Fox Needs a Director For X-Men: First Class

Back in May, Gossip Girl creator Josh Schwartz let it slip that he was writing a young X-Men spin-off. 20th Century Fox has remained mum, but now Variety has confirmed the project and is reporting that Schwartz declined an offer to direct the film.

Taking the name of a 2006 comic book series, X-Men: First Class will center on the other teenage characters attending the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning. The comic line-up includes Iceman, Rogue, Angel, Colossus, Jubilee and Shadowcat, but the film will probably feature cameos from some of the main X-Men line-up. Not much is known beyond that, as Fox is not releasing any details. But it seems to me that they are looking for a director to helm the project.

fuck fox they fucked up with x-men3 so now they tryin everything tobring back the x-men franchies fuck them guys
  • Anthony
x3 was great. people get on bandwagons too much because everyone else hated it.

this new film needs joss whedon.
  • Zinc
Could they just get Bryan Singer?
  • the last bampf
    *insert snark here*
  • How mcuh would fanboys freak if Kevin Smith signed on? X-men was never my bag, really.
  • I have obtained an excerpt from the script.

Angel: Have you heard Vampire Weekend?
Rogue: No, I am from Mississippi. There's no such thing as cool people there, and, like, "indie rock" is some sort of foreign word there.
Angel: Oh my god, you just have to. They are, like, the greatest band ever.
  • Mick J
No, it really did suck balls, bandwagon hating or not. Not a good film.
  • Michael Keaton
My brain is like oatmeal. I yelled at Kenny today for coloring outside the lines! Megan and I are starting to watch the same TV shows, and I'm liking them! I'm losing it.
  • Adam
X3 was almost as bad as Spider-Man 3 and by bad I mean Sawdust and mildew bad.
  • I will direct this movie. I accept.

Rule number one, not a single character will say "like" in any context other than likening two concepts. Rule number 2, there will be no popular music. Rule number three everyone will not act like everyone else, but will instead have unique personalities of their own.

Whoops I just got fired. My ideas were too radical for the studio and I risked alienating the audience.
  • Marvin S
So are they just taking the name X-men: First Class or the story too? I don't read the comic but I'm pretty sure it focuses on the early days of the X-Men with Cyclops, Jean, Beast, and others.
  • I think they are just taking the name. The spin-off will mostly consist of non-A-list X-Men characters
  • Marvin S
Okay, well that could be okay in the right hands. Rather see a movie about the early days of the X-men though
  • something tells me this is not going to be that great
  • sigh. Still more superhero movies... there is no originality in Hollywood anymore.
  • theuglyspirit
I'm still interested a take on X-Men that is closer to the comic book's universe. And if they do it with the right characters this could be something I'd want to see.
  • lmao. Fucking Halle Berry ruined Storm for me. She was so boring and generic... god I wanted to kill Bryan Singer.
  • sounds terrible. Where did u find this script?
  • i hated X3, too. fucking assholes ruined the series for me!!!
  • non-A list X-Men characters? Ewww. like who? Jubilee, the annoying chick? Or Sunspot, who has a super lame power? Or cannonball, the douche-bag from Kentucky?

THE NEW MUTANTS is a joke and always will be.
  • Captain Awesome
So far. It looks like Singer is still locked for the Superman follow-up. I don't think he's going to go back to X-Men at this point.
  • michael
it's an adaptation of a literary work. should hollywood never make a work based on a previously published work? cry about the lack of originality... then go and make a film that IS original.
  • Sir Phobos
As far as I am concerned, I am pumped. As long as they take time to put some actual quality into it. And there will be no Bryan Singer. Fox screwed the pooch on that one. But it doesn't mean that they can't get somebody who actually can direct. Problem is all this shitty comic book movies get directors and writers that aren't fans of the comics, but know the bare minimum. They need to find someone who actually likes the series. That way it won't be full of shit.
  • You always have your independent films if you don't like big blockbusters.
  • I would happily direct it for free (or however much the gas costs to drive to and from Hollywood)!!!
  • Richard Johnson
    Let 'em know i'm free.
  • This could be good if handled by people who care about the beginning of the X-Men; however I have a feeling it'll just turn into a teen targeted movie. In fact this idea sounds almost like a reboot sine X3 was such a complete mess. I've never been able to stomach a 2nd viewing. They had this wonderful storyline of the Phoenix and they screwed it up. I didn't expect the story play out exactly like the comic, but the way they handled it was trash.

Angry Broomstick - I agree with you on the ruining of Storm. First with the casting of Halle Barry and then writing the character horribly. Storm is one of my favorite X-men with a wonderful back story and a strong personality, there is a reason she is one of the leaders, but Singer did no justice the character and neither did the screenwriter.
  • Captain Awesome
Most likely under Diablo Cody's pillow.
  • Oi Vey
I know that X3 was kinda fun but the script was awful. It's not a bandwagon thing. You can tell that they wrote on the fly. Killing all these characters does not equal drama. Nor does making Wolverine into the leader type, which takes away from the whole point of his character.
  • Oi Vey
So let me guess. Rogue doesn't get with Gambit right?
  • I have a feeling that they will want to stay in the same Universe that has already been created. (At least I hope they will anyway) If that is the case they my have to stick with the laws of continuity, which will mean no Iceman, Rogue, Shadowcat, but younger versions of Beast, Jean, Cyclops, Storm etc. I don't see the point in creating an X-Men Universe and setting spin-offs within that timeline (Wolverine 15 years before X1, Magneto showing before X-Men creation) Just to have a reboot a few years later, telling us to forget that timeline and focus on a new one.

  • no, It's just that we've had a HUGE rash of superhero movies in the past 3 years. I wish that there would be more original films at least, like JUNO. that was a refreshing change from white male superheros. Am sick of it all!
  • of course.
  • doug
    Great: X-Men 90210. Oh, Jesssssus...
  • Nish
So I guess this wont be set in the same universe as the X-Men films? If it will, whats the point, everyone prety much dead!
  • fanboy d
the 'first class' pun doesn't work if it's not, y'know, about the FIRST CLASS of x-men!!!!
  • X3 was terrible.

Do you really want me to list the mind numbing failures individually?

And apologies in advance to Peter. But someone saying that X-Men three was "great" is just begging to be contradicted. Heavily and diligently contradicted.
  • fanboy d
anyone who thinks brett ratner can make a better movie than sam raimi needs their head examined
  • fanboy d
yeah, they need to let the franchise cool for a few years before we end up with the batman and robin of the series, which hopefully isn't the annoyingly title x-men origins: wolverine...
  • The X-men movie were never about Storm. It was always a Wolverine movie.
  • Jubilee was the focus of the Cartoon Series and that worked just fine.
  • Has everyone seen the Star Trek 90210? Here is its sequel.
  • not bad..........
