Edward Cullen and Bella Swan, the leading characters in the film adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight, may be models for abstinence and chastity, but the movie’s hardcore fans are not abstaining from the box office and their fervor for the Summit release is anything but chaste. After a reported $7.5M for Thursday midnight screenings, throngs of girls have packed multiplexes all day long, and the Catherine Hardwicke-directed movie has generated another $25.5M since sunrise Friday for a spectacular $33M opening day.

Now the question is, how will Twilight perform the rest of the weekend and in its total domestic run. The smart money is on the 3-day following the Sex & the City formula with $22.1M Saturday, down about 33% Friday-to-Saturday, followed by a 30% Saturday-to-Sunday dip to a possible $15.4M. That would bring the weekend haul to an impressive $70.58M.

If that number holds, and there is room for error because this is some uncharted territory (there has never been anything quite like Twilight), but the multiple (the number that you multiply the opening weekend by to reach the total domestic gross) could be as low as 2.25, which would be about the same as High School Musical 3: Senior Year (Disney). My sense is that this movie is very, very niche, and the multiple could be even less than HSM3, which has benefited from big family audience business. I am guessing that Summit’s biggest movie ever will finish in the $145M-$150M range.

This is all fantastic news for Summit. As a production company, they have produced many successful many successful films, including Evita ($50M cume), American Pie ($102.5M cume),  Mr. And Mrs. Smith ($186.3M cume),  Step Up ($65.3M cume), Step Up 2 the Streets ($58M cume), and the current arthouse hit Happy-Go-Lucky ($1.8M cume so far), which will likely earn Sally Hawkins a Best Actress nomination at this year’s Oscars, but the saga of Edward and Bella is only the 6th movie that they have distributed themselves. The previous 5 – P2 ($4M cume), Penelope ($10M), Never Back Down ($24.8M), Fly Me to the Moon ($12.2M) and Sex Drive ($8.3M) – combined to gross $59.3M domestic, less than Twilight’s opening weekend.

Chalk the success of Twilight up as one for the crowd that says “There’s too much sex and violence in Hollywood movies.” The author Meyer, a Mormon and has never tried alcohol or seen an R-rated movie, is the biggest star in the industry this weekend. Twilight is about vampires, but the books, and now blockbuster movie, are about old-fashioned romance and chivalry. Edward and Bella are the morally sound antidote to TV shows like Gossip Girl and the new version of Beverly Hills 90210. Can a movie make abstinence the cool thing to do? All those high school and college guys who are getting dragged to see this one on their Friday and Saturday dates are likely to put the theory to the test.

The other major wide release this weekend is Bolt from Walt Disney Animation Studios, but, after Beverly Hills Chihuahua, audiences may have had their fill of talking dogs. Despite almost 900 engagements in Disney Digital 3D, Bolt managed only about $7.1M on opening day, edged by Quantum of Solace (Sony), which grabbed $8.7M on its 2nd Friday. I still anticipate a #2 finish for the well-reviewed animated movie with a possible $27.69M, but the number is well below expectations.

Bolt is not from Pixar, but the executive producer is Oscar winner John Lasseter who wrote and directed Pixar mega-hits Toy Story, Toy Story 2, A Bug’s Life and Cars. The most recent glory days for Disney Animation started in 1989 with the now-classic The Little Mermaid ($111.5M domestic) and peaked with 1994’s The Lion King ($328.5M domestic). The era also included excellent movies like Beauty & the Beast ($171.3M domestic), Aladdin ($217.3M domestic), Pocahontas ($141.5M domestic) and Mulan ($120.6M domestic). The company seemed to come off the rails right after 1999’s Tarzan, which scored a huge $171M US gross.

This was Disney trying to capture some of that Pixar magic for its own animation brand. Since 2000, Walt Disney Animation Studios has released 15 films with an average opening weekend of only $12.3M and an average domestic gross of just $73.3M, so Bolt is way above the company’s recent batting average. But it is still not the monstrous blockbuster they badly want.

