First Look: Watchmen Video Game

Tiscali Games has the first screenshots from the Watchmen video game, Watchmen: The End is Nigh.

Developed by Deadline Games (Total Overdose), the episodic game will follow Rorschach and Night Owl in 1972.

Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment will be releasing the game for download for the PC, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. The first game is expected in March 2009, around the time of the film’s theatrical release. A follow-up will hit in time for the film’s home video release.

  • THE ANTISNAKE HAS ATTACKED!!!!
Wow, WB is making a mockery of such a beautiful comic book.
  • Bigby Wolf
Can't wait for the film. This brings out my inner-Alan Moore though.
Next Halloween, kids will be dressed as Rorshach....
  • Doesn't look bad for an episodic game. If memory serves this will be the first 3d episodic game with conventional graphics.

from what i've heard of this game, i'm actually impressed.

for one, it's a prequal and not something even attempting to tell Watchmen's complex story, which is good.

another is how much effort they're putting into the game.

for Rorschach, you can kill enemies and once you've done enough, you build up your rage meter, i guess to go all out on them.

and if he finds weapons on the ground, he'll use them.

For Nite Owl, you don't kill anyone, you just knock them out or hurt them or use your gadgets on them.

I forgot who the villain is, but i remember for sure that he's menitioned in the graphic novel.

all of this info was in this months EGM.

chronicles of riddick: escape from butcher bay.

the movie sucked, but that game was AMAZING.

    it got terrific reviews.

granted it wasn't directly based off the movie, it was a prequel, but still, that game was amazing.
  • oh, and in one of the screens, Rorschach's kneeing some guy in the balls.

    fuckin bad ass.
  • What? No trailer cut to a "Radiohead" song in slow-mo yet.... Snyder is Slaking! : p
  • Jive Turkey
    RAAARWL!
  • Dan Berry
Well. I'm completely psyched about this movie. I can't describe how awesome it will be. But i had no knowledge of a video game until now. Aaaand i don't know how i feel about that. I read the graphic novel.. It's literature. It's beyond comics. It's a masterpiece. I just see this video game stuff exploiting it. And that's bullshit. I don't know how I feel about it.
  • Chase
Watchmen was more about a specific point than being cool or action oriented. for me this game does not exist and it is a shame that it does no matter how much I do not wish it to be.
  • Chase
Wait...its a prequel? Actually that isn't so bad I guess.
  • yeh, normally I'd be against it - but a prequel could actually work (purely on an entertainment/enjoyability level)
  • nelson
looks like ps1 graphics tho lolol
  • nelson
gig you ever play a ps1?
  • YoungZe
Playin' as Rorschach? I can't resist.
  • Palmer
Wow, Alan Moore already hates it when his comics are adapted into movies. Now they're going to do this with games?
  • YoungZe
So the screenshots led me to believe it's somekind of Brawler like the The Warriors for PS2, which was a damn fine game. If this one features the same kind of fighting system then i'm all for it. But still, a Free-Roam game would have been nice. You know, you run around as Rorschach investigate, "interogate", search for clues and find the right people to punish. That would be awesome. I'm still concerned about choosing Deadline games as the devs. I mean they did Total Overdose, nice but mediocre. I wouldn't want the game to be mediocre. Watchmen deserves more.
  • Wall•E Plays Pong
Rorschach pre-dog incident and Dan Dreiberg in his prime makes a little more sense than one based off the movie, because basically they were beating up thugs and gangs in relatively harmless old superheroic fashion.

However, I'm reminded of Veidt's action figure line in the comics and how even HE felt it was inappropriate to try and market these characters because they were so f-ed up and weird. Maybe a Bubastis videogame where you roam the cavernous halls of Karnak waiting for Adrian to come home would be more appropriate. You could chase frogs in the Vivarium and pee on the servants for fun. GTA style, y'know what I mean?
  • Wall•EPlaysPong
Oh, and this new comment system sucks. My name turns into "Wall-E plays Po" now because Pong is too long for it to handle with spaces. C'mon, that's not cool right? What's a po?
And it doesn't recognize my name in the selection bar unless I'm registered for Intense Debate. Groan.
  • DOWNVOTED FOR DISRESPECTING /FILM
  • I think this game could be good if it doesn't go into the realm of changing the story for the sake of action...
  • WALL-E: registering for ID is easy, even september 11th could do it. :P
  • Rorschach is my hero
    ooooh new Slashfilm.

