The audacious reboot of the James Bond franchise paid off big with 2006’s Casino Royale, and now Quantum of Solace (Sony) has hit the box office jackpot. Whereas Daniel Craig’s 007 debut opened with $40.8M, the new Bond, which picks up where Royale left off, has opened almost $30M higher with $70.4M in the US. That is a 72% increase. In fact, Quantum of Solace has opened about 50% better than the previous biggest Bond opening, Pierce Brosnan in Die Another Day in 2002, which started with $47.1M.

Sources are telling me that weekend audiences in the US for Quantum were 54% male and 46% female, and the franchise skewed a bit old with 58% of ticket-buyers over 25. The word-of-mouth will be very good for this excellent film, and for my money, the Casino Royale/Quantum of Solace films are the 2 best Bond films ever. As I wrote on Thursday, these 2 movies are to the Bond franchise, what Batman Begins and The Dark Knight are to the Batman franchise.

Quantum of Solace began opening in overseas territories on October 31, and now, including its meteoric domestic opening, the film banked $322M in 73 territories, and the film has yet to open in lucrative territories like Japan, Australia and Spain. In my estimation, the newest Bond will easily be the biggest 007 ever, becoming the first movie the the franchise to top $200M domestic. $700M worldwide would seem to be a reasonable target.

Meanwhile Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa (Dreamworks/Paramount) received a hippo-sized boost from its $8.1M Friday, more than doubling its haul for a $16.9M Saturday. After adding a projected $11.1M Sunday, Mad 2 will have a new 10-day cume of $118M, ranking as the all-time 4th-best 10-day total for a non-Summer animated film opening on a non-holiday. Amazingly, Madagascar 2 has a better domestic total after 10 days than this Summer’s Dreamworks Animation smash Kung Fu Panda, which checked in with $117.2M at the same point in its release cycle. There is no question now that Mad 2 will finish as the all-time biggest grossing non-Shrek movie in the history of Dreamorks Animation, and $220M-$225M domestic is possible.

Well it was the most expensive bond movie ever and America is retarded.
    Of course it opened well.

Really, the best two for your money? I agree that Casino Royale is the best Bond movie and I love Craig as Bond, but this just felt really flat to me. The action felt very cluttered, and the story didn't do anything for me. Also, the word of mouth I have heard and everyone i have talked to so far has all been "meh", so I don't agree with this "fantastic" film getting great word of mouth.

Wow, september 11th, would of been funny if your name wasn't what it is.
  • Chimaera
Are those the doubles in that pic? I'm not surprised it did well but it is no Dark Knight if we insist on comparing the two.

Well, thankfully i didn't read all this "word of mouth" and went into the movie expecting to enjoy it. And while it wasn't quite as good as CR, i enjoyed it very much. I have since read where people found the story "cluttered", when i found it pretty straightforward. At the same time, others thought there wasn't much of a story. So, which is it? Answer, its whatever you are predisposed to want. This story was more action based, but it didn't seem to over the top like Die another day. No CGI iceflows, no deathstar, just good old fashioned violence and some intrigue.

Can't help but wonder what the next color villian will be, so far we have white and Greene. The scene at the opera house was very well done. And lets face it, six fingered or not, Miss. Aterton is a hottie and a half.

Gone are the goofy gadgets that always detracted from the story. The best gadget ever i thought was the briefcase from the second Connery, From Russia, With Love. To those that say its a ripoff of Bourne, i say go back and read your original Fleming stories. Those out bourned bourne from the very start.

I hope to see it again in the theatre and will most definately be buying it on DVD.

I don't know that anything this year will take on TDK. Movies that huge dont come along very often. It was a better film in most respects, until that horribly written ending "He runs, because we need him too...okay, who ordered the Ham sandwich"!

I loved TDK, but it wasn't as much as everyone says, and it wasn't as bad as some like to portray, just like Quantum.
  • Captain Awesome
So this could take on TDK is what you're sayin'?

    :O
  • I'm not surprised in the least that this movie did so well this weekend. The question is if it will hold up next weekend. Well, lets just see...

    1. Both Bolt (family film) and Twilight (chick flick) come out next weekend. Families and women always come first...

    2. With the economy the way it is, people most likely will not see all three. Will a Bond movie that everyone is saying isn't fantastic, beat out a family film reviews are saying is cute or a chick flick that has a HUGE female base?

    3. This film isn't in IMAX!

With all this in mind, will it REALLY do this well for weeks to come? I don't think so...
  • AJ
Movies do better during economic crises. They're not as expensive as everything else and they're an escape.

It was a good movie, but it was a Bourne movie, not a Bond movie. The action shots and Bonds mentality reminded me much more of Jason Bourne than James Bond... he wasn't suave or funny, just completely methodical and cold-blooded in his quest for revenge. In pure movie terms it was a good action movie, but in Bond terms it didn't quite fit.
  • rickshaw1
He wasn't supposed to be suave or funny. It was literally an hour after CR, when he is at the beginning of his career as Bond. It fit the storyline and followed the new style. Only the wrapping has changed. We still had big bases (Hotel in the middle of nowhere), we still had maniacal villians, we still had cool cars, exciting action sequences. You were disappointed because he didn't say "bond, james bond" and order a martini that was shaken?

The point to the restart is to give us his beginnings, from a rough soldier to the smooth lifetaker and heartbreaker he becomes.

Not as good as CR, but I enjoyed it very much. AS for it being a Bourne movie, go back and read Flemings books. The real Bond (if you can call a fictional character that) was anything but the hokey movie character we have had for decades now.
