Judd Apatow’s Funny People Teaser Poster

Universal Pictures has released the first teaser poster for Judd Apatow’s upcoming dramedy Funny People (read all the juicy details about the film’s plot here). The film is still shooting, and yes, it is unusual for a teaser poster to be released this early during production.

The reason is that Apatow and Universal are holding a contest for one person to win a walk-on role in the film. Full press release and information below.

Woah, Judd Apatow's wife is in almost all movies, though that aint really a bad thing.. she can act pretty well.
  • Bob Bablaw
Well, I want to see this movie. Poster seems cozy. I bet this'll be one of those heartwarming comedy for the whole family affairs.
  • Kee
Seth Rogen looks like Seth Rogen Undeclared-era.
  • lpfanaddy
Man, Seth Rogen really is looking slim for the Green Hornet. I had to take a double-take to figure out it was him.
  • MichaelBay
Apatow needs to stop casting his wife in all his movies.

apatow's wife ruined that one episode of freaks and geeks she was in. for that i'll never forgive either of them.

...that said, i'm glad they're moving away from the "lead guy's face over colored background" and at least have three people over a colored background, now.
  • Roberto
The only reason I'd be slightly interested in seeing this is because of Eric Bana. I know he has a background in standup and he's a great actor. Otherwise this is a great big PASS for me. SO over the Apatow machine.

That is one of the most epic fail posters I've ever seen.
  • Jud
What a dumb poster...my ex girlfriend is working on this, she said the script is boring. This one sheet looks like Sandler and Leslie Mann had a kid and named him Seth Rogen.
  • lpfanaddy
How could anyone not be excited for this movie given what Apatow has done to influence adult-themed comedies? And honestly, when does a poster ever equate a movie being good/bad? Some pretty crappy movies have had good posters (Spiderman 3, anyone?)
  • frank
there is nothing "funny" about this poster
  • lpfanaddy
and Leslie Mann has been good in both Knocked Up and 40 Year Old Virgin so why can't she be in this?
  • Alex
"Winners will be judged on quality of expression, originality, and enthusiasm."

is that winner with an S ?
  • Roberto
Judd's got, "everything I touch turns to comic gold, so why try hard"-syndrome. Thinks he can just write a skeleton script and then rely on improv to fill in the gaps. The improv bits end up sticking out like sore, unfunny thumbs. You can tell he's gotten lazy. The ratio of written to unwritten material has increased as quality has diminished. Shoot even Freaks and Geeks was pretty inconsistent. Now that his universe has collided with Sandlers, get ready for some mind-numbing mediocrity. Booyah!
  • Matt
The way the vertical poster is cropped makes it look like adam sandler is just grabbing his junk.
  • PlantPage55
Oh boy! Where's the ridiculous claim linking the design of this poster to the other Apatow posters?

    "It's a picture of the actors!!!!....on the poster!!!...it's Apatow's signature!"
  • john
remember when Adam Sandler USED to be funny?

Seth Rogan is way funnier than him.
  • Well I have to say, the tag-line above the title saying, "the THIRD film from blah blah," was an extremely smart description by the studio heads. So many people who are not as in depth about movies as we are, and I mean that in the nicest way possible, get confused by every movie that Judd Apatow produces when the trailers and posters say from the creator(s)) of blah blah are said. By saying the third film i.e. Quentin Tarantino style, the are actually educating people seeing the poster for the first time who didn't know that Judd wrote and directed The 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up. It's basically reminding you that, oh yeah, 40 and Knocked WERE better than Drillbit Taylor and You Don't Mess With the Zohan. By saying the third film, there trying to keep Judd's good reputation, and I think they will succeed.

The posters for 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up were not anything special. Why should this? The posters for those and this pretty much are the same thing, only difference being this one has three people instead of one. Besides the movie isn't supposed to be consisted completely of funny moments so I think it's a legitimate fit poster: definitely looking like a comedy movie, but not entirely so. Plus it's helped by the fact that they said "the writer/director" and not "the guy".
  • jamie
this poster is not as apatow-eque as i had hoped it would be :(
  • Ganaesh D.
Adam Sandler seems so... normal, in this poster. And that's actually quite refreshing to see. No Photoshop overkill, just a good layout design, with good typography and three people who are quite easy on the eyes. Nice.
  • Brian
Although I barely find any of Sandler's comedy "funny" I do respect him and I do enjoy a lot of his stuff. As I looked at the poster I said YEA! Adam Sandler and Leslie Mann teaming up again! Then I remember that Seth Rogen is in it... Oh well, just another movie I won't see -_-
