Screenwriter Mark Protosevich is in talks to write the American remake of Oldboy for director Steven Speilberg. Star Will Smith recommended Protosevich for the project after working with him on I Am Legend. Yes, your worst fears have come true, the guy who wrote the 2006 adaptation of Poseidon might be writing the script for the English-language adaptation of Old Boy. This can’t be good news.

In the 2003 South Korean film, a man named Dae-Su is locked in a hotel room for 15 years without knowing why or who is holding him captive. He is suddenly released, given money, clothes and a cellphone and is sent on journey for revenge. The film won the Grand Prix at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival and was highly praised by Jury President Quentin Tarantino. Praised for it’s intense visuals and twisted story, Oldboy was met with positive reviews in the States, and is currently getting an 82% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and an 8.3 user rating on IMDB, for a #117 placement on the top 250 films of all time.

this confirms there is no god.

never could get why everyone is so excited about this film.

This is interesting. I wonder how much WORK he'll actually do. I mean with a property like OLD BOY that's already got everything established, what's the adaptation to do? Soften it up and make it palatable for US audiences? Change the big reveal to a different thing? Make Will Smith's character more sympathetic? It might be better to get a fairly innocuous writer to do the adaptation...
  • That's terrible news :-( Oldboy is prefrect the way it is and it shouldn't be touched
  • J. Luna
Actually this might be the greatest news ever. This ups the chance that the project will get stuck in development hell.
  • Mike
Anyone want to start a petition against this and send it to Spielberg/Smith?...
  • AWH HELL NO THAT NIGGAH DOING HIS SISTER?
  • Dave
    Ha!
Can't wait to see Smith's epic "performance"

    "Awwwwww, hell no!!!"
"I have to get me one of these!!!!!!!"

Any bets on where these lines will appear in the movie????

Hey, Spielberg! Here is a dollar you will not take from me, motherf****er!
  • "I Am Legend" was good, hence, a benefit of the doubt.
  • He has to make it so his kids can watch it.

Stop whining. My god, it's not that the original gets destroyed, when this one is released. NOBODY forces you to watch it. Not even a teaser or trailer. I really enjoyed the original with its haunting athmosphere and menace. But I am also very interested to see Spielbergs approach.

Look at it this way: When you like a song and suddenly some plastic pop singer covers it in the most awful way. Why does that change anything? Just listen to the original, simply forget the cover and laugh silently about all the stupid people who only get the cover, but not the original (yes that implies, that I think Spielbergs version will be "hollywoodized", but I think Spielberg knows, that he can't make an Oldboy remake and make it harmless.
  • NO! Bad Doggy BAD!
  • I completely understand what you are saying, but I think half the reason everyone is so pissed off is that it could be made into a halfway decent remake, if the right people were involved. I'm not completely against a remake, but if this piece of shit gets made, it means no one else can give it a try.

    W-T-F!
  • just when i thought this movie couldnt get any better..
  • YouKnow
    What a hilarious joke.
  • Harry Lime
I feel the same way. I'm just shocked that Spielberg would hire someone that bad. I mean, I was forced to watch Poseidon with a group of friends, and I remember thinking to myself, "wow, these characters really are fillers to connect the action scenes." And, "wow, this dialogue is awful."
  • Oi Vey
I agree. Fincher can handle Oldboy.
  • nelson
i personally feel it should not be touched i dont care if its :

    Dave Fincher
    ridley scott
    Scorsese
    Darren Aronofsky

making it i think its a bad idea oldboy imo cant be topped its so perfect already
  • Mag
Why couldn't they cast a Asian Actor !?!?

    And I'm Hispanic
  • Well just as long as Speilberg and Smith are involved it shouldn't be that bad...dunno if it will be good as the original, but I don't think they will fuck this up...
  • Captain Awesome
Just hammer nails into my dick already. Why prolong the wait?

At this point, they might as well just let Spielberg direct it so he can put Alien pods into it mounted with canons that shoot Crystal Skulls that turn people into underwater faeries.
  • hahahahahaha
  • Steve
    Wow. From bad to worse.

I had hopes that this might not be a total clusterfuck, but It's just not looking good.
  • PowerfulDog
Spielberg is 10x the director Chan-Wook Park is.

Is that quote on the poster real? That's pretty embarrassing.
  • I think this is the only Worst Idea Ever, that I FULLY agree with. :(
  • Whereas Darren Aronofsky's ROBOCOP is my most anticipated remake, apparently this is now my least.
  • Dixxy
This cant be happening. I have been hyping this project ever since I heard Speilberg was talking to Will Smith about it. I thought, "that could be pretty cool actually"....then they bring this baffoon in? Poseiden?? Dearly beloved.

    Im taking D_James advise.
  • gah
Speilberg going hardcore would be interesting to see although as we know he and Smith dont seem to have a mean, deranged bone in their bodies.
  • Worst idea ever!! First of all, Oldboy is amazing and shouldn't be remade, and second of all i think spielberg is way too over-rated.
  • I don't care how bad they fuck this up. Opening night, I'll be at home watching Oldboy on DVD. They can never take that away from me.
  • stop please
god no! stop touching these awesome korean movies america!
  • Watanabex
*sigh* Watchmen induced nerd boner suddenly goes flaccid upon reading these dire news
  • In some fairness there was an hr of footage to Poseidon cut out of the film before its release so the script could have been a lot more fleshed out. Not that I think the guy is any great talent! Good screenwriting is a rare commodity indeed!

    Chuck
  • WHAT?!?! There was a Bollywood remake of oldboy??!?!
  • kumbamoses
Ok ok ok. Now the project is officially doomed.
  • jack
The news just keeps getting worse and worse on this...
  • robu
lol. Hopefully it won't be as bad as Zinda, the bollywood version.
  • this is a fucking nightmare coming true.
  • yes, let's do it. There's a petition against ROCKY HORROR remake so.... do it
  • whats the fucking point of the remake? why not appreciate the original film?

I don't fucking get the point of remakes.
  • i know! they've been white-washing all the remakes of East Asian films... WTF.
  • did you even see the movie? Speilberg is a good filmmaker yes, but he has a very different style from Chan Wook Park. and he's gonna FAIL.
  • a film like OLDBOY would never fly well in America.
  • yukita
this is oh so right. all of america would be up in arms about everything in wrong in this movie without realizing that it makes it so, so right.
  • those fucking morons don't know what they're doing. Fucking CUNTS!!!!
  • theuglyspirit
Well now I have faith in this project after hearing this news.
  • This can not be the flagship that puts Speilberg and Smith together.
