Steven Spielberg’s Oldboy is NOT a Remake

Two weeks ago it was reported that Steven Spielberg was developing a remake of Chan-wook Park’s Oldboy, with Will Smith attached to star. Apparently that isn’t exactly 100% true. Our friends at Film School Rejects got a chance to speak with Smith, who clarified that the movie would not be a remake of Park’s 2003 film.

“We’re looking at that right now. Not the film though, it’s the original source material,” Smith told FSR. “There’s the original comics of ‘Oldboy’ that they made the first film from. And that’s what we’re working from, not an adaptation of the film…”

That’s right, Spielberg’s film will be based on the Japanese manga by Nobuaki Minegishi and Garon Tsuchiya. Read the official book synopsis below:

“Ten years ago, they took him. He doesn’t know who. For ten years he has been confined in a private prison. He doesn’t know why. For ten years his only contact with the outside world has been a television set and the voices of his jailers. In time, he lost himself. He changed . . . transformed himself into something else . . . something hard . . . something lethal. Suddenly one day, his incarceration ends, again without explanation. He is sedated, stuffed inside a trunk, and dumped in a park. When he awakes, he is free to reclaim what’s left of his life . . . and what’s left is revenge.”

The Onion AV Club says that “the manga’s story isn’t nearly as propulsive and grim as the film version, but as soon as their plotlines begin to deviate, the manga becomes just as compelling.” So while the short plot synopsis sounds similar, it appears that the film adaptation did deviate from Minegishi and Tsuchiya’s original manga. But does that make this “adaptation” any more tolerable to fans of the 2003 South Korean film?

For those that might be interested, Amazon has each of the three volumes available for around 10 or 11 bucks each.

I knew that the film was not based on an original screenplay but adapted from a japanese manga, so when I first saw the news of the remake my question was: are they remaking the movie or making a new adaption of the manga? So this comes as no big surprise to me, and while I don't think there is a need for a new version I do think it's good that they are working from the manga instead of the film.
  • Hmmm...this sounds just like when Dicaprio said that it wouldn't me an Akira film remake, but an Akira Manga remake. Is that just the way to save face when youre a pretentious Hollywood douche?
  • So would this be considered a reboot even if the first one was from a different country?
  • Steelo
ah. Well I need to read the books then
  • well then, THANK GOD in that case. i can't take a remake of OldBoy at all
  • lol oh god
  • it's all about the money, my friend
  • Y'know, I think this just might work.

But again I was never that upset when I first heard the news because I've never seen Oldboy.
  • No matter what, the two movies will be compared by those who have seen them. Berg and Smith will not live up to the expectations.
  • And the saga continues.
Can anyone see Steven or Will sitting around reading mangas?
  • I'm so so happy they won't make it a "remake", Oldboy was sick and it should never be remade...but I still hope Spielberg and Smith will not fuck up this magna adaptation.
  • I've never seen Oldboy...but wasn't that side scrolling scene posted about a week ago from the movie? 'Cause that was one word. Badass. I don't know if that can be redone without blatant copying.

I dont care if its a remake or a new interpretation of the manga, its the same to me in this case, its just "another" oldboy film done by a "competent" director.
For a director whose previous credits are the brilliant schindlers list, munich, saving private ryan...and now to do "another" oldboy film (regardless of it being a remake or a manga version)....sounds to me Señor Spielbergo is now officially a HACK.

Will smith is just a good actor, but until now we havent seen him in challenging roles....in the oldboy movie choi min shik transformed completely in oh dae su, poison, fury and vengeance in all his body and mind, it was a professional sacrifice to transform completely into that character, i frankly cant see will smith with poison and fury in his face.

I am curious what are quentin tarantino`s thoughts on this bit of news, since he championed the film here.

Whats next?? Coppola remaking Ichi the killer??? George lucas remaking Save the Green Planet with Hayden Christensen?? Oliver Stone doing Hara Kiri ??? Gus Van sant`s version of All About Lily Chou Chou?? David Fincher`s Memories of Murder?? Julie Taymon`s Im a Cyborg, but im ok???

