The Chronicles of Narnia scribes Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely are in negotiations to write the screenplay for Marvel Studios’ The First Avenger: Captain America. Last week the company announced that Joe Johnston had been brought aboard the project to direct. Markus and McFeely’s pitch must have been good, because none of their previous writing credits indicate that they are fitting for a World War II superhero film.

The First Avenger: Captain America is set to hit theaters on May 6th 2011, just two months before Marvel’s superhero team-up film The Avengers (July 15th 2011). Considering the films will be interconnected, this means Johnson will need to cast his Steve Rogers / Captain America as soon as a script is completed. A previously leaked plot synopsis follows:

“Born during the Great Depression, Steve Rogers grew up a frail youth in a poor family. Horrified by the newsreel footage of the Nazis in Europe, Rogers was inspired to enlist in the army. However, because of his frailty and sickness, he was rejected. Overhearing the boy’s earnest plea, General Chester Phillips offered Rogers the opportunity to take part in a special experiment… Operation: Rebirth. After weeks of tests, Rogers was at last administered the “Super-Soldier Serum” and bombarded by “vita-rays.” Steve Rogers emerged from the treatment with a body as perfect as a body can be and still be human. Rogers was then put through an intensive physical and tactical training program. Three months later, he was given his first assignment as Captain America. Armed with his indestructible shield and and battle savvy, Captain America has continued his war against evil both as a sentinel of liberty and leader of the Avengers.”

And thus is the day, Captain America went down the hole.

    Fantastic Four, here we come.
  • Christopher M
Channing Tatum talked to Cinematical about loving the idea about playing Captain America....

I think if he gets cast we can all blame Cinematical for giving him the idea....
  • Question of the moment: What are you more concerned about - this news or the news about the "Gossip Girl" writer penning the Young X-Men movie?

I think this news pales in comparison to that previous crap... But really - I don't think these two guys are THAT big of a problem... Marvel just seems to have chosen very, very interesting creative people for Captain America. Maybe they're saving the big guns for The Avengers??
  • I agree. I absolutely hated.............nay...............I loathed the Narnia movies.
  • I don't think this movie should be dark at all. Captian America is all about Patriotism so it needs to shine red white and blue.
  • This might just work if everyone can stop comparing Captain America to Narnia.
  • I was OK with Johnston at the helm, but if these are the screenwriters, count me out.
  • RobN
i hope this movie is dark and gritty

they should have brubaker write it
  • im sorry but i am really, really sick of this superhero movie crap. I know Slash Film is all about superhero movies but.. meh.

I've had enough of it this year.
  • Hendo
I have mixed feelings on this. As a Narnia fan while I liked the movie, it really pissed me off that they didn't use some of the best lines from the book and the way they rearranged some stuff... but they didn't "put their own spin" on the story so as long as they stay as close to the source material as can be then I give an unsteady "ok"
  • Also not a fan of the Narnia movies. My thoughts on the Marvel franchises lie on a fence. I have been impressed, and I have also been hulked.
  • SRL
I agree. Narnia screenwriters. Bad idea.
  • I really like Prince Caspian, I thought it was well done.
  • I loved the books as a child, but could not get over the vision of the movies. It is possible that the actors and characters just didn't translate into what I had imagined growing up.
  • nelson
captain America material isn't actually breathtaking he is a pretty boring character imo its not like you need William Monahan to write this or something i love both narnia films so i like this
  • Captain Awesome
"Overhearing the boy’s earnest plea, General Chester Phillips offered Rogers the opportunity to take part in a special experiment… Operation: Rebirth."

Massive spoon gagging going on here. Ugh...
  • inzader
    Facepalm.

You make it sound like Captain America is going to turn out like some gritty, hard-hitting, political film. If that's the case. Then his origin would be a lot more controversial than some scientist hearing his "patriotic plea's" to become a soldier. Marvel will want to take the safest approach to this character possible.

They want to sell merchandise. They can also go the other direction and make this film one of the most jingoistic pieces of cinema next to the US Armed Forces commercials that play before the movies we watch.

Hell, while Marvel is at it. They should speak to the US armed forces about integrating the character into their recruitment campaigns.
  • Do they have to be the screenwriters? If so, I might not like this movie...
  • Sir Phobos
Than don't go see them. Its as easy as that. I mean seriously I don't like romantic comedies with Owen Wilson but you don't see me posting on forums about it. I just don't watch them. Its as easy as that so STFU.
  • Sir Phobos
Wow, I am pumped. Captain America has actually become one of my favorite characters in the last couple of years. I will be happy to see a movie about him. But in all actuality they are probably gonna fuck this one up. I have no idea how or where Marvel pulled Iron Man or the Incredible Hulk. They are notorious for having something cool and fucking it in the ass when they make a movie. Marvel is too interested in making a movie with BIG NAMES and not making a good movie.
  • LOL...damn you Cinematical!!! Damn you!!!
  • I haven't seen the Narnia films but I heard from reliable sources that they pretty much sucked. So...I'll have to say Captain America could potentially be completely shitty when held in the hands of a crappy writer. What happened to all the talented folks?
  • AlexanderSupertramp
What's with the Narnia hate? They were very successful films, ESPECIALLY the first one. I've got high hopes for ol' Cap. I think he's in good hands. The filmmaker's don't have to be great. Some of you may have not liked the Narnia films but you can't always hold a track record against someone. And it's not like we've got Uwe Boll behind the wheel of this.
  • can be dark and still patriotic, dudes fighting nazis!
  • There no real inner demons about fighting nazis.
  • ohhh BURN, britney!! i fucking hate her crappy music.
  • there's no need to be rude, you fucking cunt. go STFU yourself.
  • yeah... ditto on that.
  • i dont want cap himself to be dark, idk when i picture this film i picture the first issue of the ultimates, and that issue was dark and gritty looking and amazing
  • The X-Men news is from May, I've gotten over that. Plus, Josh has done some good work on Chuck and The O.C. But the fact that he declined to direct might say something. That said, I really disliked both of the Narnia films...
  • ret.ro.bot
I think that this is pretty good news. Remember, they didn't just do the Narnia movies (which I felt were quite well written actually)... they have also done: The Life and Death of Peter Sellers and You Kill Me. Plus they haven't ever done anything without being a working "team" and they aren't even the sole writers that did the Narnia films.

I say give these guys the benefit of the doubt. This could be great or it could be terrible. The fact is we won't know until it is out. Will we?
  • Are we allowed to have a Captain America in this PC nation? Shouldn't it be "General United Nations"? Or something to that degree?
  • Success is not a measurement of quality, otherwise, Britney Spears would be "better" than a lot of other talented musicians that are widely regarded as better.
  • You're not alone.
  • Dave
It stands to reason that the recent run of very cool comic book movies will come to an end soon like every other genre phase. This Marvel orgy looks like it will do the trick
  • Sir Phobos
ah poor thing, getting a bit pissy. Go get laid
  • Dude, why are you so down on Josh Schwartz? Have you ever watched Gossip Girl? The writing on that show isn't bad. And Schwartz has shown himself to have some serious geek cred in the past. He's got a lot of potential. Think about it... Jon Favreau took Iron Man fresh off doing Zathura.

As for these two writers, I think we also forget that they collaborated on 'You Kill Me', a film that was highly underrated. I'm willing to wait and see how it comes out, especially with Joe Johnston directing (ugh).

So to answer your question Alex, I am not bothered by either decision. Because you never know what is going to happen. One of my favorite writers, Melissa Rosenberg, who has done some of the best work I've ever seen with 'Dexter', was tapped to adapt Twilight -- and that movie was a massive bore. Figure that out.
  • really I liked the movie
