Breaking: Batman Retires

USA Today has a first look at Batman #681, due out November 26th, which concludes Grant Morrison’s Batman R.I.P storyline, where Bruce Wayne decides to retire from crime fighting after being shaken by a secret from his past. Neil Gaiman (Sandman, Beowulf) is penning a two-issue tribute to the character titled Whatever Happend to the Caped Crusader, starting with issue #686 (due in February).

The two issue arc will be some sort of retrospective of Batman’s history, and according to the article, Gaiman will attempt “to reconcile the various versions of Batman, some wisecracking, others brooding, over the Dark Knight’s 69-year history.” I’m not sure exactly what that means but Gaiman says that it has been hard on artist Andy Kubert, who has been asked to draw in so many different styles.

Some might remember that DC Comics asked Watchmen creator Alan Moore to Superman’s first half-century with Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? in 1986, right before the character was retooled. I would expect the same to happen to Batman. I’m predicting that DC Comics new caped crusader will be more along the lines of Christopher Nolan’s version of the Dark Knight.

I'm so gonna check that out.

So are these rumors of DC re-tooling Batman to fit more of the Nolan film version true? Like were going to see the Tumbler in the comics and such?

If so, that would be very cool.
  • so.. is there going to be a new Batman?
  • we've already seen the Tumbler in the comics..
  • The Dark Knight was a HUGE success and I'm pretty sure that DC is gonna re-model Batman after Nolan's version of Batman...

but they already made Batman like that with Arkham Asylum (the 1989 special issue), with his emotional confrontation with the Joker. That was a damn good issue.

HMMM... how about a spoiler tag on this one since as you say this comic isnt out yet.
  • spoilerwarning
Wow way to ruin one of the best batman comics i have read in forever
  • USA Today ran it as a headline, so I think its completely fair game.
  • Batman Beyond???
  • simon2it
I don't think the issue here is if DC is gonna model Batman after Nolas Batman. Since Nolan modelled his Batman after some of the best Batman stories out there.

this is one of the monthly titles that i subscribe to, and i am NOT a fan of this idea at all. let me be clear: i love gaiman writing the two issue 'whatever happened...' arc, the same concept that moore did for kal-el, but the R.I.P. storyline, and getting rid of bruce wayne is not sitting well with me. i worry that it might come off like the 'knightfall' period, where they replace batman the presto - he's back! OR that bruce will really be gone for good.
my brother thinks this is DC's response to marvel bumping off cap america last year, which may be true, but cap is nowhere near as epic/iconic as the bat. for me, it's not the dark knight that i've followed all these years, but rather the man behind the mask has always been the hook (and i feel the exact same way about rogers & barnes in the cap universe - it's just not the same without the original hero). so to think of another guy permanently wearing the cowl REALLY bums me out.

while hero's rise and fall from the dead quite often, sometimes DC doesn't fuck around - yes, superman rose from the dead within a year or so, but barry allen was gone for 23 years(!) before he returned just months ago. the idea of no current/ongoing bruce wayne tales for two decades (or more) is really, really shitty...but i guess we'll find out next week.

    @ cap awesome

i don't think the idea you're asking about - making it more like the nolanverse - is the way they are going. though we won't know for sure til next week, what seems to be happening is that bruce wayne will either call it quits or die. either way, all signs are pointing to the fact that there will be a new batman protecting the streets of gotham. which is another strange thing...why at the peak of batman's pop-culture popularity, would they do this? i'm not buying the 'going out on a high note', argument.
  • DC was planning this storyline for 2 years. Its got nothing to do wit Nolan though. There was a rumour that Bruce was going to die in either RIP or Final Crisis and become one of the New Gods, while the resurrected Jason Todd was going to be the new Batman.__It will be an intresting issue seeing how suprising and crazy the storyline has been so far (and its tie-ins have been great too).__But lets be honest, Bruce will be back in the cape in a year or something. I cant see them really replacing Bruce forever in the continutiy. Although I would be shocked if they did. This is after all the same company that couldnt keep Barry Allen and Jason Todd dead for more than 2 decades.

  • Morrison's arc was all about mystery, and you flat out typed the ending in the title of a front page post.

    Thanks for ruining it
  • Hendo
actually it will probably be a less gritty version than nolan's. I don't read Batman but I did read JL right up until "52" and the whole point of Infinite Crisis was basically to fix continuity AND to soften up some of their character's a bit. Many of the characters, namely Batman had become too gritty in the DC uni and they wanted to peel that away a bit. I don't know if that "happened" already but I really don't see him becoming anymore brooding and dark than he already was. Granted you could very easily make the argument that the current batman was already more gritty than Nolan's.

