for the second time in 3 days, complaining about a hired screenwriter has started - before said screenwriter has even begun to write!! the first was the smallville guys & robotech.

the funny thing is that in the past i'd be one of the blind-complainers, but i was changed by this whole terminator 4 buisness. i was railing against McG the minute he was announced as director...but the writers at /film (thankfully) encouraged us readers to be patient and have some blind faith in the project - which certainly seems to be paying off. so we give patience to Mc-fucking-G, but not the young writer who gave us 'the cell' & 'i am legend'?!?! i happened to love i am legend, and while the cell wasn't perfect, it was a solid attempt at ambitious cinema/storytelling. yes posiedon sucked, but it's not like his track record is that long or bad. did you guys know he's currently writing 'thor' as well?

naturally, this 'oldboy' remake will NEVER hold up to the real deal, but spielberg and smith (if thats who ends up doing it) are certainly people to get behind, so i'll be waiting until i see doom on the horizon before i give up on it. lately i've been thinking its a tacky habit to pre-emptively shoot down certain films, as hollywood is always suprising us with new or 'comeback' talent - not that this guys has to comeback from anything.

bottom line: if it sucks, i'll be one of the first people to say how disappointed i am...but maybe this remake will be one of the few that properly remakes an asian classic, since for the most part the rest are sadly butchered.

This can not be the flagship that puts Speilberg and Smith together.

did you even see the movie? Speilberg is a good filmmaker yes, but he has a very different style from Chan Wook Park. and he's gonna FAIL.

In some fairness there was an hr of footage to Poseidon cut out of the film before its release so the script could have been a lot more fleshed out. Not that I think the guy is any great talent! Good screenwriting is a rare commodity indeed!

Worst idea ever!! First of all, Oldboy is amazing and shouldn't be remade, and second of all i think spielberg is way too over-rated.

Speilberg going hardcore would be interesting to see although as we know he and Smith dont seem to have a mean, deranged bone in their bodies.

I feel the same way. I'm just shocked that Spielberg would hire someone that bad. I mean, I was forced to watch Poseidon with a group of friends, and I remember thinking to myself, "wow, these characters really are fillers to connect the action scenes." And, "wow, this dialogue is awful."

I completely understand what you are saying, but I think half the reason everyone is so pissed off is that it could be made into a halfway decent remake, if the right people were involved. I'm not completely against a remake, but if this piece of shit gets made, it means no one else can give it a try.

Stop whining. My god, it's not that the original gets destroyed, when this one is released. NOBODY forces you to watch it. Not even a teaser or trailer. I really enjoyed the original with its haunting athmosphere and menace. But I am also very interested to see Spielbergs approach.

Look at it this way: When you like a song and suddenly some plastic pop singer covers it in the most awful way. Why does that change anything? Just listen to the original, simply forget the cover and laugh silently about all the stupid people who only get the cover, but not the original (yes that implies, that I think Spielbergs version will be "hollywoodized", but I think Spielberg knows, that he can't make an Oldboy remake and make it harmless.

He has to make it so his kids can watch it.

This is interesting. I wonder how much WORK he'll actually do. I mean with a property like OLD BOY that's already got everything established, what's the adaptation to do? Soften it up and make it palatable for US audiences? Change the big reveal to a different thing? Make Will Smith's character more sympathetic? It might be better to get a fairly innocuous writer to do the adaptation...
