The Wrestler Movie Trailer

Fox Searchight has finally released a movie trailer for Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler. You’ve heard the buzz, Mickey Rourke’s performance is Oscar worthy. The Wrestler is, without a doubt, one of the best films of this year. I’m confident that it will grace many critic top 10’s come late December. The music track that Bruce Springstein wrote for the film is used front and center, and it is really amazing how well it works over clips from the film. Please leave your thoughts in the comments below. I would like to hear what you think of the trailer.

Official Plot Synopsis: Back in the late ’80s, Randy “The Ram” Robinson (Mickey Rourke) was a headlining professional wrestler. Now, twenty years later, he ekes out a living performing for handfuls of diehard wrestling fans in high school gyms and community centers around New Jersey. Estranged from his daughter (Evan Rachel Wood) and unable to sustain any real relationships, Randy lives for the thrill of the show and the adoration of his fans. However, a heart attack forces him into retirement. As his sense of identity starts to slip away, he begins to evaluate the state of his life — trying to reconnect with his daughter, and striking up a blossoming romance with an exotic dancer (Marisa Tomei) who is ready to start a new life. Yet all this cannot compare to the allure of the ring and passion for his art, which threatens to pull Randy “The Ram” back into his world of wrestling. Director Darren Aronofsky presents a powerful portrait of a battered dreamer, who despite himself and the odds stacked against him, lives to be a hero once again in the only place he considers home – inside the ring. THE WRESTLER had its North American premiere at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival and won the Golden Lion at the 2008 Venice Film Festival.

Watch the trailer in High Definition on Apple. The Wrestler hits theaters beginning on December 17th 2008.

  • Marry me, Darren.

I just saw this last week at the Denver Film Festival. It's really damn good. A pretty penetrating look at contemporary independent wrestling and the character is such a pitch perfect creation, based on Rourke's life and that of other fallen talents.

I loved it. It's sad, funny, violent, and heartfelt.

I can't wait to see it again.
  • sideshowRaheem
Yes, but Jake wont be seeing any money for it. If anybody wants to see the real life story this is borrowing from they should check out the documentary "Beyond the Matt" it really is heart breaking because Jakes story doesn't have a happy ending.
  • Looks great, really. I wanna see it (no release date for my country, though). Anyway, I trust Aronofsky..
  • this is on my list of must see, along with Synecdoche, New York and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

is there any buzz on the clint mansell score?
  • looks like the film this year that will make me bust out the tears
  • Adam
Caught this one in Toronto, and I can safely say that it was the best movie I've seen this year so far. Sorry, Dark Knight and Wall-E, but Mickey Rourke Ram Jammed you guys into second and third.

Good thing the trailer didn't spoil the best line in the movie

Mickey Rourke's another solid performance since Sin City, it's 100% sure an Oscar Nod for him.
  • SlappyJones
The best actor of his generation gets back in the game ! Can't wait for it.
Now I don't have to keep watching Diner,Pope of Greenwich Village,Angel Heart,Barfly etc. etc over and over.

the score is very subdued in the wrestler... quite the contrast compared to mansell's previous collaborations with aronofsky. i think it works well though keeping with the tone of this film. there are moments, in particular some nice subtle guitar work.
  • Daniel Nelson
Great trailer looks a lot like the Jake the Snake story plot form the documentary Beyond The Mat. And Todd Barry as Rourke's boss looks great.
  • This is my definite "can't miss" movie of the season. Looks amazing
  • jason B
yup. it looks like it delivers everything i've been hoping it would. $100 says i cry at some opint in the film - i'm a sucker for a tear-jerking film.