I am projecting $26.97M for the rebooted James Bond movie Quantum of Solace (Sony), pushing its 10-day domestic cume to $109M. Dreamworks/Paramount and their sturdy Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa will manage another solid weekend. Mad 2 rounded up $3.75M on Friday, and it should reach $16.68M for the 3-day for a new cume of $138.1M. The equally durable David Wain comedy Role Models (Universal) will round out the top 5 for the weekend. The picture added another $2.4M on Friday and that could translate to $7.44M by Monday morning.

My friend lent me the book because I am an absolute huge Joss Whedon fan... and I got her into Buffy. When I looked at Twilight I thought, "okay, Buffy and Angel.... except Bella isn't a slayer". I read the book (mind you, my first real book ever from cover to cover)... and I loved it. I'm 25. And a dude. Very good story. The fact that words that aren't placed in speech bubbles on shiny colored pages like I am used to reading on a day to day basis... actually kept me interested.

The movie was very good. Any person can agree that the book is better... but that is usually the case anyways.

    I'm a Twilight fan.
  • "I read the book (mind you, my first real book ever from cover to cover)... and I loved it. I'm 25. And a dude."

25 and this is the only book you've read cover to cover? Voluntarily I assume. The future is bleak indeed.
  • I wasn't going to go there. But it did cross my mind.
  • Max
I would not be surprised if this movie has a Cloverfield style drop. I don't really like the idea of these movies with hidden religious connotations being marketed to kids. Not that there's anything wrong with the message, its just kind of sneaky, like hiding medicine in their candy.

You know something is a fad when you don't hear about how GOOD something is, just how POPULAR something is.
  • I absolutely loathe this whole fucking franchise. I was dating a girl who told me all the major plot points and it sounds like absolute garbage.

Oh, and Steve, I usually love everything on Slashfilm to death, but you might wanna fact-check on the "good clean abstinence thing." Apparently it's only because he might kill her that they don't have sex; not out of any real moral appreciation for abstinence. And apparently in a later book they still do, and she gets pregnant. (Like I said...dated a girl who was obsessed with these books.)
  • Well first let me congratulate you on your extensive credibility.

I suspect this was meant to be tongue-in-cheek, as it sounds too funny to be otherwise.
  • nelson
this movie just looks terrible kristen stewart only good actor in whole movie she is better than this
  • kip
this movie will make a lot of money because of the built in fanbase which consists of tweens. For every one of these tweens there is a person who does not wanna see the movie but has to, be it a boyfriend or mother or whatever. Unfortunately I am one of those boyfriends. When the movie ended there was an awkwardness among the fans as they walked out of the theater. A silence that pretty much stated their disappointments. They knew the movie sucked but did not want to say it.

Loathe the franchise? that's rediculous! Just because you boneheads don't 'get' it doesn't make it a bad thing. Maybe the movie is not that great, but it's not that bad, either. I can't help but think that so much of the twilight hate among critics is that people just don't want to believe that a movie will do well on passion (and not dollars) alone. How much did Bolt cost to make? 150M? All I have to say is ha-ha-fuckin-ha!
  • Zinc
Who let you out of the kitchen? Go make me a sandwich.
  • The difference is that Bolt is a better movie than Twilight by FAR. Look at critics, they agree!
  • Emm
Well, all I can say is summit really lucked out getting this franchise. I think they are pretty well set up for other films. I have a horrible feeling that they will rehire Cathrine Hardwicke, just because they dont want to ruin the "formula". I doubt they will listen to the critics...

