Avatar Teaser Trailer Coming Soon?

Could the first teaser trailer for James Cameron’s Sci-Fi 3D epic Avatar be on its way? MarketSaw posted these very convincing photos of a batch of packaged 35mm film trailers. Fox’s The Day The Earth Stood Still hits theaters on December 12th, could the teaser be attached to that film? I can’t imagine that Cameron would want to release an Avatar trailer not in 3D, would he? Some have pointed out that the lengthy running time listed on the boxes might point to it being a fake.

Auggh, it look REALLY real, but I don't think there gonna be putting it out like that,
  • Joe
Honestly? I believe it. Remember what Disney did with Bolt in front of Beverly Hills Chihuahua? That was 5+ minutes and showcased multiple full scenes in the film. This isn't that much of a stretch in my eyes.
  • Jerry Butler's Back
Anyone with like a printer and some plastic cases could make that pic in like two minutes. FAKE
  • GregoryV
I'm ready for the uncanny valley.
  • Bolt is showing in 3D, isn't it?

The 3D Avatar trailer may be attached to that and a week later, the regular Avatar trailer may be with Australia or something.
  • Steve
4 minutes for a TEASER? ehhh
  • Matt Granados
If it wasn't for the running time, I'd buy it. FAKE.
  • Mcgruff
if youre making a fake picture, dont you want people to think its real? So why make such a crazy run-time if you want people to believe the pic is true. maybe true after all?
  • Mario
Maybe it's a compilation of many teasers and the total runtime reflects that?
  • Max
Maybe the teaser wont be in 3-d to get peoples attention so that they will be even more excited when the trailer is in 3-d

That looks like a 2:57 to me. I'd say it's real. Every studio gets one exception to the 2:30 trailer running time limit each year and Avatar is Fox's biggest movie next year.

What're the chances it's some sort of short featurette about the film?
  • Chromey
Cameron doesn't play by the rules so who's to say it won't be 3:57 of IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE.
  • theGinna
I would say its a fake. Aren't most teasers/trailers for big releases - and this is pretty major, shipped to theaters under 'fake' titles?

Just as a disclaimer, I've got no idea what trailer reels look like, but would they really be packaged with in such a way? With "A James Cameron Film" above the title? It seems to me like the only people who see the reels would be projectionists, so why bother advertising to them? Wouldn't they just have a small, simple sticker on them?

If anyone is a projectionist, feel free to shoot me down.
  • Andy
I'm not a projectionist, but I am friends with a dude who worked for a time as one (we'd get advance screenings of movies a day or two before release, as they had to run the film to check for any major scratches, defects, etc).

Anyways, most of the films themselves shipped under fake names... the big ones, at least, and most of the big release trailers did as well. I don't know what that means for this, but it seems like a project as big and mysterious as Avatar would at least take that level of precaution, and definitely wouldn't go the extra step to put "a james Cameron film" on the label (which I've NEVER seen before).

Still a huge part of me just want to cross my fingers and giggle like an excited schoolgirl. In regards to the running time- remember in 1999, that amazing, 4-minute trailer for Disney's "Dinosaur"? Each studio is given permission for one over-2 1/2-minute trailer per year. Don't ask me where I read that, I don't remember, but I've heard it a few times. If Fox was gonna splurge their biggest timeslot on ANY movie... this seems like it'd be the one.

Two and a half minutes is the maximum length allowed by theaters. Each studio or distributor is allowed to exceed this time limit once a year, if they feel it is necessary for a particular film.
  • Captain Awesome
I want to be exicted for this so badly. But that looks so incredibly fake.

Blue Balls of epic proportions >:(

The Dinosaur trailer was basically just the killer opening "the egg travels" scene from the movie. Best part of the film. Then the money's started talking , and it all went downhill...

  • I really hope Avatar is a good movie, and that it's not just over-hyped, especially because of the 3-D.
  • Nick
I'm with you. It looks like a 2 to me and this would definitely be the time to use your +2:30. Hell, one year they used it on The Devil Wears Prada.
  • The "money's" started talking too, in the sense that executives were scared that an entire film without dialog would scare away an audience, so the decision was made for the animals to talk. Almost exactly the same thing happened on "The Land Before Time".
  • I really want this to be real! I just want to see something from the movie. so I can decide whether or not the whole 'uncanny valley' talk of Cameron's is legit or not. Thats all I wanna see. I'll settle for 7 seconds of footage really! If we get to see a teaser before the end of the year, I'll be happy.
  • I have been told this will be a short intro / explanation of new technology from James Cameron, some on the set footage, and then a 60 second teaser. Kindof like the old Hitchcock trailers I guess?
  • A technology teaser? I dislike those. I can research the technology if I really want. I watch a trailer to see pieces of the movie to judge if it will be good!
  • I expect a 10% jump in DtESS sales after this info is released.
  • AICN seems to have picked up the story, so I'm sure we'll hear a confirmation or denial soon enough

As a former projectionist, it wouldn't surprise me that the movie came titled "Avatar" (only a VERY few movies or trailers came under fake names, including the Star Wars prequels). However, the plastic casing is a bit odd . . . I don't recall EVER seeing a trailer coming in a plastic shell (although admittedly, I left theatres about 4 years ago and things may have changed).

That being said, it sure looks like 3:57 to me, and the size of the reels doesn't seem to match up to a 4 minute running time. I'm calling fake.
  • Despite my skepticism, I genuinely hope it is real, there's been so much talk and hype surrounding this movie (a lot of it created by Cameron himself) that it'll almost be a relief to finally see something!
  • Chad
Where can I see the 4-minute trailer of "Dinosaur"? I'm intrigued! As for the photo, I hope it is real, simply out of how excited I am to get a little taste of what this movie has to offer.
  • I used to be a projectionist, and I have some trailers sitting next to me right now (Rocky Balboa, Rambo (John Rambo's the printed title), The X-Files, and a few more. and usually they don't print the film logo on the sticker. usually, it's just the studio logo.

and I know that's a font, but it looks to be a film logo. that's just my two cents thrown in.
  • Jbiza
As a former projectionist, it could go either way. M:I:3 was packaged almost identical to this, just with the proper logos, and I believe it was Paramount that made it, but this isn't abnormal, and could easily be real.