Its got quite documentary type feel to it. Definitely going to be seeing this one.
  • Wow, looks inspiring...Can't wait to see this one.
  • The whole film feels like a documentary. There are moments when you have to remind yourself that you're watching a fictional film.
  • Everyone should go rent Beyond the Mat before seeing this film. It should be a requirement.
  • That looks awesome. Too bad I'll either have to either bootleg it or drive two and a half hours (if I'm lucky) to see it.
  • Dman
Looks great! love the boss in the trailer. Can't wait for this now. The other short trailers didn't do justice.
  • Saw it at NY Film Festival, phenomenal ... Rourke is at the level of Nicholson in Cuckoo's Nest, Brando as Godfather. Dustin Hoffman as The Graduate. Duvall in Apocalypse Now. Paul Newman as Cool Hand Luke. Pesci in Goodfellas. Robert Shaw in Jaws. DeNiro as Raging Bull
  • Anomaly
Looks great. Really looking forward to this ever since that three-part interview that was on here.
  • Psbp
I saw a screening of this at Angelika Dallas with Aronofsky and Marisa Tomei doing a QandA afterwards.
It was awesome. Definitely a much different movie than I thought it would be. It felt very natural without any forced mundane drama.
  • littledude
Looks really good. Definitely drew my interest up.
  • Cody
I cannot wait for this film!
  • Wow. The music with the footage was amazing. Finally, a true piece of art coming to the screen. Can't wait to see this!!!

I wasn't drinking this Kool-Aid that /film had been serving for a while, but this trailer...Well cut, really makes this movie look fantastic.

    <Takes a sip> Oh now I get it.
  • This will be great. Rourke will be nominated for an Oscar. This could really be a comeback project for him. I was never really a fan but this should open up a lot of opportunities for him in the future.
  • Sean
The Boss makes everything better. This film looks amazing.
  • @ Solid

This looks to be a great movie. Can't wait to see it.
  • zinnian

  • it looks so good. I want to see this one, Slumdog Millionaire, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and MILK.
  • Looks amazing, hopefully I'll get to see a screening of it in SF on Sunday.
  • Ryan
That blew me away. Never have I cared about anything to do with wrestling until just now.
  • I have high hopes for this movie. I'm an on and off fan of Aronofsky's work, but I think the Wrestler could turn out to be a heart-felt film with more than a few surprise performances. I like Mickey Rourke, don't get me wrong, but I never saw him playing this kind of role...and from what I've seen, he's done a pretty good job with it.
  • Excellent trailer, I cannot wait to see this. I have a feeling this could become my favorite film of the year.
  • Beautiful.
  • Very good. I hardly get emotional when watching a trailer. Hopefully it won't be a limited release. This and MIlk should be an awesome way to end the year.
  • Jack
anyone who hasn't checked out "Beyond the Mat" definitely should. its a documentary following a few different wrestlers including Jake the Snake who's life seems to be very much like Mickey Rourke's character in this film.
  • Solid
It's like the story of my life. Gotta see this. I'm a lonely guy with nothing going for me too incase you were wondering.
  • i wish i had known that marisa was gonna be stripping in the trailer before i watched it here at work, lol. i hope no one noticed... this looks pretty good, it has definitely grown on me.
  • That trailer is put together rather well. Not that I needed it to convince me or ruin it for me I was still going to check this out once it was released.
  • free kool-aid? i didnt know there was kool-aid. where can i get mine? i love kool-aid.
  • Saw it Wednesday night and interviewed Darren and Marisa Thursday morning. Fantastic movie. Definitely in my top 5 for this year. I think any nominations beyond Best Actor will depend on how well Fox Searchlight runs their campaign.

When I saw the scene where Mickey and Evan are talking at Asbury Park and he starts to cry I thought "This is the scene they'll show at the Oscars when they read 'Mickey Rourke for The Wrestler.'"
  • Oh, the Boss is a lock for Best Original Song, too.
  • the last bampf
fuk yeh. aronofsky aronofsky aronofsky. the best guy around these days.
haven't even seen this yet, but i can't wait for his next film.
  • Justin Craig
If that movie is half as well done as this 3 minute trailer, then it's going to be incredible. Without a shadow of a doubt, Mickey Rourke is the perfect actor to play that part. He looks and sounds exactly like a washed up wrestler ought to and he seems to play the character with a grace that couldn't have been matched by any other actor. If the oscar buzz hasn't started yet then it will after this one's wide release.