By the wa,y this 1inch by 1 inch comment box is the worst idea since the Monopoly Movie.

also, i'm not sure i would call this breaking news peter. i heard robin make the same mistake on stern this morning, but this has been an ongoing arc since somewhere around May, and DC had various pictures of the cowl draped over an 'R.I.P.' tombstone at all the 08' cons, and i think even some of the 07' ones. i'm not nitpicking, just saying it's far from breaking news. then again, i guess not everyone reads comics. i dunno, i'm just really bummed about what's inevitably coming.
  • Nate the Great
Hey, can you tell me the ending to all the movies coming out in November too? I really love spoilers.
  • wow
  • The "Breaking" was actually an attempt to make a joke about the newsworthyness of a comic book headline
  • Mr B
Gaiman posted a (albeit tiny) picture of the cover of his and Andy's first issue on his blog. I kinda wondered at the title, makes perfect sense now. I'm really looking forward to Gaiman's work on this now.
  • Thrillhouse77
Reminds me of when Superman died and it was all over the news....those were the days.
  • Thrillhouse77
Wow...way to slap all comic book fans in the face by saying comic books are a joke, Peter. Fantastic stuff.
  • Nawid Ahrary
What the fuck, Peter. You just spoiled the ending to one of the best arcs in years. What the fuck.
  • d
man i knew this was coming...but DANG IT.
  • D
i highly doubt they'll retool batman to be like the dark knight. pick up a comic, he's not really that different anyway.
  • Peter didn't ruin it. It WAS the headline on the news today... anyway since you already know the ending, now here's the fun part: READING ABOUT HOW IT ALL HAPPENS! ;-)
  • "They have no respect for the medium. " LOL, you think the story was USA Today's doing? Nope. DC Comics provided them with the image and the story. Don't blame USA Today or /Film, DC Comics is the one promoting the big plot point.
  • How the heck did he spoil the ending. It's called Batman R.I.P, so wasn't this kind of...inevitable?
  • it's not like Batman is gonna retire forever. They'll bring him back. they always do.

hello, people? Superman died in 1995, but he came back later on.
  • Reason
Allow me to summarize this story. *Ahem*

    "CHA-CHING!!!!"
  • pat
hey, for everyone complaining that he ruined it for you, what was going to happen when you picked up the comic for the first time when it came out? YOU WOULD SEE THE COVER! idiots. It's going to be what happens inside that you don't want to know
  • Jonathan Roig
Fuckin spoiler! COME ON? Seriously I love slashfilm more than any other site on the entire internet. I've been reading Batman Rip. Spoiler alert at least. SHIT.
  • Shame on Paul Levitz and Dan DiDio for letting such a thing happen. Even though it was obvious that they weren't going to kill him since they don't have the gonads to do such a thing (Marvel ftw). But that's BESIDES the point. I was really hoping that Morrison would have manned up and actually killed him.

Sure. He kills Jean but not Bats. *tsktsktsk* Sexist.
  • While I'll agree that there will be a reboot, I highly doubt it will be Nolan's Batman. I'm thinking DC saw what happen when Marvel rebooted the Captain and saw it as an opportunity to do the same for one of their characters. It'll probably be dark but I doubt it will be anything close to Nolan's universe.
  • Doesn't mean you have to feed into it.
  • For the people who don't read USA Today he did. Oh well, it was going to come out sooner or later.
  • Damn you Peter! You just don't understand!!

**storms off in a fit of unbridled, misguided fanboy rage**
  • Wait, is this really a spoiler? The comic is titled "Batman: RIP"... Wouldn't the spoiler be to tell you that Bruce Wayne actually dies at the end...?

    Oh shit..
  • Mag
Why does the the mask have eyelids?
  • IronMatt
"I’m predicting that DC Comics new caped crusader will be more along the lines of Christopher Nolan’s version of the Dark Knight."

Why? Nolan's Batman is the comic's Batman's bitch. There is no need to tone down the character.
  • I'm glad that they are finally taking the time to re-tool the entire storyline. As a fan of the comic, I realized that this had to be done during the beginning of the No Man's Land story arc. This is going to be a good wrap up to the 60 plus years of the Dark Knights history right in time for a new generation of readers to re-learn his history perhaps in a new presentation by upcoming artists.
This is all part of the new DC image that has been given the green light ever since Marvel Comics and it's franchises started gaining momentum in both on screen and off-screen formats. DC hasn't fared very well against all of the Marvel films besides Batman Begins and the Dark Knight; Superman Returns was a horrible film and I hope they take a cue from Director Christopher Nolan and revive this and other characters from the ground up in a realistic setting, yet with enough comicbook flair to keep hardcore fans in their seats.

In other words; this is a great direction that will bring more movies based on comic book characters such as The Dark Knight and Watchmen that are not afraid of steering clear from the camp, homages, or any other "Holy Metal Batman" moments.
  • Seeing the cover is not the problem, man :(
  • Actually is was only speculated that he was going to die. Case in point.
  • plus anyone following comics already knows...
  • El WREZ
superman returns was a good story "sergemeister" sorry it couldn't be like 300 and gay to your liking. YDF. looks like you better stick to your marvel comics.
  • Hickok
    SPOILER ALERT

Dick will be the new Batman
  • Marvin Salguero
I agree. Peter its pretty well known that another person will become the new Batman in the comics. I don't think its a re-tooling of sorts, unless after he returns they do that.
  • Dave
Please put a spoiler alert next time. I've been reading this arc and you just ruined it for me
  • Ruiner
Thanks for ruining it mother fucker.
  • Peter....

    Spoiler
A spoiler is a summary or description of a narrative (or part of a narrative) that relates plot elements not revealed early in the narrative itself. Moreover, because enjoyment of a narrative sometimes depends upon the dramatic tension and suspense which undergird it, this early revelation of plot elements can "spoil" the enjoyment that some consumers of the narrative would otherwise have experienced.

*clears throat* Some of us intentional avoid sites like that. They have no respect for the medium. If I recall correctly they also spoiled Spideys unmasking in Civil War and Caps death shortly thereafter.
