First Look: Johnny Depp as the Madd Hatter?

The image above has been floating around the interwebs today (I’m not sure the exact origin, but I’ve been e-mailed it at least 9 times). Could this be a first look at Johnny Depp as The Madd Hatter in Tim Burton’s 3D adaptation of Alice in Wonderland? I don’t know. It looks pretty fake (or at least you would hope so). I saw some concept art from the film at the Disney showcase in September, and I don’t remember the Hatter looking anything like this. And isn’t The Madd Hatter supposed to be performance captured (ala Beowulf)?

    i dunno, using johnny depp as the mad hatter in his goth take on alice in wonderland seems like SUCH an inspired, original move. it's just good to see burton stepping outside his comfort zone.

    no, the new batman movies wouldn't be this creative and fantastical. The mad hatter in the christian nolan would be some english bloke that wears a baseball cap and a wife beater and is totally crazy like an animal. 'mad hatter'. even though this Tim Burton mad hatter is complete utter poop.

    Nope, Peter this is it. I have a friend who's working on the film as a gaffer, and described Mad Hatter almost to the T as this design.

  • I actually liked his take on Planet of the Apes. But i could be an apologist for Burton

    Wow...I think i might be Burton's truest fan. I think it looks amazing. I know he might not exactly be what all of you have been hoping for, but it's so very creative and imaginitive the way he thinks up all his characters. In my opinion he is one of the few directors and writers that still has some originality left in him. When he does re-makes, he really re-makes them, a little bit more visually,and artistically than anything. But I personally think the pictures looks a little fake, but it is still a beautiful idea. Can't wait for the movie!!!!!

  • whew...i looked like that in college after a weekend of partying. it was called the hunter thompson look. relax, the film will be unique as all burton's work is, but if all you want is a run of the mill, stick to the rules hollywood-type film don't see it.

    It looks very fake. The hand makes no sense and the shadow looks unreal.
    The original image will be found sooner or later and this fake will be exposed as usual.

    I sure hope this is fake! I used to love all of burtans movies when i was growing up, nightmare before Xmas is still one of my all time fav movies. but I have been very let down with the last few (corpse bride, charlie and choclate factory, and sweeny todd) Love the story of alice in wonderland so i hope he dosent ruin this.