Too bad for bolt tho, i'll see it eventually.
  • Wow there's a lot of comments about this movie
  • mxmazn
I wouldn't be surprised if the person/the next person you'll ever date IS a twilight fan. I am one, and i REALLY dont appreciate being call stupid or easiest to brain wash. What a jerk.
  • mxmazn
cause it only attracts younger children, and possibly some girls to hear "hannah montana". I know a lot of my friends arent going cause of miley cyrus. XD
  • Tracy
I am happy for Twilight, I really am, and I'm happy for the fanbase. I like the idea that a movie can cost so little to make and yet make so much money. I don't think Twilight is a cinematic masterpiece, and I think the critics will be all over it, but I don't think the critics really matter. Movies are not about making something the most realistic, or the most funny, or the most original. Movies are about entertainment, about enjoyment, not nit-picking. On pure entertainment, I give Twilight a A+. And that's what's really important in a film.
  • Solid
Well we're the same country that put Beverly hils chihuahua on top didn't we.
  • No, all we need to do is look at Juno...or the Blair Witch Project....or Chasing Amy...

Twilight needs a passionate fanbase from the novels because it wouldn't be able to do well on its own simply as a film rather than an adaptation.
  • @tina

Seriously, This whole Concept has been beaten to death!!! I mean how many Vampire movies with females as a sex object are there!?!?

-------I say Give me a live Action Vampire Hunter D. or The Preacher
  • Peter Chen
Teenage girls are some of the stupidest, easiest to brain wash movie-goers.

The reason the books were so successful is because they are porn for women. Plain and simple.

It's a shame this movie made so much when other better movies can't even find a distributor.
  • delilah
try reading a evem apage of any of the books before you judge it!!!!!!!!!
  • This was like the funniest movie I've ever seen in my entire life.
  • Han is Solo
I'm right there with you, buddy. Welcome to our fucked country.
  • 790
This is the Hanna Montana / High School Musical fanbase,,,

I went to the local theater today to finally see "Quantum of Solace" ( it kicked f-ing ass, btw).
What I saw was lots of 12 year old tweens lining up for Twilight...
This isn't a movie, its crack for teenagers and ppl that have a vampire fetish,,, lame!!!!!
  • Kristina
I'm with Tracy - for me, Twilight is not about how realistic it is, on the contrary, it is all about the escape. It is one of those books or movies that you can thoroughly enjoy without having to think too hard - good escapist entertainment. I'm 22 and I have read all four books from cover to cover, and was not at all disappointed by the movie! I went in there not especting something grand, but some good entertainment. I came out of the theatre extremely satisified and decided that the $7.50 I paid for the ticket was well worth it - and I totally intend on seeing it again. Obviously, it is not for everyone, but isn't that the story with every movie and book?
  • Xhai
did you actually READ every single page of all 4 books? Alright then.
  • VHD. That would be hot.
  • Han is Solo
yeah Peter, my girlfriend is one of those "stupid, easy to brain wash girls" that you speak of so ignorantly.

Before you throw out biased comments try looking into the story, they aren't "porn for woman".
  • No surprises here, we expected these projected numbers. Still, it's a shame. Not that I can really talk. I never read a book and I won't watch the film - but that's only because I know my taste, and I know better.
  • I honestly never knew there was such a huge fan base for all of this. I also didn't know anything about it until the movie was mentioned. I guess I am not the fan base on this one.

How is Bolt doing so weak?
  • You know what's really ridiculous? I'm german and i think it's ridiculous that so many english speaking people write ridiculous wrong.
  • Well, damn...

The problem with this "new" take on romance is that these characters are just as unbelievable and some are as difficult to tolerate as Gossip girl and 90210. And it's not because there's vampires involved, it's because they don't act like real people either.

Hehe, and wait till they make the fourth film. All that good clean love is gonna go out the window faster than a stock trader in 1929.
  • BOLT was AWESOME
BOLT was AWESOME, go out and see it these next two days so it can beat that piece of sh!t Twilight!
  • 790
    Well said Peter,,,

Bolt ??? who cares about a tweeker dog cartoon ? How old are some of you ???
  • tiyachick_kiss
i was at the king of prussia mall at 12 but couldnt get a ticket...arghhh ! i was sooo salty i wanted to see rpattz sooooo bad i would have hurt for the ticket! haha
  • tiyachick
excuse me, wtf are you talking about. have you read the books? they dont even introduce the idea until the third book and it doesnt even go into any sick feak nasty detail thank you very much.i would know i have read all of the books and is on her website for updates every frickin day.its not like anne rice or any thing its written by a frickin mormon for dudes sake.

p.s. stupidest is not even a word. and you have the audasity to call s teenagers dumb? hmmm.....how ironic. you idiotic freak...haha your a freak hahahaha
  • tiyachick
    cricket cricket
  • Joe
Twilight is Anne Rice fan-fiction written by a Mormon woman who obviously thinks the ideal relationship is to have someone obsess over you and for you to completely eat it up.