Game looks sick, especially for a downloadable game.
  • Jaboo224
Another movie game that will try to meet the deadline of the movie. Its a huge result for failure in my eyes. Also i think playing as a watchmen defeats the purpose of the story :| i mean technically isnt the novel about making our own opinion on it rather than siding with a character?
  • Alex
It's written by Len Wein (editor of Watchmen, creator of Wolverine, Swamp Thing) with Dave Gibbons and Zack Snyder working on it, should be good. And it has Co-op!
  • The new comment system is part of a larger new design launch coming later this month :P
  • gah
Forget all of you, I'm siding with Alan Moore on this.
  • evilnik
tell me one game based on a movie which has beeen good...oh wiat which has been decent at the best?

    its just whoring out :(
  • Cool!! That game looks pretty real
Can't wait to play it :)
  • Rorschach is my hero
    Awesome, can't wait.
  • krackajap
    Goldeneye
  • IronMatt13
In other words, we're getting that new skin that no one liked?
  • Nope, a different site design all together.
  • dlb
    Terrible Idea.

    @ HolyShitMatt

ummm...what about Half-Life 2? Hell, even the Penny Arcade games have 3D graphics.

Look, I love WATCHMEN, it's my favorite book. I believe games are as potent a storytelling medium as any (in my opinion, the plot of Bioshock trounces most recent movies in the storytelling department). If this game were being made independent of the movie (like if the movie itself was non-existent), thus not under pressure to meet a release deadline, and were being made by a respected developer (Rockstar North, Irrational, Ubisoft Montreal, or Valve, though Valve's specialty is FPS) then I would be expecting great things. However, though it isn't targeting the film's release per se, the first episode will be rushed out the door before the DVD release while WATCHMEN is still fresh in the public's mind, and anyone who plays games knows that rushed to release licensed games are utter crap. Also, the choice of developer, Deadline, makers of the wholly unremarkable Max Payne clone, Total Overdose, does not inspire faith that this game will be a fitting tribute to the source material. If Irrational (now 2K Boston), the guys behind Bioshock and the superb Freedom Force games, were in the developer's seat, then I could see this being great (the Freedom Force games are the best superhero games ever). The last thing that I don't feel good about is that I, as well as probably most people who are genuinely excited about this game, would prefer if Alan Moore were penning the script (of course, that is an impossibility). Since this game is supposedly striving to be considered Watchmen "canon", I cannot endorse it without at least Moore's blessing. I, like many Watchmen fans, feel any contributions to the canon ought to be written by Moore, or at least have his approval. Now I'm excited for the movie despite Alan Moore's disapproval of it, but Zack Snyder wasn't seeking to change or add to the story (the new ending being the only exception, something I uneasy about). I don't doubt Wein will write a good story, it just won't feel right having story additions added behind Alan's back. So, all in all, this just looks like another piece of merchandising related to the movie, a piece of merchandising that was never asked for and is altogether unnecessary (I mean, was anyone really asking for yet another movie based game). Overall, this just feels much more sacrilege than the movie(although, I still have high hopes for the movie, despite any misgivings I may have about the changed ending).
  • Hans Van Harken
Hey dan, calm your testies down. Now-a-days there are certain things movies NEED to do or else producers feel insecure about how much money the movies will make so they need to fire out video game versions, toys, shirts etc. I don't pay attention to that stuff any more o that stuff, i don't let it effect the movie experience, personally.

    love,
    Your Friend
  • Hans Van Harken
    agreed
  • The Warriors. Since the game sounds like it's kinda like the Warriors i see no reason why it shouldn't succeed.

Oh and the new 007 game is pretty good too. And Spider-Man 2.
