, what the hell is up with kirks shoes...?
  • OR...the world will eventually get so hot that there wont be a need for jackets at all...
  • Fuck yes I want the hoverboard. One day it will happen... the person who makes it happen will be LOADED.
  • Brian from OR
No one has said if it is a homage or not. But Roberto Orci was on trekmovie.com last week and made a joke about it.
  • mfo
*(depends on the outlook of that future)
future jacket in film* will either look like that, Blade Runner-ish rain coat or Mad Max-ish.

    period.
  • Fuck the Jackets,I want a hoverboard...and those those nikes Marty had...
  • When I saw this last week I thought JJ was throwing a subtle homage to BTTF with the jacket. It seems like a movie he would admire at least. Glad someone took the time to point this out.
  • Does the jacket come with the Corvette?
  • No, Lancetex is the new leather.
  • And in 50 years, we'll be saying futuristic futuristic futuristic x3.
  • Actually, just red. The black is there by chemical default. The red is produced by the blood of factory workers.
  • Where's my hoverboard!?