BOY! I would pay big bucks to see those remakes.

Lets face it: there is superior filmmaking in asia.

Coppola and Ichi ... FUNNY ... I was thinking more Scorsese.

Loved Memories of Murder, Ichi, and Hara Kiri (and the vengence trilogy) but I haven't seen the others - they are now on my list.

    That's fine by me.

These Hollywood people are sharp aren't they? It's not about if the movie Oldboy is based on the manga as closely. But if it's even really necessary. The Korean film was executed so well. That there's really no reason to do it. Other than to see "Americans" in it.

It's ironic how Smith defends his stance on this "remake" by saying it's going to be based on the original source material when Smith himself is known to change original stories on a whim due to his own ethics, completely ruining them in the end. As people have said here before. This is going to turn out like the War of The World/I Am Legend flaccid crap these guys do turn out.

Which is good for the original film really. It'll just make the Korean film that much better.

    sounds fine by me
  • brian
sounds to similar for me to like the idea of it. even if it takes a slightly different path I don't see Spielberg making anything half as good as the original.
  • The movie and the manga do have some strong divergences, but that's not the point. Whichever version they're basing it off of, it's far too intense for American audiences who want to see a film starring Will Smith, directed by Spielberg. It's gonna get destroyed.

Oh, by the way, original manga has eight volumes, not three. Not sure why your Amazon search is only bringing those up, but there's a lot more after.
  • GregoryV
Manga source? Ha! Nice try Mr. Spielberg, nice try.
  • It is going to be very interesting watching this go through development... Every time they talk about it they'll be sure to keep as many fans as happy as possible to ensure those tickets are bought opening weekend.
  • In other words it won't be as good. I mean Sure it's Spielberg but what made the original great is how far out it went without being completely preposterous.
  • Vobe
Whatever. No matter how you look at it, this IS a remake of the original Oldboy film. I really liked this movie, and even i approve of a new take on the story.. it's gonna suck if stevie fucks this one up.
  • Nope. Sitting around counting cash on the other hand? Yes.

The Akira anime film and manga are two very, very different beasts. The manga is a huge 6 volume, 2000+ page epic, while the film is only bits and fragments from the story completely reworked into a different tale. That's also the reason why it's impossible to make any real sense out the film. The movie is really only a portion of the first volume along with a few ideas from the last one thrown in.

So if the live-action movie is following the manga, it won't be anything like the Akira anime film.
  • That's why this movie news seems so far fetched. The themes and situations in the movie are outside both of their zones.
  • unscriptd.life
I so agree. Neither of them have come close to touching such a dark plot. Based on whatever, DOESN'T matter ... I see too much action in these films - stuff blowing up ... Can ANYONE see Smith coming after someone with a Hammer? yeah, neither can I!

So it's based on the books ... whoopie.... still has no hope. None.

I consider OldBoy to be one of the best movies made. I love all of Park's vengence trilogy.
  • No, I think Oliver Stone would go more towards remaking Tetsuo: The Iron Man..
  • getoverit
...so in other words, internet bloggers and film nerds bitch about news that isn't completely accurate......again. Now I'm actually interested in seeing this film.
  • Matt
No matter who directs the American version, I probably won't watch it because it won't beat Park's version. Will Smith is a good choice, but Speilberg has no place as the director. He'll either give it a Disney atmosphere like he did with Kubrick's A.I., or he'll continue stooping to Michael Bay's level of crap like he did with the last Indiana Jones movie. If anything, this should be helmed by someone like David Fincher.
  • No More Aliens!
Lol, semantics - it's the SAME story. I don't know what Spielberg and Smith are thinking - how can you better tell this story? The film already made from this manga is a masterpiece - and was perfect as Korean cinema. I'm American and I'll say it myself - there is no way an American angle on this can come anywhere close to the Korean take. Hollywood just isn't the same.

We can't do better with this one, move on. Please just go do something ORIGINAL. This is an epic waste of time and embarrassingly arrogant.
