The Wrestler Movie Trailer

Fox Searchight has finally released a movie trailer for Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler. You’ve heard the buzz, Mickey Rourke’s performance is Oscar worthy. The Wrestler is, without a doubt, one of the best films of this year. I’m confident that it will grace many critic top 10’s come late December. The music track that Bruce Springstein wrote for the film is used front and center, and it is really amazing how well it works over clips from the film. Please leave your thoughts in the comments below. I would like to hear what you think of the trailer.

Official Plot Synopsis: Back in the late ’80s, Randy “The Ram” Robinson (Mickey Rourke) was a headlining professional wrestler. Now, twenty years later, he ekes out a living performing for handfuls of diehard wrestling fans in high school gyms and community centers around New Jersey. Estranged from his daughter (Evan Rachel Wood) and unable to sustain any real relationships, Randy lives for the thrill of the show and the adoration of his fans. However, a heart attack forces him into retirement. As his sense of identity starts to slip away, he begins to evaluate the state of his life — trying to reconnect with his daughter, and striking up a blossoming romance with an exotic dancer (Marisa Tomei) who is ready to start a new life. Yet all this cannot compare to the allure of the ring and passion for his art, which threatens to pull Randy “The Ram” back into his world of wrestling. Director Darren Aronofsky presents a powerful portrait of a battered dreamer, who despite himself and the odds stacked against him, lives to be a hero once again in the only place he considers home – inside the ring. THE WRESTLER had its North American premiere at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival and won the Golden Lion at the 2008 Venice Film Festival.

Watch the trailer in High Definition on Apple. The Wrestler hits theaters beginning on December 17th 2008.

Huge letdown. Totally agree with Jeff W. , although my wife had to hide her eyes for one wresting scene. Rourke was amazing, Tomei was great. Seeing both their bodies (especially Tomei's ;) ) honed for the part and used to advance the story was superb, but the ending left us not only disappointed, but angry. We started to care for these characters and wanted to at least see some resolution to their story. I think Aronofsky must have seen "No country for old men" and decided to piss off his audience in an even worse way. I won't be seeing another film by him ever again. I've learned my lesson just like I have about anything Tim Burton touches.

This film is a bit overrated. For the most part it works but the ending is ambiguous and abrupt. I don't need a Hollywood ending, nor do I need everything neatly sewn up, but the ending of the Wrestler wasn't an ending at all. When the credits rolled I was in disbelief that the film was over. What a letdown after a terrific build up. By the way, the violence is not nearly as intense as reviews would have you believe. Again, a nice little film but I think people are going to feel that there was too much hype.

I totally agree with you. I suspect the screenwriter used Jake the Snake as a character model for the Ram. However, I in no way intend for that to be taken as negative criticism. No one has ever created story like this in the setting of professional wrestling. It looks absolutely brilliant.

Cheesy? Okay, maybe a little. But this movie isn't about white trash. White poverty may be the setting but the film looks to be about failed success, strained family relationships, redemption, and aging. I understand how you misunderstood it though. After all, it's hard being analytic and insightful. Tell me, how does it feel to watch art through a simple-minded perspective? Is being ignorant as blissful as I suspect? And please, don't rip on The Boss.

I think it could be influenced by Terry Funk's life as well. The movie is not completely original and seems to follow a predictable template of the genre it relies on right down to the stripper. I hope it does well though, but as for the Oscar nod? I do not see it.

gotta love darren. He knows how to take you out of the realm of a fiction film and make you actually be the characters,
  • Andy Salazar
Is the character loosely based on Jake the Snake Roberts?

I saw this in Toronto a few months ago, it's still my favorite movie of the year.
  • Amazing
  • This is easily my most looked forward to movie this year. Can't wait.
  • I've been looking forward to this for a long time. A bit bummed about the January 15 release for Australia but, oh well, it'll be worth the wait. Trailer was great, except I cringed at the "What do you want from me...?" line. Really? She really says that?... ugh. The rest redeemed itself, though. I was buying a ticket regardless.
  • love the bruce springsteen song, i see a second oscar for him
  • very very powerful

This is easily in the top 3 of '08 for me. I saw the premiere in Toronto back in September and was absolutely blown away. It wasn't what I was expecting at all from Aronofsky, but he's really shown his ability and range with this picture, completely different from his previous work. And of course, Rourke was made for this role. The trailer is solid, but still doesn't really do the film justice... everyone needs to see this come December.

