Movie Trailer: Greg Mottola’s Adventureland

One of the movies I’ve been looking forward to is Superbad director Greg Mottola’s Adventureland coming of age film based on his own experiences at the Long Island amusement park. Set in 1987, the film follows James Brennan (Jesse Eisenberg), an uptight recent college grad forced to take a minimum wage job at an amusement park when he realizes he can’t afford his dream tour of Europe. Writer/director Greg Mottola – best known as the director of the hit comedy Superbad – channeled his own experiences as a low-paid amusement park employee while making the film.

Co-starring Kristen Stewart, Ryan Reynolds, Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig and Martin Star. I hear it’s more of a damedy than a laugh-out-loud comedy (ie more Garden State than Superbad), and has the potential to be next year’s sleeper hit ala Little Miss Sunshine/Juno. The first trailer has just been released and the film looks like everything I thought it was going to be. Watch the trailer now, and please leave your comments below.

Ghostlife saw an early test screening in Boston, and had this to say about the film: “I thought it was excellent.” …”The acting and screenplay were great, but also thought the direction was fabulous. There was a slight ethereal quality to it that added a lot of atmosphere. The 80s aspect was also not overdone as I feared, it complimented everything just right. As it started I didnt know where it was going to go, it felt like it might be a directionless screwball comedy, but it turned out to be what I thought was a beautiful movie. Great character, acting, a tinge of weirdness. Unique stuff, well done!”

Watch the trailer now in High Defintiion on MySpace. Adventureland is now set for a Spring 2009 (possibly March 27th?) release.

  • Am I the only one who thinks "She must be loose" whenever I look at Kristen Stewart?
  • Oi Vey
she was damn cute in 'INto the Wild' and her 'cameo' in Jumper
  • Emm
Awesome, I've been waiting to hear news about this movie for a long while. I can't wait to see it.
  • Fuck it, I would still do her...she has that sexy drug addict look to her...I dunno, thats kinda sexy to me...
  • Yeah, its been in post production for a while now. I think Kristen shot this before Twilight?
  • And lets not forget, In the Land of Women
  • Yea, I'd do her too, but she seems naturally loose...
  • Emm
yes, she did. She got the part in twilight while filming Adventureland. I suppose they may have pushed this film back because of all the press Kristen has been getting during the filming of Twilight. I don't know whether this is a rumor or not, but I did read somewhere that they re-shot the ending of this or were considering it.
Its about time we hear something about this film, seems like they have a great overall cast and director to boot.
  • Rick
It's been done for a bit, but they wanted to release it in the spring. Have heard it's great.
  • This looks like Garden State in high school. The actors just look a little young.
  • I will reserve my predictions for after the preview. Describing it at Little Miss Sunshine/Juno/Garden State really gets my hopes down. Though I think those movies were decent, I am really tired of that style....as of Smart People and Running with Scissors. I would like to feel something new... minus a soundtrack by Kimya Dawson.
  • The drug addict look is my favorite kind of sexy.
  • i hadn't heard of this film yet, sounds like something i'll really enjoy

plus if ryan reynolds is in it i'm sold

  • she was good in INTO THE WILD
  • i didnt like Garden State, I liked Juno and Little MissSunshine, though. but i think the "sleeper hit" for low budget movies is overtired. Why is it always with all-white casts? Just wondering.
  • Dave
    I think, "I hope she's loose."
  • It is possible that the film makers feel that their films are more geared for a certain viewership that will only be attracted to a certain cast.
  • Hasn't anyone else noticed the Kristen Stewarts wears those black jelly bracelets in almost every movie she's in? LoL.
I think she's a fair actress with substance and not nearly as annonying as a horde of others her age.
  • Noodles
ENOUGH with the "its the next LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE/JUNO"! You KILL movies that way by placing these ludicrous expectations on them. Seriously man, just stop it.
  • and everyone's favorite Favreau movie - Zathura
  • Ghost
The more of Kristen Stewart the better.
  • I don't find her sexy at all. Maybe that's just because I'm not a guy, but I know good looking women when I see them! I have women crushes on Liv Tyler, Rose McGowan, Tina Fey, and Charlize Theron!
  • After viewing the trailer, I will probably check the movie out. I don't think I will thoroughly enjoy it though.

As someone who grew up going to Adventureland on Long Island, I look forward to this movie. Although, I think a movie based on Nunley's would be a lot more entertaining...
  • I WELCOME that style, especially lately. It's down-to-earth, honest filmmaking and a reliving break from the super heroes, comic book franchise popcorn big-buck films overflowing our screens so frequently.

Looking forward to this as a result of that style. Anything else probably would have been lobbed into the 'like OC' basket, no?
  • Trailer looks OK. And I love the fact Bill Hader is wearing a Daniel Plainview mustache.
  • looks promising, once again Ryan Reynolds sells any movie for me but this looks good all around
  • dlb
    this looks great
  • This looks pretty interesting. But am I the only one who got the feeling that Jesse Eisenberg's character was totally written for Michael Sera? Maybe it's just because I'm such a big fan of "Superbad," but it seems like it to me.
  • I am pretty sure I am in love with this woman. I just saw Twilight and mmmmmmm
  • Meh, I'll probably be bored by this. I only laughed at the corndog joke, and honestly it wasn't that great of a joke.
  • his SNL skit as daniel was amazing
  • I can't say that I dislike that movie.
  • stb247
IT'S MARTIN STARR IN A MOVIE!!!! You go, Bill Haverchuck!
  • Seriously, like... just replace the lead actor with Michael Cera and my excitement level would be so much higher.
  • Bout time he gets more screen time eh?
Great trailer can't wait to see it.
  • Oi Vey
I'm with Captain Howdy. I too like that style. And it's not like they're 'dominating' everything.
  • This seems like they wanted to have Michael Cera in this but he just turned it down so they went with someone else.
  • That's what they do with every movie like this now.
  • I could see her being nominated for an Oscar if she got the right role.
  • The problem with "trying something new" is that they would be judged as the movie that tried something new. That would seem kind of cliche.
  • This film might get more press with the success of Twilight.
  • Kristen is a doll.

    I can't wait for Adventureland.
  • That makes very little sense. Stepping outside of the trend is cliche?
  • FOR SURE.
  • giantyoda
Looks like a pretty fun 80's revival piece with all the cliches. I highly doubt it will be in the same league as Little Miss Sunshine or Juno (critically), but I think it will be worth the $10.
  • Jamie
"...and has the potential to be next year’s sleeper hit ala Little Miss Sunshine/Juno."

OHNO!!!!! Does this mean you're going to mention the movie to us 47 more times?

    NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
  • I agree with you, I liked the style at one point in time (and to a point still do). I am just over the the feel of these movies. I don't doubt that this might be a good movie, but I would like to see it try something new. I shall decide after the preview.