The fact that you go to Stephanie Meyer's website daily for updates scares and astounds me. It's a little scary to think a book written on a seventh-grade reading level has this many rabid fans.

Plus, vampire c-sections and pedophile werewolves, oh my!
  • wareagle6
How can it be porn when the the main characters have no physical relationship until the 4th book? Their make-out sessions are practically G rated, and even then there aren't many of them.
  • wareagle6
They were married when she got pregnant, the way a pregnancy is supposed to happen.
  • Joe
The second-to-last movie I saw in a theater was also based off a cult book, made on a relative shoestring budget and was from an author with crazy fans.

That movie was Choke. And I can guarantee that if I were to compare it to this dreck, which had a budget over 10 times that of Choke, it'd come out a clear winner.

Hell, it even had a better Radiohead song over the credits.
  • You Go "The_mother_load"! I'm 22 and an absolute fan of Meyer and all of her books. I've read everything that she has published. I got my mom into her books and we went together to see the movie. It is awesome how a book/movie/ franchise..... can bring moms and daughters together. I really hope that Twilight does well at the Movies because its an amazing story that narrow minded opininated people just don't get. And sadly they will never get it b/c they would rather cause discord and angst. So anyways, looking forward to NEW MOON now!!!
  • Melissa
I have to say I'm tired of everyone saying this is just a story for teenagers and younger... When I was at the theater I would have to say it was half older women and have younger... pretty even. The movie was fun, not as good as I was hoping it would be, but still entertained me. I think they need a new director and more money for the sequel... the special effects were AWFUL.

But I'm excited to see this movie doing such good business! It was fun seeing how a book can bring so many people together! I know this site is about the movie but pretty much everyone seeing it this weekend are die hard Twilight fans (probably no casually interested people would go and listen to the shrieks that erupted in the theater).

I'm so happy this book has inspired so much passion! Fans around the world will be lining up for this movie when it opens in their countries. :-)
  • Melissa
    pedophile werewolves? What??

The werewolves aren't even introduced in Twilight... they come up in New Moon. And Jacob is YOUNGER than Bella. Where do you get the pedophile for the werewolves? I could maybe see you saying that about the vampires but it doesn't make sense to say it about the werewolves
  • Not the least bit surprised at its success. I think we'll have to find out next week if it'll stick around, if these tween and teen girls are too disappointed it's not a shot-for-shot, word-for-word recreation of the novel to see it a second or third time.

I just can't believe so many studios passed on this project. It's a goldmine.
  • Troy
I can't belive this bad dream is still happening!
  • Joe
Considering the first I had ever heard of Twilight was the fourth book, I know the basic plots of the first 3, and most of 4.

And the whole part where he "bonds" or whatever with Bella's fucking newborn baby? That is where I am puling pedophilic werewolves from.
  • tiyachick
    dude.
    rawr.
    your cool...sikey...haha
twilight is not anne rice trust me i have read some of her books and they were not that appetizing okay. if you dont like the movie or book i guess i could respect that. though i dont really agree but i will respect someone elses opinion. if you dislike the books and movies sooo much why waste your time writing how much you hate it. if it is as bad as you beleive it shouldnt be worth your time that you could be wasting doing something more interesting. like walking a dog or possibly reading a book other than twilight etc. seriously if i hated twilight and thought it was fan fiction written by a fat mormon that i wouldnt waste my time energy and anthing else on it. dude 1800get a life much. i wonder do you and other twilight dislikers take pleasure in trashing a book in which they probably havent read?