    Mickey Rourke's face is terrifying.
  • Mickey Rourke bugs me but I liked him very much in the trailer. I suspect the film will have the same effect to a larger degree. It does leave me wondering if he took steroids to bulk up for the film, not that it matters much.
  • Well worth the wait!!
  • cellchild
not impressed at all. i believe in darren
ourke but this trailer is pathetic. and this cheesy tagline "witness the ressurection..." wtf? we want to see a movie about white trash, give us white trash, get off that borelancholic springsteen score. yack!
  • Amazing trailer...amazing movie...and welcome back, Mickey Rourke...
  • This is a movie I can't wait to see, although it does look like a movie that will just depress the hell out of me.
  • I feel your pain, I'm an Aussie too.
Pretty powerful trailer, I'm really looking forward to seeing this.
  • NECRO* butcher.
  • Wow, just wow. I've been waiting to see a trailer for this and I must say that it looks simply amazing. Now I understand why you guys have been talking about it so much.
  • Captain Awesome
This looks phenomenal. I have a feeling the ending is going to be hard to digest :(

I saw the film a few days ago, and while it doesn't feel like a typical Aronofsky film, it is still one of the singular most amazing pieces I have seen in a long while.

I can't wait any longer for this! This might just top The Dark Knight and Let the Right One In for the best flick of this year. And it was great to see some real underground wrestlers in the movie trailer. I knew that Darren was at a Ring of Honor show to research for this movie but to film too? Icing on the cake. The only way to make probably the best wrestling movie ever made is in the best wrestling company out there. December 15, The Wrestler and I get it on!
  • Ditto. See Beyond The Mat as well as this and you'll have one large insight into the reality of 'fake' wrestling.

  • I originally wasn't really interested in this movie just because I don't like wrestling in general. But this looks amazing, just by the trailer. Looks like my ticket will be bought. :)
  • Done and done.
  • Justin Craig
If that movie is half as well done as this 3 minute trailer, then it's going to be incredible. Without a shadow of a doubt, Mickey Rourke is the perfect actor to play that part. He looks and sounds exactly like a washed up wrestler ought to and he seems to play the character with a grace that couldn't have been matched by any other actor. If the oscar buzz hasn't started yet then it will after this one's wide release.
  • the last bampf
fuk yeh. aronofsky aronofsky aronofsky. the best guy around these days.
haven't even seen this yet, but i can't wait for his next film.
  • Oh, the Boss is a lock for Best Original Song, too.
  • Saw it Wednesday night and interviewed Darren and Marisa Thursday morning. Fantastic movie. Definitely in my top 5 for this year. I think any nominations beyond Best Actor will depend on how well Fox Searchlight runs their campaign.

When I saw the scene where Mickey and Evan are talking at Asbury Park and he starts to cry I thought "This is the scene they'll show at the Oscars when they read 'Mickey Rourke for The Wrestler.'"
  • free kool-aid? i didnt know there was kool-aid. where can i get mine? i love kool-aid.
  • That trailer is put together rather well. Not that I needed it to convince me or ruin it for me I was still going to check this out once it was released.
  • i wish i had known that marisa was gonna be stripping in the trailer before i watched it here at work, lol. i hope no one noticed... this looks pretty good, it has definitely grown on me.
  • Solid
It's like the story of my life. Gotta see this. I'm a lonely guy with nothing going for me too incase you were wondering.
  • Jack
anyone who hasn't checked out "Beyond the Mat" definitely should. its a documentary following a few different wrestlers including Jake the Snake who's life seems to be very much like Mickey Rourke's character in this film.
  • Very good. I hardly get emotional when watching a trailer. Hopefully it won't be a limited release. This and MIlk should be an awesome way to end the year.
  • Beautiful.
